NY Post: Artest Homeward Bound?

This is the Post of course, and I classify this more as rampant speculation than anything hard, but nonetheless...:

DEAL MAY OPEN DOOR FOR ISIAH TO MAKE A RUN AT ARTEST
By MARC BERMAN
July 3, 2007

Armed with two new trade pawns in the expiring contracts of Dan Dickau and Fred Jones, the advent of free agency and a new edict that character no longer matters, Isiah Thomas wants to swing another deal or two this month.

While free-agent Rashard Lewis is their pipe dream, on-the-block Ron Artest is more attainable. Thomas had stayed clear of his former player because of his list of violent transgressions that soured owner James Dolan. With the acquisitions of troubled Zach Randolph, the character issue is dead.

Artest, whose fallen out of favor in Sacramento, makes sense. Small forward is the hole in the lineup, and Artest would make the Knicks a solid perimeter defensive team that would cover up their shot-blocking woes. Jared Jeffries was such a disappointment that Quentin Richardson is slated to start there next season.

Thomas has 17 players on the roster - two above the max, so another trade is coming - even if it's lateral. The new players can't be dealt for 30 days, so Jared Jeffries, Nate Robinson and Randolph Morris are being shopped.

While he promised he wouldn't use his $5 million mid-level exception this summer, indications are he could back off that stance following the Randolph trade. He would prefer to add a free agent via a 3-for-1 sign-and-trade.

"I've been active and we'll continue to be active," said Thomas, who broke a 16-month trade drought with the Randolph deal. "If there's someone we identify fitting the team we're building, we'll go after them like we went after others. I don't consider this a finished product by any stretch."

Thomas confirmed he spoke to free-agent Rashard Lewis when free agency opened Sunday. Lewis could make a recruiting visit, but the Knicks' chances of doing a sign-and-trade with the Sonics are small. They'll be competing with a number of teams, including under-the-cap Orlando. Lewis made a recruiting visit to Orlando yesterday.

"He's a person of interest," Thomas said. "Anytime you can get a good player, you get him."

*
Thomas went out of his way to make cap throw-ins Dickau and Jones feel as if they will stick with the team, perhaps trying to pump their trade value. Thomas presented them with white Knicks jerseys and Isiah told anecdotes about the two players. Dickau and Jones were stung by the deal as they had local connections - Jones is a Portland native and Dickau played at Gonzaga. When Randolph posed with Rangers signees Chris Drury and Scott Gomez, it should be noted Dickau and Jones were asked to leave the frame. Asked if this trade made them a playoff team, Thomas said, "I think it should." . . . Randolph said he will be in Las Vegas to participate in the Knicks' voluntary big-man camp beginning July 9.

I don't see much that NY have to offer, Lee they're not giving up, so the only other player is Balkman, and possibly Nate althoughSac fans probably don't want him. Picks would have to be included also.

yep, it would have to be David Lee plus something else good, which they dont have. Honestly if we arent going to get crap for Artest i'd rather keep the guy.

do they have any other expirings? :) i'd love to have a non lotto protected pick like they gave away in the curry deal ;)

Other than Lee, Mardy Collins is the only other player I have an interest in really. Had an eye opening ending to the season. No enders until training camp time. Know Geoff used to like Crawford, although he's a mess. Before the draft they could have sweetened this with a pick or Frye, but now? Not sure Zeke can even give away his #1 next year because he gave away his #1 this year to the Bulls.

man that blows.. can't they pick a player next draft and give it to us? :P

actually they swapped picks, so there might be an exception there

They acquired $6 million in in expiring contracts in the Randolph trade, Fred Jones and Dan Dickau. I don't believe they could be traded together for 90 days, so it wouldn't be able to be official until October, but something like Jones/Dickau/Lee or Jones/Dickau/pick

Dealing with the Knicks just got much more appealing.

Lee would be huge. young, and would instantly help on the boards next to Hawes. That said, he's easily Ny's most popular player, so I'm not sure it could get done. I'd do Jones/Dickau/Lee for Artest any day of the week.

My whole issue with giving up Artest/Biby would be they had to take SAR, or KT as well.. I think that is why something hasn't been done yet. The other teams are not wanting to take on KT/SAR.. Although SAR is as close to a "buyout" as any other player in the league w/ his knee problems..

I'd be down with Balkman if there's no way to get Lee.

Kid hussles AND plays good defense.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for David Lee.
I doubt very serious that Isaiah would be THAT stupid...Lee is the only smart thing the Knicks have done, as far as drafting, in years. if anything, I could see them offering Crawford for Artest...not sure how savvy I'd be to that, but its better than alot of offers that are being thrown in the air.

Never underestimate the stupidity of Isiah Thomas. I'd be surprised if Isiah DOESN'T trade Lee, assuming the trade is proposed as posted here.

A trade of Artest for Dickau (expiring), Balkman (young), Nate (young) and Collins (young) would work, although I'm not sure how each side would feel. It wouldn't be able to go down til 28th of August because of Dickau having just been traded.

Grant and Mike are interviewing Mark Berman from the NY Post and Grant asked him on a scale of 1-10, do you think this trade would get done and Mark said from a scale of 1-10, it would be an 8. Mark thinks David Lee is part of the package. Take this for what its worth.

Anything else said about who would be in the deal? I would love to have Lee, but I can't imagine it happening.

There's a good reason Rockmeister said, "Take this for what it's worth."

Geoff Petrie doesn't conduct his business in the media. Mark Berman is a writer; he's making quasi-educated guesses about the same way Scott Howard-Cooper or Sam Amick might if they were on a talk show in New York. I wouldn't try and read very much into it at this point. Basically, his speculation is no different than what people around here have been tossing around all day.

why does everyone think david lee is untradeable, the guy could rebound score decent points in decent minutes, but he is no ron artest, not even in the same talent of catergories the knicks would give anyone on that roster for artest, except maybe maurbary and randolph, come on guys why do we always over rate guy's.

Lee is very possible. With Randolph there, Lee will get squeezed for minutes. They can try him at SF, but he doesn't have the skills to play there, and defenses will collapse off him to double the post. Hopefully we won't have to take on any long contracts.

Actually Berman said that the Knicks "interest" in Artest was an 8. Also, he didn't seem to think that the Knicks would part with Lee because he's young and up n coming (also would be unpopular with the fans). Grant and Mike said it would be great to get Lee, and Berman said it would be for Kings fans, but he never gave the impression that Lee would be part of a trade package. Berman was talking about different guys and then Grant came in and said that Petrie wouldn't just give Artest away for nothing. The conversation was all conjecture and opinions.

yeah, lee would be a great addition to our team, but i was kinda confuse with us giving him up for garbage, but thanks for clarifying the situation.

Actually, I don't think we could get a #1 for awhile from them. They still owe Utah (via Phoenix) a 1st round pick as part of Stephan Marbury trade. It's a protected pick though, although the amount of protection deteriorates over time.

This is from RealGMs future draft picks tracker:

2007 first round draft pick to Utah
New York.s own 2007 1st round pick to Utah via Phoenix (top 24 protected in the 2007 Draft, top 23 protected in the 2008 Draft, top 22 protected in 2009 and unprotected in the 2010 Draft).

If you can get Kenny in the deal and get back short contracts, then a little "garbage" never killed anyone. That is if you can get Kenny in the deal.
