NFL 2023-2024 Thread

I've seen little to indicate the defense will improve much from these playoffs. - its the opposite. its gonna be on Purdy and the offense. You can go back to the 2022 regular season replay Chiefs game and the 49ers got whooped for 43 pts. This year's defensive personnel are not much different that got abused by the Chiefs offense then, and Mahomes didn't even have to run in that game. If the 49ers defensive line manage to get pressure on Mahomes he'll just start running the ball for gashes as he always does. As noted also, if the run support from the seconadary doesn't get better, the Chiefs may score in the 40s again. The 20 pt observation I think will be blown up, I think 49ers will need to score in the mid-or high 30s. They're capable of it. Mid 20s won't cut it. Low 30s it'll come down to kicking game and be iffy. Plus Shanahan is horrible with time management and timeouts - another small grenade.

Having seen how bad our run defense has been at times this year, its not hard to imagine pacheco and mahomes racking up record breaking rushing yards in the super bowl. If the 49ers come out of the gates like they did against the packers and lions, it'll be lights out pretty early. Can't get down 10-14 points to mahomes and company and expect to come back.

Thats right......all the supposedly 'smaller' problems add up to a debacle vs the top teams. Run defense, Secondary, Coaching, Pass Protection, and kicking. They're gonna really need to lay into the run for McCaffrey - they've gotta aim for a 100+ yard game from him to take pressure off the pass rush. Make the Chiefs pay for blitzing.

There's not nearly enough being talked about how bad the 49ers' defense has been. We shouldn't need Brock to lead comeback victories. This defense has been riding on its reputation since the Saleh and Demeco days. I think the defense got really fortunate that the Lions were overzealous on 4th down and we were the benefactors of some bad WR drops.

If this is the same defense we saw against Greenbay or Detroit, there's no way we're winning the Superbowl.

So much being put on Purdy, yet none of it really matters if the defense doesn't show up. I don't think we can win a shoot-out against Mahomes as much as I love Purdy.

People who think Brock is good: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, and pretty much every single quarterback who’s ever played the game at a high level

People who don’t: Cam Newton, dudes on the internet with screen names like B00bAppreciator420.
Hey now. All of my Tweets (X's?) about Purdy have been very positive.

Sincerely,

Mostly agree, but the 49ers offense I think is good enough to win it alone (if and big if) with their top offensive game, and will probably have to have close to it. Anything under a B+/A- on offense and the 49ers are probably losing. Mahomes wins with his scampers when under pressure.....the 49ers ought to spy bringing up one of their faster secondary for cover 1 on probable pass plays - Mahomes is faster than all the D-line and comparable to Greenlaw and Warner......you need someone extra fast up to help close down and limit Mahomes damage on leak outs. Who knows if that even happens.....kinda doubt it - Wilks and defense admitted to completely getting whooped for 1 half vs Lions, but what are they gonna do to correct?

Dont wanna have a game similar to the Bengals beating earlier in the season with Burrows running for 5 or 6 fist downs which could very well be similar with Chiefs.

Even by my own exceedingly low standards, I’m shockingly pessimistic about tomorrow. To the point where I’m just content with it. I’ll be thrilled if they win. I’m excited enough for the game itself. But I just don’t see them beating KC ever.

By shockingly, you think there's no chance the 49ers win? That isn't shocking from you.
I'm pessimistic, but not as much as the 2020 Superbowl where I was pretty sure they weren't winning.. This time I Give the 49ers a litle under even chances to win. I don't expect their defense to play well, but for the offense my expectation is a blank, enshrouded in mystery. Their recent SuperBowl with Garrapolo, I knew the Chiefs were gonna blitz them on offense at some point in the game, and I had little faith in the 49ers offense to respond. This game I have considerably more faith in the 49ers offense especially given the nature of their 2 playoff wins, but overall pessimistic with the defense and kicking game. The game could be similar to when the Bills/Chiefs play the last few years, it comes down to who has the last possession. The takeaway for me is this combined 49er team has more going for it (potential) than the 2020 team still. Don't know if its enough.

One thing, the game would have to be completely sideways to be worse than last year's Eagles debacle - there's that -- Kind of like your 'content' statement.

A bit more nuanced prognosis from one of the sports columnists whom I like (he also correctly predicted the Bucs/Chiefs outcome) . Here's an excerpt:

"............
The focus of course will be on the quarterbacks — K.C.’s Patrick Mahomes and San Francisco’s Brock Purdy — but I see SB58 decided not by the jet jockeys, but the foot soldiers.

The rule, like everything else, is neither hard nor fast, but odds are the team dominating on the ground will win the game. Which means running backs and offensive line. Once January comes around, so do they.

The Niners have the best and most versatile tailback in The League in Christian McCaffrey. The Chiefs have Isiah Pacheco, the hardest to bring down. Runs as though he’s on fire.

I hope I’m wrong, because I can’t stand the Chiefs and how they have welcomed players with incredibly suspect backgrounds, but I like K.C. to win this game, with Pacheco as the MVP — although, if you go by Super Bowl scripture, Isiah can gain 300 yards and Mahomes will still win it.

K.C. can’t come close to matching San Francisco’s offensive skills, but I can’t stop thinking how the Lions’ ground game pulverized them into flour in the NFC championship game. Manhandled. David Montgomery averaged 6.2 yards per carry. ......."

You can reason deficiencies from different angles. I like the Pacheco metaphor.

Interesting how the Lions "pulverized. [the 49ers] into flour" but managed to score on only one drive in the second half. Meanwhile the Niners scored on every one of their drives in the second half except the one where they kneeled down to win the game.

Really not sure how the Chiefs are still allowed to use the tomahawk chop and the war chant in 2024 while we rightfully made Washington reboot their entire franchise and Cleveland’s baseball team became the Guardians.
