Don't Make Me Use The Bat
We've got bigger concerns right now, but still seemed there should be a thread.

Especially after the Nuggets just beat the Warriors in Game 1 on a 1-4 clearout with 37yr old Andre Miller imitating Tyreke for the win.

it's a veteran's game, the playoffs. been begging the kings organization to acquire some of those for awhile now. i'm afraid john effing salmons and chuck hayes just don't cut it...

things that are really, really obvious but that I just realised: looking at the teams left over in the playoffs right now and even most of the teams that didn't make it as far, one trend is overwhelming. basically every single team has an elite frontcourt defender. Bogut, Duncan, Ibaka/Perkins (splitting up the man defense and help defense thing), Gasol, Hibbert, Noah, Chandler. Miami doesn't quite fit that scheme, but they make up for it otherwise. looking at the first round exits, you still have your Asiks, Howards, Garnetts, Sanders and semi-viable candidates in Horford and Lopez. I can't think of a single very good frontcourt defender that hasn't made it into the playoffs and all the elite guys (excepting Asik, maybe) are still playing. the big guy with defense thing has been a prerequisite for success in the NBA for a long time, of course, but has it ever been quite as obvious?

edit: too bad Brick won't have Geoff Petrie to kick around for this very obvious blind spot of his anymore.

I would agree with you on your veterans observation. But in this case miller was one and out to a very young team. Who can tell. Now, theo games into the Sn Antonio series the young Warriors are still alive and kicking. As for Salmons and Hayes, don't agree with you there. Let's keep those two talented veterans until we'd have replacements proven better.

nobody is proposing we cut them for nothing. Salmons has value as an expiring contract and Hayes has so little value that keeping him around in hopes that he returns to at least some kind of form seems the most appropriate way of dealing with him. however, if they see the floor in any meaningful way next season, it'd be a sign of another failed year. in other words, I strongly disagree with your categorisation of those two as "talented veterans".

well, first, talent usually wins out in the end. and there's no guarantee either way. yes, the warriors are alive and kicking against san antonio. they scored an impressive road win last night. but in that first game, golden state's talent should have snagged them an early 1-0 advantage, but the spurs' veteran poise kept them in the game through two overtime periods, and that edge was enough to secure the win in the end. so it slices both ways...

personally, i take my chances with seasoned veterans as support for my young talent. i have no problem with salmons and/or hayes as deep bench veterans, but they are not the anchor veterans that help set the tone for a young team, particularly the laconic salmons. i want proven winners. i want andre miller's grit, his defensive prowess, his willpower to get to the rim in spite of the odds, in spite of his age...

as amazing as stephen curry is, we saw an important stumble in game one. when the spurs took his jump shot away, he couldn't get to the rim, and that inability to get to the rim allowed the spurs to send the game into overtime (this is one advantage that a player like tyreke evans has over stephen curry, and it's a very important one come playoff time). we'll see if these young warriors can shoot their way to a championship, but if they run into memphis' top-3 defense in the western conference finals, i'm not so sure we'll see curry, thompson, barnes and co. light it up like they're doing against the creaky spurs...

What are everyone's thoughts about Derrick Rose not coming back to play? Personally, and from my knowledge (2nd year grad student - physical therapy), his knee is definitely structurally intact. He has been cleared to play months ago and has been participating in 5 on 5 drills, practices, and run throughs with his team for some time. It is my belief at this point in his recovery process, it is mostly mental. I am sure his knee is not what it used to be, but it never will be what it once was, and I think he may be struggling with that realization. However, I am not privy to his recovery process and do not know the details, so it is hard to come to any firm conclusion. However, if he has not had any setbacks and everything has been going fine, I think he can at least give them 10-15 min a game. His presence alone would give them a huge boost. They need it.

it's been reported that he has been cleared to play since February and that he's been the Bulls' best player in practice. the issue is apparently entirely mental. I say this without any value judgement. people judge Rose for not feeling ready to play, but they underestimate the mental strain that Rose is under. remember, he basically played the whole season banged up and then got injured, not on a freak accident, like a stepped on foot, but a movement he performs dozens of times ever game. he just lands awkwardly and all of a sudden has to sit out more than half a season. I don't fault him for not being able to play despite being cleared, if he feels the need to recover for the whole offseason and then make an entirely new start, then so be it. the Bulls wouldn't win this series anyway.

Don't insult Andre Miller again please, its Tyreke Evans imitating Andre Miller not the other way around.
