Sure it's still the regular season and the playoffs are still to come and who knows what will happen. But the Kings are still a couple moves away from contention, and I'm looking forward to the NBA Draft about as much as I'm looking forward to the playoffs. Here's a pie in the sky plan to make the Kings contenders in one offseason.
Trade #1
Chicago Trade Breakdown
Outgoing
Tyson Chandler
Incoming
Francisco Garcia, Jamaal Magloire
Sacramento Trade Breakdown
Outgoing
Kenny Thomas, Francisco Garcia, 2006 1st Round Pick
Incoming
Tyson Chandler
Milwaukee Trade Breakdown
Outgoing
Jamaal Magloire
Incoming
Kenny Thomas, 1st Round Pick
Why for the Bulls: they get a more consistent center (whose deal just happens is expiring in 2007) and a promising shooting guard
Why for the Bucks: they get an athletic power forward (they have all centers) and a pick
Why for the Kings: interior presence, rebounding
Trade #2
Seattle Trade Breakdown
Outgoing
Ray Allen, Earl Watson
Incoming
Mike Bibby, Corliss Williamson, Kevin Martin
Sacramento Trade Breakdown
Outgoing
Mike Bibby, Corliss Williamson, Kevin Martin
Incoming
Ray Allen, Earl Watson
Why Seattle makes the deal: they get out from Ray Allen's deal and get a good point guard in Bibby, a young promising 2 guard and Corliss' expiring deal. There are rumors of a fire sale in Seattle, and I doubt they'd get a better deal than this.
Why Sacramento makes the deal: I'm sure this trade will get howls of derision. Bibby AND Martin for Allen and Watson? I just think that if the Kings are going to use Bibby primarily as a shooter, might as well get someone who is a better shooter (Ray Allen). Watson fits the new defensive mindset, he's a great distributor, and he's added a shot. Martin may eventually turn into a star or he may not. But Allen would help the Kings win immediately.
Free Agent Signing #1:
Bonzi
Free Agent Signing #2:
Go after Mike James with the MLE. If that doesn't work, go after Marcus Banks (probably more realistic)
Free Agent Signing #3
Mario Kasun for the LLE
Your 2006/2007 Kings:
PG: Earl Watson/Marcus Banks/Ronnie Price
SG: Ray Allen/Bonzi Wells
SF: Ron Artest/Bonzi Wells/Sergei Monia
PF: Tyson Chandler/Shareef Abdur-Rahim
C: Brad Miller/Shareef Abdur-Rahim/Mario Kasun
With Watson, Artest and Chandler anchoring the defense this group would be extremely tough. And offensively it would be a more well-rounded unit. You have a solid distributor in Watson, the best shooter in basketball in Allen, Artest would have room to operate out of the post, and Miller hits the jump shots. A Banks/Wells/Abdur-Rahim bench would be on of the best the Kings have ever had.
I think this would be a serious team. You have three defensive specialists, rebounding, shotblocking, outside shooting, post play and punch off the bench.
