Gotta say the arena had a buzz today, the game also did not disappoint either. It was another weird game day technical services day. Last time things went this weirdly the Ms won, so that might be good mojo. The Monarchs All Decade team intros could have been handled better, the whole ceremony seemed rushed. They had the wrong number for Tangela then had tech difficulties with her message to the fans. Also sounded like Jamie Coffey didn't know Ruthie was actually in the building. I could have sworn she had said that she wasn't able to attend at the exact moment she was hugging Jerry Reynolds.
I didn't hear coach T's post game talk, but I hope he said that Dorrell had finally started to do the things that coach Whiz wanted to see her do in disrupting the opponent's offense. I don't always see what the coaching staff wants her to do that she hadn't been doing that Newton seemed to do from the get go last season. But today, she looked fantastic and Lindsey Whalen had no idea what to do when Dorrell was on her.
This was the first time in a long time I think we saw a sustained glimpse of the defense that has been missing most of the season. A few major lapses, and a few clunky switches, but everybody looked lively, no, make that extremely lively and active. The Ms made all the hustle plays and had to have had more dives to the floor and head's up play per capita than the Sun did. Another tremendous block from Lawson.
Offensively, it seemed once they figured out where the court lines were in their front court after the game started, the offense looked pretty good for a while. Then it disappeared, then it reemerged, then it disappeared and it reappeared at very opportune spots for the remainder of the game. Never thought they lost control of the game or ever were in danger of letting this one go. It was the first time in a long while they reached back in their pocket for some defense when they needed it to hold off that final Sun charge.
I'm going to give Powell some props. She had a tough time offensively today but she was ALL over the boards.
Nice game, they gotta take advantage of all the benefits of it by going to Seattle on Tuesday and winning there and finishing out the week by winning at home against New York. Very nice work today.
