Rumors have it that the maloofs made a pass at Arenas but its looking like he will remain a wizard and become another M. Redd LOL. Anyways my point is will the maloofs say screw the cap and just spend the cash? Elton brand will be CRAZY paired with Artest, score on and stop that!

Spend what cash????

We can't sign anyone else except for vet minimum.

If the franchise is interested in Arenas, they'd have to get him through a trade. But the only source which said we were after Arenas was the Washington paper, and Sacramento sources have said that story was wrong.

Anyway, whether you believe the story or not, there's nothing involving the Maloofs shelling out a bunch of money.

I dont think the kings offered arenas the vet min.

But that is all they CAN offer - we have no cap room to offer any more than that. We just can't do it, no matter how much they might want to spend.

Come on guys, we're not getting Arenas, Brand, Davis or anyone like that.

The MLE is all the Kings had this year in the way of buck$$. Thats it. The only acquisitions they can do now is by trade or the Veterans Minimum of around $1.5M to $2.0M depending on longevity.

An idea for KT and SAR is trying to trade them to one of the 4 youngest teams who need some veteran experience: Atlanta, Chicago, Portland and Charlotte. And KT and SAR have abilities. Both can rebound and SAR can score as well. Heck, he might stay active with Kings to help our kids along.

Mikki (10), Miller (10), Johnson (11), SAR (12) are the oldest followed by RonRon (9) and KT (9).

Gary Gerould was just on 1140 with Jason Ross @ 6:00 saying that GP has more in the works regarding our 1 and 4 positions this summer. He said if the plans work out all of our problems will be solved.

I wonder....

Not quite sure what we'd be looking to do at the 1 - we just signed Beno for five years and I don't think we gave him the full MLE to be a backup. Unless Petrie has his eye on a young PG who can be expected to take over the starting job in two and a half years, I don't know what exciting moves we can be expected to make at the 1.

At the 4...we're probably best off getting rid of some contracts...

Well, Artest, KT and Shareef would balance out an expiring Marbury under the cap and would solve some "4" problems while involving the "1". Hmm.

It was Jerry Reynolds that was on with Jason Ross.

They have players that have contracts expiring and instead of letting them go they re-sign their own players to very large contracts. The league allows you to go over the salary cap to resign your own players (in certain instances).

For instance, Joe Blow plays center for the Knicks and has been there several years so they have his Bird's Rights. They can offer him more $$$ and a longer deal because of that. If he was making $3 mil/year but was a player they felt deserved lots more, they offer him say $10 mil/year for 4 years. If they were near the cap before they are now $7 mil over it. Do that several times with your own players and you can see how they added that much salary up.

And don't forget that you have the MLE every year whether you are over the cap or not. This year it's worth somewhere mear $6 mil/year.

trades where they receive up to +125% of the salary they trade away, player resignings, player extensions, mid-level signings, vet signings, I could go on.

ok got that part... but you cant sign a free agent that would put you over the cap or wha?

If using the mid-level exception, yes, you can. Otherwise generally no. You can, however, sign and trade one of your players (meeting the proper criteria) to another team in order to add salary as well.

There are a million and a half technicalities, but yes, for the most part you cannot sign a player if their contract puts you even a dime over the cap. This is not true if you own the player's bird rights, however. Great example of this was the Kobe resigning, and the upcoming Arenas resigning.

I haven't posted this link in a while and it's well worth taking the time to wade through:

Make sure you bookmark it as you'll find yourself going back time after time. It is, without a doubt, the best definitive explanation of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and Salary Cap on the Internet.
