Monarchs v Storm Game Discussion

#1
I agree with the thoughts in a previous thread that the Ms seemed to have decided (as I had hoped) to take out a can of whoop### on the first team to show up and play at ARCO since that forgettable game last week.

I saw some fans working Mrs. Whisenant cross court from me when she came out and took her seat, so I hope they made a difference.... ;)

Whatever got into Ticha tonight, I hope to hell it stays. I agreed with Coach T, that's the best offensive performance I'd seen from her in a LONG time. (Did I say "Ticha" and "offensive performance" and "best" in the same sentence????) She was brillant. That baseline spin move she put on Gortman (and as Koz said on air, "left her standing there with her jog bra on the ground") alone would have been enough to qualify her game as brilliant but she was on the verge of going completely unrecognizingly out of character in that first half. I hope she decides to keep that persona for another 30 some odd games.

Nice to see what this team looked like when they're in sync again. Brunson, gosh - she is intent on getting into the Whisenant dog house early. She blew two defensive assignments again. The 2nd time I saw Whiz give her that "I didn't yell at you the first time you missed rotating, but NOW I'm mad" look. I mumbled...."ooooh B I think you're about to get yanked reaaaaaaaaaaal soon" and I saw Whiz motion for Maiga-Ba and I mumbled "like, as soon as Maiga can get her warmup off" But her vertical continues to be ridiculous. I just hope she can get her focus back and start playing complete games - she did a nice job on Jackson tonight despite not always making her proper help rotation and leaving somebody open for a layup. But her offense was nearly non existent until garbage time. Buescher is still pulling shots out of her proverbial... nice game all around. They get Lawson going? And if Kim Smith remembers how to score?

I was worried about the start of this game because not only was Jamie Coffey weird tonight with the intros - I mean seriously, what copy could she have possibly gotten that still had Simone Edwards on the roster?!? Maybe it was a ploy because that might have thrown Seattle off, because every single one of them whipped their head around with a "wha????" look on their face when Edwards' name and number were called. Then the production guys could not get the player photos up for the Monarchs intro. Maybe they should do that every game. I also think the good vibe from having the old Monty costume back continues to make the difference. That badly dry cleaned version that they started the season with was scary looking - made Monty look like he'd aged 50 years.

To those of you who picked up the STH gift bags tonight, from what I saw it looked like they went all out with a whole buncha stuff. I forgot to get mine tonight - but I thought I saw folks with replica championship banners???? I was just hoping for a media guide.

I also missed what happened with Jackson and Maiga to get Maiga caught with a T and walking away rubbing her jaw.

I didn't get to see this game, just heard it on the radio. Was Penicheiro guarded by Sue Bird? If so, then that's not all that surprising since Bird is not a good defender. But it's still great to see Ticha looking for her shot. How many 3s has she made this season so far? 3? 4? That's probably her season total last year. Seattle as a whole is not good defensively, and they are a poor road team (last year, at least), so the outcome doesn't surprise me all that much considering that the 'Narchs didn't even really play the last game.

Heard Ron Artest was there again. I know he used to go to Fever games a lot back when he was in Indy, too. He seems to be a big fan of the women's game.

Maybe Bekkah misses DeMya on the bench. :)
STH gifts bags will be available on Jun 2nd and Jun 10th. There was a sign there when I picked up my bag.

Yes, he and his family were there again. His daughter seemed very interested in the game. Ron seemed to be pointing things out to her from time to time.

Bird might have had her some of the time, but it really didn't matter Ticha was aggressive tonight and actually looked like she was intentially deciding to be a part of the offense and using what we always knew her abilities to her advantage. That spin move was absolutely ridiculous and when I saw the replay on the board, Gortman essentially was standing there waving the white flag trying to figure out how Ticha shook her so badly.

Yeah, I wondered what happened there, too. All I know is Jackson wouldn't stop yappin' out there for a long time.

I agree that Bekkah doesn't seem quite focussed. Kara still looks tired to me. Erin is playin' pretty darn good out there and had some rather amazing made baskets. Ticha had a great night. Yes, Kim Smith had a bit of a rough night, but I see hints of a good player. Dorrell looks great to me.

Thanks MBF, I wondered if I was the only one thinking that was the most bizzarre intros I've heard for the Monarchs. Wow. And I had a guest with me (bro). My brother said I'm loud. I said really? Perfect! :D

The Maiga-Ba technical (I never did she what she did to get it, although swearing might have been involved) was a direct result of Jackson landing an elbow to her mouth. If this were the Kings and they were in the playoffs, Jackson would be suspended for a game.

As for the rest of the game, yahoo! The Monarchs are back in Arco! I don't know who those substitute Monarchs were last week, but I'm glad the real ones are back.

glad to see you guys get back on track, just so you know, i am 3 - 0 in games i've attended this season. not that anyone is paying attention to those types of things.

some are saying in houston that we have a triple threat again in H-town! Dominque Canty like Ticha has found the offence we have been waiting for. see you guys in the WCF again! should be fun!!!

This is the Monarchs team that I want to see every night. Not necessarily the blowout victory, but the all out effort and hunger that was evident the moment they stepped on the court last night.

Props to Ticha and Yo for stepping up and leading this team last night. They truly were the dynamic duo. I think we all agree that Ticha had an amazing game and it's something we'd like to see more of. And it was great to see Yo doing what she always does; cleaning up the boards, getting those chippy points in the paint, and diving over media tables. Ok, maybe we can live without the last one... but it was funny. Even better when Ticha picked up the phone on the table after helping Yo up :D

What a dramatic change from the game we saw last week, and a welcome sight at that. Here's hoping that Houston game served as a wake-up call.

I can't believe I completely missed what happened with Maiga and Jackson, all I saw was the ref signaling for a tech and Maiga rubbing her jaw. And why wasn't Seattle assessed the automatic tech for bouncing the ball off of a Monarch head? Not enough "face" contact? The bench went absolutely crazy in Erin's honor when that happened.

Here's My Two Cents

1. I thought TP was sensational. Her offensive aggressiveness was very evident. The no look passes, the spin move on the baseline, the cold-blooded three to stick a dagger into the heart of the Storm, the last second lay in before halftime. IT WAS ALL GOOD!! If she does not make the WNBA All Decade team, i will be mad:mad:.

However we all know that this is a one out of every 10, 15 games for Ticha. We need 8 to 12 points a night out of her every game. I don't think that is too much to ask.

2. Yo Griffith is playing out her career on fumes. But she scored 21 points and grabbed big rebounds and led this team in a big way.

3. I do not know what is going on with Rebekkah Brunson. But if she does not get her act together, she may see her minutes cut once and if walker comes back.

4. The improvement of Buchler and Haynie makes the bench the best in the WNBA once Walker does come back. I am very impressed with Erin Buchler. She is playing her role very effectively.

5. Seattle has some things going on on their team. Did anybody notice that Lennox and Bird came off of the bench in the second half? Very odd.

Postgame Quotes

a sample:

Seattle Guard Sue Bird:
“Yeah, we just played like poop...."

Monarchs Forward/Center Erin Buescher:
(On the play of Monarchs Guard Ticha Penicheiro)
“She had that look in her eye before the game and she did not want to lose. She is just a competitor and you don’t find too many competitors like her in the game and it’s fun to be around, it’s fun to be a part of, and it’s contagious, too. She just gets that look in her eye. The last game against Houston, that burned her, and that showed tonight. She punished Seattle for the Houston game.”

Why oh why aren't there any highlights of the game anywhere?! I want to see Ticha's baseline move again!

KCRA-TV (Channel 3) caught one of Ticha's patented spin-move no-look passes last night during their 11:00 p.m. newscast!

Some friends of mine who live near Ticha and walk their dog in the same park said that they saw her out walking her dog last week after the Houston debacle. She was sitting on the bench totally deflated. I'm sure that loss really motivated her, Yo and the rest of the team. I'm glad her teammates recognize that competitiveness and draw on it. She's a true leader.

Unfortunately, I got home too late last night to catch any of the newscasts :(

There aren't even photos on Getty Images, I want to see a picture from last night of the back of Ticha's jersey... anyone happen to get a shot of that? Cause I sure as hell didn't notice this, never would have thought to look for it either:

Penicheiro went 6-for-7 in the first half -- even with her last name misspelled on the back of her jersey -- and hit a driving layup with 3.1 seconds left to put the Monarchs up 49-29 at halftime.
....got that from the game recap on ESPN

Please please please don't let that mean that Ticha Penechero was the one we saw playing out of her mind last night. and that Penicheiro will return and make us crazy again ;) I never noticed it either, but I guess that went along with the whole weird player name/picture theme last night.

I noticed her jersey, but not the spelling. It looked to me to be thinner than the usual jersey, more transparent.

Must have be part of that pre-game introduction mojo.
