Contrary to reports, the Blazers are not demanding a first round choice as compensation from the Nets in a sign-and-trade transaction for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The player they want is Mile Ilic, a 7-1, 21-year-old Bosnian drafted No. 43 less than a month ago. New Jersey won't do it. Should Rahim prove unattainable and Donyell Marshall, 30, refuse to back off his insistence on receiving a full mid-level exception, it's believed the Nets find Sonics forward Darius Songalia more attractive than Stromile Swift.

Maybe the Kings should actually, you know, try to resign Darius. It would be a shame for us to bring this guy up, develop him, and just let him walk. He's still not a starter, but I think even this year he could become one. I will be very sad if we let him walk. For all the talk about not being too high on K9 and looking for the next PF, we seem to have forgotten about Darius. Well, at least speaking for myself, not really considering the impact he can have in the future. I say we do everything we can to hold on to him, even maybe the MLE. At this point, unless we get something much better to come along, I like keeping Darius. Maybe even sign him to the max (if the price is right). A 6 year deal ain't that bad if we aren't paying him 7+ a year, and getting him locked up cheap could be a major coup a few years down.

I don't want to spend the entire MLE on Darius...He's a sixth man, right now, and honestly, I really don't know how much better he can get.

If your gonna spend the MLE on a jumpshooting PF, give it to Marshall...

As long as Thomas is on the roster, it'd be redundant to resign him. Thomas has the edge in toughness and athleticism, both qualities we need. The full mid level would be way too much, not to mention a 6 year deal. And Darius could very easily get lost in a Thomas/Skinner/Williamson rotation.

Songaila has more of an upside being younger. I'd like us to get something else for Thomas, trade him somewhere to rid ourselves of that contract. And I can't see how a 6 year deal would be bad if we didn't overpay him- yeah, we're stuck with him, but barring a massive injury, it just means we don't have to shop for a backup PF for another 6 years (in the worst case scenario). Of course I don't want to pay him max dollars, but 6 years cheap ain't bad. And he'd also be very tradeable, should the need arise.

There's only about a 7 month age difference between Darius and Kenny. Once you get to their age there isn't much upside left. There won't be any significant leap if any at all; mainly refinement of skills and applying the knowledge you’ve attained throughout the years.

That said, Darius is what he is -- he is not going to get dramatically better, certainly not ever going to become taller, a better athlete, a beast in the post, a shotblocker etc. He showed some nuance in his ability to run the offense last year, but he's nothing you forego other opportunites for, and right now we cannot afford to have him on the roster alongside Brad, Peja, Kenny, Corliss and the rest of the I'm-invisible-down-inside litlle big men.

He'd be nice to keep, but I think his time with us has come to an end. He's just a role playing reserve, we should have no problem finding someone at least as good to take over his minutes.

But that's got nothing to do with the Viper. Milbon's an excellent writer capable of memorable prose. Viper belongs to a separate class of scummy shuckster rumor-mongerers ala Chad Ford that throw as much **** on the wall as they can and see what sticks. I take everything he says with a giant grain of salt a) because he gets paid to stir things up and doesn't care how he does it; and b) 95% of everything he says is going to happen does not happen, but humans have a tendency to only remember the single hit rather than the 19n misses that preceded it.

I have absolutely no idea what it says on Ilic's passport (and indeed in the wake of the 1990's would guess it says Serbia), but nonetheless can see how Vescey made the simple (if erroneous) deduction -- birthplace = Bosnia, so he is Bosnian (again although he may well have become a Serbian citizen).
