On Friday in New York, the Maloofs pulled out of the arena financing deal, which called for the public to may $255 million of the approximately $400 million arena cost. Amid fallout from their decision, which a league source told CBSSports.com Sunday has infuriated their fellow owners, the Maloofs have reiterated that they want to keep the team in Sacramento.

"I swear that is not going to happen," Joe Maloof told the Sacramento Bee, when asked if the family plans to file for relocation.

Commissioner David Stern backed the Maloofs' decision to pull out of the deal, calling it "their prerogative." But the Maloofs' fellow owners are at their wit's end with the family's bungling of the arena deal, according to a person familiar with the Board of Governors' stance.

"We can complain, we can jawbone them, but there's nothing we can do," the person said. "We can't force them to sell."

That can only be good news.

But according to Joe Maloof:

"We got a lot of support. I can't tell you how many owners came up to me and Gavin and George and told us, "You can't do this deal. Stay patient. Concentrate on getting your team better. There will be a time for a new arena." One owner – and I'm not saying who – said we should do the deal, but that was about it."

At this point in time, I'm far more inclined to believe an unnamed source than ANY member of the Maloof family. Logic should suggest, to anybody that's been following this ordeal, that many of the owners, especially the ones on the relocation committee, would be at least moderately upset with the Maloof's tactics. They negotiated a deal on their behalf only to have these spoiled children tell them that it isn't good enough.

How many members of the committee could possibly be happy about that?

all owners in favor of knifing Sacramento in the back to put a third team in LA and keep the Maloofs in the league say "aye".

There is one valid point in that comment - "Concentrate on getting your team better!!!!!!!!" I wish they'd listen to that part!

That is the LEAST important point in their agenda (whatever the heck it is). They probably dont even know.

This is fantastic news, assuming it's true and not some sort of damage control by the NBA.

The last few days I've been completely confounded and infuriated as to how the BoG could possibly support the Maloofs through this. A deal brokered by the NBA themselves and yet, according to the Maloofs, the other owners were heaping supportive comments on them calling it a bad deal and encouraging them to walk away? That doesn't make any sense.

The only thing that does make sense is for this to be true and the Maloofs are either hearing what they want to hear or flat out lying.

If this is true, the Maloofs have backed themselves into a corner and they will soon wish they had gone along with the deal.

Well done George. And congrats on all your success.

wait so who wrote this letter? people that work for the nba or sacramento people?

Chris Lehane wrote the letter, one of the best political strategists in the country, and the Executive Director of Think Big, the group KJ put together to engender support for the project. Here's his letter. Pretty scathing, but also lays out the real facts in a concise way:

http://www.thinkbigsacramento.com/assets/Press-Releases/Letter-to-Think-BIG.pdf

Karl Rove once called Lehane "one of the best opposition researchers in the Democratic party." He's known as an expert in the "politics of personal destruction." This is child's play for him.

Same guy who made the comment comparing the Maloofs to North Korea yesterday that got Grant's lace panties all twisted. He's timing the releases of his statements perfectly. I'd guess we're going to hear something further from him in 2-3 days.

The rebuttal to Lehane is interesting:

Eric Rose, spokesman for the Maloofs, furnished a scathing rebuttal to CBSSports.com in which he stated, among other things, that Lehane "does not know what he is talking about."

"Wild accusations cannot mask the financial calamity which would have befallen the city of Sacramento had the parties proceeded on a railroad arena project that made no economic sense," Rose said in the written statement. "The spokesperson for the utility companies who caused the California energy crisis and Goldman Sachs during the financial crisis is apparently now hunting for his next crisis management client."

Do they realize they're siding with the arguement that no city should ever contribute to building a sports arena ever? That can't make the other owners happy either.

It's becoming clear that the deeper they go, the more the Maloofs are weaving a web of lies. It's almost too preposterous to believe, which is what has gotten them this far. Just straight out, flat out lies. And it's not just George now. Joe apparently has no problem telling bald faced lies to his "customers". It's apt that this family derailed a "railroad arena project" because the entire family is a friggin train wreck!

What I don't understand is this: they claim it's a bad deal for the city.... what do they care? who are they to say such thing? If the city is willing to do it, then that's the city's prerrogative. Amazing how concerned they are about the city's well-being! </sarcasm>

The Big Lie - contorted philosophy/theory. The more you repeat it, the more people just might believe it, and the more you convince yourself it's right/justified. People in desperate financial trouble, in foreclosure, with debt collectors at their doorstep, often act very irrational. Interesting how Joe Maloof when asked about the families financial condition (Voisin interview) had so little to hang his hat on in response - mostly talking up their "Wells Fargo stock." They've got to now be one of, if not the most ragged bunch of no longer rich and famous owners in major league professional sports. Don't they realize that owning such a major sports franchise is not a way to get rich, but is just an exclusive rich mans hobby? Laughable, pathetic and tragic, all at the same time!

Such caring people. Which is why they suggested it makes more financial sense for the city to throw money at renovating old Arco, an asset they city neither owns nor is a tenant in, and that will spark no new development around it. And at a cost, according to the Maloofs themselves, that would be more that the cost of a downtown brand new arena. The city should take them on as advisers, along with their Anaheim based "economist".

What they're trying to do is poison the city and make sure that no arena gets built in Sacramento after they sell. Make it politically unpopular to finance an arena in Sacramento. That is the only result that could possibly be achieved with this strategy.

What is amazing to me is the need for the family to respond to people criticizing them. The more they respond, the more the are likely to make a mistake. Chris Lehane baited them, and they bit. Love it.

Well, don't know why they would want ot poison the well for AFTER they sell, but certainly whether its intentinal or unintentional, these sorts of comments could spell disaster for getting an arena built whether its alone, for the Maloofs, or for a new owner. You know the CAVE peopel will pull them out in an instant. Its completely irresponsible by the Maloofs in any scenario exept the one where they want to intentionally stop the arena process so they can leave.

I guess I see the Maloofs as childish and vindictive enough to not want anyone to build an arena in this city after they're out of the league. I suspect they know they will be out of the league shortly from a number of observations. One of them being that they're absolutely blowing up every single bridge they can find.

Rut-roh...

It's gonna get really interesting now. Eric Rose has no idea what he has just stepped in.

Bet they were shocked to see 16K plus screaming fans rooting for their team today which is probably the last thing they expected, knowing them. Also were apparently too scared to step outside of their sweet which is probably a good thing. Right now they're only hope is fans just disappearing, and I doubt they have a plan for the 16K+ they saw today combined with local and national media painting them as public enemy #1.

Something tells me their plan is not working out the way they intended. Seems to be a trend with the Maloofs.

So, other than the Maloofs and their paid representatives, is there ANYONE else publicly defending their stance in this debacle?

More from Ken Berger

"Responding to Johnson's accusation that the Maloofs backed away from the deal because they want to move the team, George Maloof said, "Our intention is to stay in Sacramento." But when pressed for a commitment that the family would not file a relocation petition with the NBA, he said, "Ask me in a year."

Like I said, the more the Maloofs talk, the more mistakes they make and more their true intentions become known.

Like I said, the more the Maloofs talk, the more mistakes they make and more their true intentions become known.

When they gave a powerpoint presentation at their press conference and the words 'relocation' or 'move the team' were referenced on 4 of the first 5 slides, that made their true intentions pretty transparent. The more they try and hide from it the more they lose credibility.

This is the first direct example of another owner expressing disgust toward the Maloof's actions. And it's a big one.

"George Maloof also disputed the notion fellow owners are infuriated by the Maloofs' refusal to consummate the arena deal. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, the chairman of the Board of Governors, told CBSSports.com Friday that he wished the Maloofs "had stayed and worked with the city" but that an arena deal in Sacramento "may be impossible" due to a "gap in trust." "

Also from the interview Ken Berger of CBS Sports had with George Maloof.

There is likely an organized effort on the part of David Stern and the BOG, feeding bits of information such as this to the media, effectively launching a campaign to portray these guys for who they are. Gotta understand that Stern can't do it directly. But I'd be willing to be money that other owners are checking with Stern before they go and talk to the media. It's also probably common knowledge among them that they want to get them out of the league asap. We'll probably see little quotes and interviews peppered into the media over the next 2 weeks or so. And all of it will drive the Maloofs nuts and cause them to become more reactive, thereby digging their own grave.

Also, if KJ knows that Stern and the BOG have his back regarding blocking a move (regardless of attendance/corporate support), and of course they will, because the NBA brokered the deal, then that empowers him to basically play the waiting game, standing his ground on the "not renegotiating" policy. It's brilliant, really, the perfect storm that is brewing to oust the Maloofs from the league.

Now, though, the Maloofs are trying to circumvent Stern yet again, saying they want to negotiate directly with the City (oh but not KJ). So basically everyone who they can't manipulate, they want out of the picture. This just simply isn't going to happen. They are going to be held to their word. Since they can't live up to their word, they'll eventually crumble. Who knows, maybe they'll come to their senses and take a sweet offer from Burkle. Funny, isn't this just about the exact same thing that happened at the Palms? They divested the equity and basically ended up upside down and then were forced out by defaulting. I wonder how close they are to defaulting on loans to the city/NBA?? I wonder how much they'll pull from their "tremendous personal wealth" just to hang on to a toy asset??? Once again, I conclude one of my posts about the Maloof with the only reasonable conclusion: INSANE!!!

This is what I'm confused about. Stern says that the arena "is not gonna happen" and KJ has said that it's "pretty much dead". I'm talking purely hypothetical but what if the Maloofs wake up tomorrow and finally realize that they have no future in the league and decide to sell to Burkle? Wouldn't the arena deal still be good? Or have they already scrapped it and all the council votes mean nothing since the original ownership group that agreed to pay $75 million are out of the picture.

In short, do we have to go over this whole process again or is the original framework still good in the hopeful event of Burkle coming to town?
