Now that the arena deal is off, it's pretty much a no-brainer that the Kings aren't going to stay. I'm not going to any games next year and I hope the arena is almost completely empty for all home games next year....I'm done with this team! I can't believe the owners did this to us...
The Maloofs did it squarely with middle finger to everyone - fans, city, NBA, etc. But it's really just more of the long history of Sacramento despair and life on edge of disaster. The Kings only got here from Kansas City by hook or crook when a small local developer nearly single handed purchased the team and built a barn for NBA basketball for couple years. Then he went virtually bankrupt building ARCO II on the cheap and not long after sold the franchise to an LA businessman. A few years later the Kings were begging for a huge financial bailout from Sac city council to survive - which they miraculously got.
But why so much never ending hardship, leading to todays total debacle? It's basically because Sac city (and county) has very little operating money, has never really had much to hang its hat on in the way of major private biz formation. As a sidebar, Sac losing two major Air Force bases, McClellan and Mather was devastating economically in early/mid-90s, to this day. Unlike San Antonio, Orlando, and several other small market NBA cities that have LOTS of funds spawned by pro-biz attitudes, tourism, Fortune 500 headquartered companies (San Antonio has all that plus several large military bases) - it all contributes to a huge tax base for economic development.
Bottom line: Until sleepy Sacramento unleashes private business and pro-development attitudes to create a long-term sustainable tax base it will be a sorry, pathetic cowtown. Thanks for your heroic efforts KJ in scrounging up $255M but the problems in Sactown are so deep and entrenched I don't think any one person can overcome the sad state of affairs.
