NBA Beat: Grading the off-season

Jerry should have thought that through and added a few more exclusions. :D

The fact that we won't be starting Greg or relying on him to do the things a starting center does should keep us from having to worry about his inconsistency. Five or six rebounds and a block and a half a game are all I'm hoping for out of him. Anything extra is a bonus with which I will be pleasantly surprised.

Ostertag never struck me as quite a levitator. What he lacks in athletic ability, he will hopefully make up by bringing some interior toughness. He also shoots about 55% from the line and average 0.5 assists per game :(

From jazz fans, I've heard ostertag is a very inconsistent player. I hope he finds some inspiration playing for the kings. Hopefully, Adelman won't be having to go through this...

Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan, ripping center Greg Ostertag for getting no rebounds in 33 minutes against Minnesota: “If you’re going to be 7-feet tall, you can’t play like you’re 6-1. ... I don’t know what else I have to say or do. I’m not going to beg. I’m not going to kiss his feet to play, I’m not going to go that far. But I will kiss anywhere else he needs kissed if that will help him play.” :D
Hmm... Sounds like the same center we had wearing # 21. Showed up half the time and is his last year was a 7 foot PG.

We traded one of the most intelligent players in the game for one with the least sense. In so doing we alienated our best scorer. He wants to be traded and makes no bones about not wanting to play with our aging and ailing Superstar.
Our Superstar says not to worry (with his enormous mouth), he will take this team on his broad shoulders and then you will see (I can see Peja standing in the corner rolling his eyes, shaking his head). It's been an interesting offseason, couple more like this and we will be picking up even better prospects in the draft.

Intelligence is great...but begins to be of limited use when its all you have left.

Actually what we did in the offseason was restore some balance to our frontcourt. During our best years we had two great passing big men in Webb and Vlade who were mostly finesse oriented, and then one or more thug/defensive big men to come in in relief and provide a defensive/rebounding spark. Last year with the acquisition of Miller and Webb's injury the balance got tipped so that basically EVERYONE in the frontcourt was a skill player, good passer etc., and basically nobody could provide defensive spark. With Miller and Webb this year we're just back to where we were a couple of years ago -- two excellent passers to start, big thug to bring defense/rebounding off the bench (when he's so inclined). If we brought back Vlade, we would have had a real problem with frontcourt defense unless Webb was able to turn back the clock 5 years and become a significant shot blocker again.

It is a possible scenario but there are many others. We won't know for sure untill they actually start playing. I imagine Texas triangle to be a good test in the beginning.

Bricklayer,

Are you saying we exchanged Vlade for Tag to restore the balance. Ooooooo. Tag doesn't know where the ball is half the time, you ever wach him play. I don't think most of Sac fans want to face the question of who has to be exchanged to restore the FUTURE. I'll give you a hint (BOOOOO!!!).

(I can see Peja standing in the corner rolling his eyes, shaking his head).
If I see this, I will personally go down and kick him into gear. Peja can not allow himself to be taken out of his game, either by opposing players or some sort of snit about Vlade or Chris or the fact that he didn't like the way his eggs were cooked this morning. Peja is responsible for Peja's game. If he moves without the ball and gets open, he will get his looks. If he stands in the corner, rolling his eyes, with his defender draped all over him, probably not so many. Here's a thought, how about he add a little post-up move over smaller defenders, then he might get even more touches.

Kingsgurl,

I share your frustration with Peja. People say he choked in the PO. How can they tell, he didn't even play. He spend most of the time in the corner rolling his eyes.

BTW, never saw you come down

You have to look at what the Kings will be expecting from Tag, or rather from the back up Center position. Someone to come in, clog the lane, set some wicked picks, grab some boards, block or alter some shots. Tag can be dumb as a post, and still be quite effective at all those things. We aren't looking for him to run the offense. Looking at it that way, I see Tag as being more effective at those things in limited minutes than Vlade could have been. Tag adds a different dimension, which adds balance.

Peja is a gym rat so I think that he is trying to avoid certain company rather than practice.

Maybe because he generally does not spend his summers on this continent.
Piski...which is it...he is trying to avoid someone or he doesn't spend summers on this continent...you can't have it both ways.

I see you are well versed in Bill Clinton Theory of Reasoning.

You can argue and not lose any argument, as long as you don't belive in what your saying.

I'm sorry. Your post makes no sense to me. The Kings need a more physical player down low, as we HAVE finesse guys. Tag is more physical than Vlade....with me so far? Tag will not be running the offense, he will be doing the dirty work.

Says who ? BTW it is not PISKI

This is either a dumbfest or a Chriss Webber/ Bill Clinton fan club.

What I am saying is you are either dumb or disingenuine. If 6 months ago I posed a quetion on this board if you would trade Vlade for Tag you'd laugh me off.

ILV - He's not contradicting himself. He's saying you got his name wrong... It's piksi, not piski...

;)

Now, back to the topic ...

I STILL think the C is too low for our off-season grade. Based on what was available, I'd be leaning towards a B or at least a B- for what Petrie was able to accomplish. If anything, I would give us an INC pending the actual performance of our new acquisitions in at least one game-time situation.

I was referring to him saying that peja is avoiding chris by not going to the gym and then defending peja for not going to the gym by saying he is not on this continent....I did not even acknowledge the name spelling because is was a detractor from the point.

Ah, sorry...

;)

I'd really be interested, now that I think about it, in hearing how Peja Stojakovic can be defined as a "gym rat."

We can patiently wait together!

You if the Kings had signed a FA that averaged 20 points 10 rebounds 4 assists and a couple blocked shots per game to last years roster they would be the buzz of the NBA and writers would be praising GP for another great trade... Webber returing from being injured all last season is hardly mentioned and when it is it's with question marks.

we will see very soon who worked on what and how much during the summer. At least that can not be hidden. Everyting else would be speculative meaning that my guess is as good as yours or anybody elses.

Are you kidding me the sotries of his late night one on one games with JWill are legandary, Doug Christie had to physicaly throw Peja out of the tpractice faciity in 01 when he wanted to practice shooting from behind screens, remember the trash can footage? Heck I even heard the Janitors at the practice facility leave decon in Pedja's locker.

So now you're saying your comment about Peja being a "gym rat" was a guess?

Whatever.

When you make a bald-faced statement about Peja that anyone can question, you should be willing to back it up with facts instead of vague rhetoric.

Peja a "gym rat"? No way.

I honestly don't care how much they work out in the summer as long as they don't choke in the playoffs.

No it was not a guess. You do not have any facts either. My facts - would be his steady improvement every year. Every year he getts better at something. He is not done yet.
Let me ask You a question - how comes that somebody (according to you) who is not a gym rat improves steadyly ove a longer period of time - and on the other hand an other players who are supposed to be "working" hard still can not "guard a chair" and only "hit every othe free throw."
I am sure that You remeber Peja when he first came to the Kings. Now how is it possible for somebody to develop so much without working hard. Nobody is really that talented.
Additionally, I have heard Adelman praising Peja's work etics many times.

Yep

piksi - If Peja is improving every year, perhaps this will finally be the year he actually shows up in the playoffs?

I'm sorry for being snide, but you're confusing natural talent with being a "gym rat," something which Peja has not been.

I am not going to continue to try and get you to understand that you're using the term incorrectly.

Peja wasn't even in the country, so I cannot for the life of me imagine him being a gym rat, spending hour after hour after hour at the practice facility, working on his game.

Bibby and Bobby are gym rats. Peja isn't. It's that simple.
