NBA Star Helps Hurricane Victims Rebound

Sep 13, 2005, 09:43 PM

(Garrett, IN WANE)- A hometown hero is helping a Louisiana family start over. Three weeks ago, Denise and Billy St. Amant, their two daughters, and Denise's sister Dawn all lived on the same street in St. Bernard's Parish. That was before Hurricane Katrina ravaged Louisiana. The family evacuated, but Billy stayed behind to watch the houses. After the storm hit, Billy wasn't able to talk to his family, until a television crew found him, 9 days later. Good friends of the family live in Garrett that's how the St. Amant's ended up in Indiana.
Garrett's not to far from N.B.A. star Brad Miller's hometown of Kendallville. It didn't take long for a friend of a friend to tell Brad's uncle Phil about the St. Amant's turmoil. Heitz informed his nephew and they rushed to help the family rebound. Heitz helped find the family a house to rent in Garrett. Miller will be paying the rent and utilities until the family is financially secure.

The family plans to live in Garrett permanently. They say the community is very caring and generous. The children are already enrolled in school, and the adults have job prospects lined up. Miller is also in the process of helping 3 other families who have been displaced by the Hurricane.

I suspect there are a lot of stories like this that will never become known to the media. In fact, I almost wish people wouldn't tell the local news, etc. What guys like Brad are doing they aren't doing for publicity. They're doing it because they're listening to their hearts - and I think it's great.
