Will they have 20 roster spots or something? They already have all of these guys expected to get minutes:

Kevin Porter Jr.
Jalen Green
Amen Thompson
Jabari Smith Jr.
Alperen Sengun
Tari Eason
Kenyon Martin Jr.
Cam Whitmore
Usman Garuba

If they sign a couple of free agents they're bumping recent first round picks out of the rotation completely. What an absolutely crushing draft night this was for Cam Whitmore. Not only did he lose millions of dollars sliding to pick #20 but then he gets picked by a team which might not have any minutes for him for the next 4 years.

Rip City twitter going nuts on poor Trysta Krick today for saying fans should be excited about their draft and the youth they are building and that Portland isn't a free agent destination (and implying trading young to re-build around Dame is a pipe dream)

She's right. Sometimes it is hard to hear the truth.
Fans here are really loyal to a fault to the players. When one of the best players in Timbers history (Diego Valeri) was only a late sub in his final season, the fans railed on the club, he ultimately left and went back to his home club of Lanus, everyone was saying what a disgrace it was. Timbers were going to host Lanus for a friendly testimonial sometime the following year, but he quietly left the team and I think retired after only 9 appearances in the Argentinian league so maybe just maybe he was done.

Dame has been so great for Portland but you can't just throw everything away to make him happy. Either he commits to be willing to go through a rebuild or he asks out. He's kind of behaving like a person in a bad marriage hoping the other person will cheat so they can file a divorce but not look like the bad guy.

anyway, Portland fans ability to eat our own is second to none. I have really divested myself of Timbers because ownership is truly awful, but it was a long time coming because I was getting disillusioned with the constant bickering and sniping at each other among different groups of supporters who wanted different things (some of it not even related to the product on the pitch).

We might hear tonight that they have decided to work with Dame on a trade. If you are A free agent do you want to sign with the Blazers knowing if you don’t get at least to the second round this year they would likely blow up the team and trade all the vets? We might have our choice between Grant and Kuz by tomorrow

I still don’t know if that changes anything. No way would I stay there if I’m Grant. They WILL sell him to the highest bidder either at the deadline if things go south or in the offseason

Now I wonder if Grant takes that original deal with them. If he does, and the Blazers decide to rebuild at the deadline then they have two major contracts to move just to start over again. lol. Watch them waste Scoot like the Raptors are wasting Barnes but maybe even worse.

if they re-sign Grant, maybe they trade Simons and Kris to the Wizards for Kuzma in a sign and trade haha.

Dame Scoot
Sharpe
Grant Rupert
Kuzma
Nurkic

Not ideal but if Sharpe takes a big leap they could be a playoff competitor

They need to trade Scoot for someone that will make them a contender.

Not sure who that is but they need to do that imo
And that would be the dumbest thing they could do IMO, haha. They perhaps just lucked into two consecutive drafts that can save them from the usual multi-year irrelevance.

I agree with you but saw a tweet that they were all in on trying to build a contender and if thats the case what they have + Scoot isn't enough for that.

If they are going to be a contending team they need to trade Scoot because there's no other way.

I would have traded Dame a while ago but I'm not the GM

I agree with you as well, they should pick a direction but the best one is staring them in the face and it's go young. So far it sounds like they are going to try the cake and eat it too method. A method the Kings practically wrote the book on in Fox' early years and one the Warriors just let play out on the way to unmitigated disaster with their top picks. If you have star young talent, either give them the ball, and most importantly the chance to fail along with more young cheaper talent in subsequent drafts or trade them for something that makes you better now. Even if it works with a win now/youth team you've still likely limited the upside of the young players in the long run. Those reps early on matter if you expect to be developing stars.
