Will Kings be spoilers in the coming playoffs?
Everyone, i.e., the media, sports analysts, the King's opponents, are all saying the Kings don't have a chance of winning it all this season. They're all saying, because of the roster changes and injuries to Brad and Bobby, the Kings will need next season to get it's act together. I, for one, think differently. In the last few games, with a number of games playing together already under their belt, the current Kings are getting used to each other. Kenny Thomas' offence is blooming as he blossoms under the Kings' team-concept. Skinner and Williamson are showing the way to better defense. Peja is blossoming, Mike Bibby is getting a rest and very willing to let the other shine. Adelman has finally opened up to letting the bench get some minutes when the starters are down, with the resulting new "semi-bench mob" of House, Songaila, Mo Evans, and Mobley/Peja beating opponents with intensity, high-percentage shots, and execution, setting up the starters to finish the job.
Caveats
With all this on our side, what can go wrong? Well, will the current team be able to handle Yao Ming/McGrady, Novitsky/Finley, Shaq/Wade, Nash/Amare? Not by themselves, certainly, but if they play together, I think they can.
What about Brad and Bobby coming back in and gumming up the works? Here, I'm pretty sure nothing like that will happen because those guys don't hog the ball or expect the ball like Webber did, thus nullifying the King's much-vaunted team-offense.
So, will the underdog Kings make it all the way this season? Just two words: I believe.
