Northern California Trivia Thread

I won't use "google" for them but when you include things like "Presley Dorris" in the clue it's not google--proof.

I was more voicing frustration at how quickly D-Mass was answering more than anything else. Carry on... I'll quit whining now.

:)
Yeah, the Alturas one was an earlier one... I am sharpening my clue writing skills.

I was trying to answer these questions based solely on my own knowledge. I guess if we're going to keep score I should have been using "google"...

The first few I got today were from my own knowledge, but the last few I researched. NoBonus is right...Google has helped, but you still have to sift through a lot of info to find the right place. It's actually been fun to research these things...I've learned a lot along the way.

It should be mentioned, however, that I am a teacher who is a stay-at-home dad during the summer. My son usually naps from 1-3pm, so I've got some time on my hands during that time. I'm not sure my score should count...:p

I'll bail for awhile...but if one comes up about my hometown, I'm totally answering it!

I think the scoring on this is more for fun and not really meaning of anything; I just started doing it for my own benefit. If you want a score that counts, go on atlasquest...

Question #22

This town got it's current name in 1854 when a temperence league and some church groups demanded a "more friendly" name for the town. However, the old name for this town still lives on as this town's nickname.

No need to bail... I would, however, find it really interesting if you explained how you found the answers... just from a clue writer's perspective.

Honestly, just using Google...but I'm pretty good with search terms. The more you reword the questions using your own vocabulary, the better. Of course, anything that involves names, dates, detailed descriptions, etc. is pretty easy to find. For the Tehama clue, I just searched "smallest incorporated city", California, and 1850. Once I got a few choices, I Google mapped them to find ones that had numbered streets and were on a river.

Aha! So basically you're my fourth grade California history teacher come back to haunt me after all these years!!! And haunt is the right word, since the poor man has probably been dead for decades.

;)

Question #18

This place was this county's second largest employer when it burned down... thankfully, it reopened in July of 2008. They make a excellent Muffaletta sandwich and is a must stop when driving by. In what city does this wonderful place reside?

I think I have the record for Salami sandwiches eaten here over the last 25 years. Try the Turkey Bird it's fantastic. :D

Now that I think back on it - it was a very long time ago, you understand - I remember that I only had one teacher for the 4th grade. We didn't get multiple teachers for different subjects until 7th grade. Ah, the memories... blurry and failing, but still there (kind of).

Question #23

This sleepy town in Northern California was originally called by one name until, as legend has it, a WWI troop train stopped in this town for water and the troops, so offended by the name started a riot... so the town changed it's name. What are the new and old names of this sleepy town?

Ooh-ooh, was it Intercourse? No wait, that's in Pennsylvania. ;)

I've only known a couple from my own knowledge, but I find it fun to see is I can research the answer on line. I get hints and I'm always to curious to just wait for the answer. ;)

A long time ago I used to play history games online at Discovery.com, which I loved. You'd get a clue a day, that went from very hard to easier. They stopped running the ones I was playing. I few online friends still make up history or similar games for our online group.

I learned a lot of historical things I didn't really know about or at least not much about.

Question #24

This ghost town was established way back in 1848 (what year was the Gold Rush again?) by a famous father of a different nearby city. They built a neat device to cross the river, but by the time it was completed in 1856, the residents were vacating the area already. By the 1880's, less than 40 residents remained.

There are currently 0 residents of this ghost town which is amazing considering it's location right near the river... of course, it is one of the single most difficult ghost towns to visit even in the middle of summer.
What town is it?
