ok sad Kings moving or not news aside.... this team will still be around somewhere (sac or anaheim)...

Lets say Thornton keeps up the same numbers he has the last 5 games through the end of the season.... Keeper? or not?

thoughts....

Well of course! Right now, he's one of the few players on the team that can create his own shot, and those guys are harder to find than guys that like to come off screens or spot up. Even Kevin Martin wasn't that good at creating his own shot, and mostly came off screens. Sometimes they ran double picks for him.

So far Thornton is putting out effort on defense, and he handles the ball well enough that he can bring it up the court on occasion. In other words, he's a very talented guy, and those are the one's you want to keep. Ask yourself this. If we list Tyreke as the most talented guard on the team. Who is the second most talented guard on the team. Is Thornton better than Jeter? Cisco? Taylor? Beno? And I'm speakinig current overall ability, and not potential. If you had to pick three players and one of them is Evans, who would be the other two. I know Thornton would be one of my picks.

I'm not fond of Evans/Beno/Thornton as a three guard rotation because we'd be giving up a lot of size and forcing Evans to guard wing players almost exclusively, but I think Thornton/Evans at least gives us a different look than Beno/Evans and a lot more firepower offensively. Jermaine Taylor has got some skills that could help us as well but the problem going forward is that there isn't enough playing time for everyone. What we need to do is somehow consolidate Taylor/Garcia/Beno/Thornton and come out of it with one much better player and some leftovers. Same goes for our front court, actually.

Reke/Thornton/Cisco needs to be the starting combo moving forward, anyone (Westphal?) who doesn't see that before it even happens needs their head checked.

First impressions are that he is now the third kid, behind Reke and Cousins. If he keeps anything like this productivity then he is another real find and makes the future significantly brighter,. All of a sudden you have a thrid big offensive weapon, even before you make a play for a top SF and add another top draft pick.

People who can't see what is building here are just plain nutty.

And we should be thankful that Petrie was finally able to use his magic. It is about time that he was given the power to do a full rebuild. There is no other GM I trust with a full rebuild then Petrie. We are lucky to have him.

I was excited about the trade when it went down and I'm not disappointed now. Dude has been beastin it for us.

One could worry if Thornton and Reke can coexist as starters. Reke isnt the PG we all hoped he could be (although he might get there yet), and the team does seem to do better when he (Reke) has another ball handler/distributer out there on the court with him. Thornton can handle better than Martin, but he's not really a passer. Two ball dominant "me first" type of scorers playing at the same time doesnt seem like a good combination.

However, we really need to give them some games together (more than we gave Reke/Martin) in order to really be sure. And if Thornton doesnt work out as a starter, the guy has some serious 6th man of the year potential as a second unit player.

Of course he's a keeper. He's a productive young player that at the very worst provides good shooting, and besides, he's almost all we have to show for the Martin deal. I thought trading for him was a pretty solid move considering that Landry's value seemed fairly mediocre, and so far, the deal is looking even more inspired.

Monty Williams is an idiot for starting Bellineli over him. What was he thinking? Couldn't use this kind of shooting next to CP3? Oh well, his mistake is our reward.

He certainly is a pretty efficient scorer. Of course you keep all our players unless you find someone better. And the test for each of them in turn, including Thornton, is will we win with them. So that leads me to the answer to your question - if we can improve our shortcomings around Thornton then keep him. I don't think we need to keep him to be a winner but he could play a roll with the right group which we haven't developed yet. I'm sorry I'm so evasive.

He's a really good offensive player and will have a role in this team. I think I was expressing skepticism in a past thread about whether he was a dime a dozen early on, but now that I've seen some games he's just a really smooth operator on the offensive end. He showed that in New Orleans, but apparently their defensive sticklers couldn't tolerate his effort on the other end of the court. But even with that he's still a highly serviceable scoring roleplayer and a net plus on the court as a 3rd-5th option of some sort on a decent team.
