Mbah a Moute-Williams trade? (merged)

He was decent defender. But by no means will I be crying watching him walk to plane at the airport as he throws up a peace sign. Milwaukee is not a good team. If he is so talented then why trade for a 2nd round pick? He is low tier role player he was no better defender than donte Greene
Wha? Mbah a Moute is no better defender than Donte Greene? If Donte Greene were as good a defender as Luc Mbah a Moute, he wouldn't be currently playing basketball in New Zealand.

27 years old with bad knees its all downhill from here. We see him lock down pj tucker and markeef Morris and we want to make him DPOY. Now I'm not saying Williams is an all star either. But 27 and bad knees role player vs 22 year old with potential on a team that has no chance of making playoffs?

Back to luc. Who have we seen him lock down that he is so highly regarded all of a sudden as a great defender?

He did very well against CP3 breaking a long string of double doubles. I think this opened people's eyes as to what his potential as a defender is. He could guard positions 1-4 and there aren't many like that in the league. As far as I am concerned, I wanted to see more.

Fine, he d'd up CP3. But anybody that's actually highly regarded. ;)

Heres my investigative reporting for the night ...

First, here is the most recent Derrick Williams 'highlights' from a preseason game last month ... Tell me if you noticed anything.

Aside from how he played (it is a highlight real after all) I thought he looked noticeably lighter. I have visions of his first two seasons in the NBA and he was a little to chunky for my liking. Never looked like he was in great shape. Then I did some google image searching for old Wolves media day photos to see if I was correct, and I came across this post from about a month ago on a Timberwolves blog.

He does appear to be in very good shape. Small Forward shape. We'll see.

If he can play the 3 this is a great deal after taking some time to do some research. We all know too well Adelman hates playing younger players. DWill has shown signs of talent and I remember being mad years ago when this team wouldnt take risks like this. We are also in a spot where we cant say no to legit young potential.

Im just not sold on giving up Luc Bah, he is probably the prototype for what Malone is preaching bad knees and all, I just hope this move pans out and the young guy comes in to work and not prove himself at the expense of what llittle bit of teamplay we have starting to show itself here. Best believe this guy has the tools to be a great NBA talent.

He's in for a helluva shock when it comes to fan support. I know that was just a pre-season exhibition game but geez... pretty bad when the squeaking of the shoes on the hardwood drowns out the "roar" of the crowd.

while i would have preferred to see someone like hayes moved for williams rather than a useful roleplayer like mbah a moute, i'm still satisfied with this trade. kings fans really need to get out of the habit of deifying minor talents. i liked mbah a moute. he represented the right kinda roleplayer for this team. but the make-up of this roster is hardly solidified to the point where management would not consider trading players outside of cousins and mclemore. i don't expect most of these kings to be around in two seasons. mbah a moute was no exception. the plan is becoming more clear by the day: bank on the 2014 draft. trading vets for young prospects/reclamation projects is a positive step in the direction of "tanking," vile a word as that is for so many of you...

Thanks for the write up.

I dont know, it does seem whenever a trade is made its met with either extreme support or extreme opposition and emotions tend to cloud things.

I love that you noticed he is considerably lighter. I'm sure he's been given a list of things he needs to do to be a better SF. I'm more than happy to embrace him and support him. I actually think he'll be a nice surprise for all of us, though only time will tell

Luc was a good if not elite defensive specialist. But we don't have a lot of potential scorers in this team that could hide his offensive weakness.
DMC-JT-Williams frontline would be better than DMC-JT-Luc frontline because JT is a garbage collector out there.

Not that I would like Luc to be moved but looking at the bright side on this trade, Williams got linked closer to a bust because he was a number 2 pick that did not deliver stats like a number 2 pick. But certainly it was just a tough rotation for him in that Wolves team. He started there with a PF body but Love was already there. So he transitioned going more to the 3 but it's not as easy as changing clothes. Williams is a hard worker and you can see his body of work trimming down to be more agile at SF.

One thing that is nice with Williams in Sacramento is that one guy on the sidelines named Corliss Williamson. Corliss is a better bruiser, but he's probably a much better mentor/model for Williams than any staff in TWolves.

Not too many teams are in the market for a 6'7" center who is owed $6 million next year.

I've got your back about the "t" word. :)

Fixed it for you. Made it much more palatable and didn't really change the meaning at all. See how easy it is? ;)

Reading between the lines here a little bit, it sounds like Rick really wanted Williams to be a different kind of player. He talks a lot about moving without the ball and being active and in motion on offense. Guys like Kevin Martin and Corey Brewer fit his mold better for what he wants from the wing positions. Williams is never going to be a Reggie Miller type. He's best when he's exploiting his size mismatch by catching the ball on the perimeter faced up and surprising the defense with a quick jumper or a slash to the basket. In other words, his offensive skillset is more about spacing and angles than screens and quick cuts. He could also back people down and score over them and he gives you something Kevin Martin and Corey Brewer won't give you on defense -- the ability to hold his own in the post. He's a better fit for a team that wants to slow the game down a bit and look for mismatches. This isn't a great comparison, but it's a bit of a throwback to the days when Bonzi and Artest were the wings for us.

If he misses, we are out a great defender.
No guarantees he'd be a great defender by the time we're good again. With knees like that, he could lose lateral quickness quicker than other aging players. I loved what Luc brought our team but as it's fairly clear we aren't intending to win a championship in the next three years, this is probably a good move.

Sure we lose a good defender now but we may gain a valuable asset for the future.

To be fair, it was a preseason against a non-NBA team.

This town isn't big enough for the two of us. One of us will have to leave. I remember a day when a lot of us thought young guys needed veteran leadership. Ah, yes we have Salmons, Outlaw, and Hayes. At least have someone who sets a good example for the tadpoles.

Oh, dear, I forgot Landry who probably won't be around either. It makes that signing all the more nonsensical. It seems like we all can come up with an argument that may not be accurate but at least will make us happy.

DWill = the next Donte Greene. Like I said about T-Rob after he was drafted, hopefully they trade him before the whole league finds out, maybe for a player like Asik.

hey pete could we at least wait until after the clippers game on friday before we trade luc?

How long have you been watching the NBA? Not the Kings... The NBA.
Most semi-knowledgeable NBA fans are well aware of Moute's defensive reputation over the years. Funny that you're asking that question. Kinda cracked me up a bit.

Our new rivals?

Most recently is Gerald Green.

Bingo! Exactly what I've been preaching for a couple of weeks now. Most of this team is going to be gone in two years. I liked Mbah a Moute, but for god's sake, we got him for 2nd round picks. Why? Because he's mostly a one dimensional player, and has bad knee's. Not saying there's not a place for that. God love the Tony Allens of the world. But those are the guys you add as one of the final pieces to a contending team. Those are the guys you can afford to start because you have four other starters that are capable of putting the ball in the basket. Lest anyone didn't notice, we're having a bit of trouble doing that of late.

Right now, the front office is looking to the future, and I think their more than willing to sacrifice some of the present to that regard. The bottom line is, if your thinking you won't be able to contend for two, maybe three more years, and I mean actually contend, not just barely make the playoffs, then what future does Mbah a Moute have with us, with what appears to be chronic knee problems? Zero! So what we just did was turn two second round picks into Derrick Williams. Who knows, in two years, he may not be here either. But that's up to him. Hopefully he gets a proper chance to what he's capable of.

I could understand the outrage about losing Reke but losing LMRAM for Williams really? Who knows he could even be used in a package to land something else down the line at this point we are not a playoff team and we are better off trying to get players who may have potential I loved what Prince did on the floor for us but Derrick Williams is a good athlete and talent.

I don't get the outrage the team is moving in the right direction we benched Thornton we are seeing less Hayes and the FO is actually looking to make moves based on the future hopefully they find a way to get a shot blocking big while offloading Thornton and Thompson.
