Low cost FA's that fill a need:

bajaden

Hall of Famer
I thought I would start a thread to get some ideas on which players that will be free agents that we could sign at a very reasonable price and fill a need for the team.

The idea struck me as I was watching the Bird man in the Nugget/Laker game the other night. He's a somewhat colorful dude, perhaps even more so than Pollard was, but he's a very good shot blocker and defender. He's also a freeagent who made less than a million last year.

Anyway, I'm open to ideas.

He made less than a million last year but will almost certainly make more next season. I'd bet somewhere along the MLE range, in fact. There are several other shotblocker/defenders out there who could fill a Pollard role for us, such as Zaza Pachulia or Marcin Gortat, but I don't think they will be cheap either. One name that has been mentioned is Kyrylo Fesenko, who used to be represented by Jason Levien. Utah has a team option to bring him back for cheap, and I'd imagine they would, but with all the chaos over there with Boozer, Okur and Millsap all free agents maybe he could slip through the cracks.

The Polish hammer!

Gortat would be a solid signing.

He might come here too...He'll get way more minutes behind Hawes/JT then behind Howard thats for sure.

Ike Diogu should be considered as an UFA since the Kings lost out on Blake Griffin. Coby Karl as a back-up 2 for the minimum, DJ Strawberry? Weak FA class...

Ditto to that.

Well to be honest, I wasn't looking for the obvious. Chris Anderson was under the radar a year ago and the Nuggets found a, well, a nugget. There are probably some players with talent that for what ever reason are just in the wrong place, or somehow gained a bad reputation that has haunted them. Diogu could be one of those that just didn't get a chance.

Anderson may get signed to an MLE, but I doubt it will be the Nuggets that do it. They have two restricted free agents in Kleiza and Petro that require qualifing offers. Their total salary projection for next year is going to be $72,143,441.00.. There aren't going to be that many teams with cap space next year, and those over the cap are trying to get under it. I think that in this economy there are going to be some deals out there.

What about Renaldo Balkman, he would fill in perfectly for Garcia when Francisco misses another 30 games next year. Honestly, Balkman would be a bad signing because he would make our whole team look more soft than already perceived. hes not a FA, but we could go get it.

trade the 31st pick for fesenko...

sign gortat for 3 mil for 2 years...

gortat + fesenko back up!!

or if Cleveland wins the championship we can loan joe smith for one year.. just for veteran leadership

We don't need veterans, we need young and hungry. Like courtney fortson on steriods...We are set in the big man department imo....Hawes needs to/will have to prove he can play 38mpp before we extend his contract, so that takes care of the 5 spot. JT is al but a lock to pull off a great sophmore season at a solid 36mpp, and Diogu should be extended at least one more season just in case something in his head "clicked". We will draft at least 1 big somewhere in the late first or second round, and that should round us off up front. I think the most major spot we need to fill is the Nick Van Exel position. A utility that is more like a superstar. preferably a guard who rebounds at 6-4 that can play the 1-2 easy. Wait a moment, Tyreke Evans fits that mold perfectly!!!!imo Evans > Rondo.....today! We should look at Steve Novak and sign Ben Gordon to a max deal then Draft Tyreke Evans if we really want to be proffessional about this. We would have a starting lineup that would look like this
Evans/BENO
Gordon/TERRENCE WILLLIAMS
Martin/GARCIA
Thompson/NOVAK
Hawes/IKE

who ever we get in the FA they better be young yes... joe smith was just a suggestion for a cheap contract for a year...

just please maloofs! please... dont pee off the capspace with boozer!!!

You forgot Noc.

I would love to avoid having a back up center that is 6'8". If/when the Kings resign Ike Diogu, I hope it is only with the intention of using him as the back-up PF. He should not ever play center unless the Kings are playing a super small ball team...

Back on topic:

Some FA that are on my radar:

Brandon Bass. He's an energetic PF/C who is a big body inside, but he's athletic and has a mid range jumpshot. Word is though that Dallas wants to keep him, and we all know Cuban isn't afraid to spend money.

Gortat out of Orlando. He's backing up Dwight, and is a solid player who has shown he can play, but I don't know if getting out behind Dwight is more important to him than leaving a contender. He'll still be a backup here, so maybe he would rather stay a backup on a contender.

Leon Powe. Boston will probably want Big Baby more than Powe, who is currently injured (and they have Perkins as well). The Celtics have a high salary as it is, so if they aren't interested in retaining Powe's services once KG is back, then he might be obtainable.

Brian Skinner from the Clippers. Haven't we been here before? Oh yeah, but Sac decided to dump the one guy who could actually rebound and block shots. LA already has bigs, and are apparently drafting Griffin. So Skinner could come very cheap.

Anthony Morrow. This undrafted player blew up with some great shooting with the Warriors, and he might want to leave that team, depending on what the interest is from outside the warriors.

Jason Maxiell. I doubt he falls under the "low cost" tag, but he's definitely worth it. He may seem small, but he plays much bigger with his energy and hustle. He rebounds and blocks very well for a guy his size. Remember this?

McDyess. Also a FA in Detroit, I doubt he would want to close his career with a trip to Sac. He will probably chase a ring, but he's still talented and can produce as shown by his play in Detroit.

I have been a fan of Maxiell's since college. I think he would be a great big man to add to the rotation and he is the type of player that can fill alot of different holes.

As you said, Bass isn't going to come very cheaply. I don't think he fits the "low cost" thread at all.

The Pistons already signed Maxiell to a contract extension through 2012 so he isn't hitting the market.

I really like the possibility of Gortat being that 3rd big for us, but we will be far from the only team to have him on our radar. There are a lot of teams that see the possiblities in what he showed in limited minutes.

Maxiel is too small, but he brings much needed toughness. If we had a full sized center backup, he would be a good 4th big. The problem with Maxiel, or Bass, or Diogu for that matter is that they are all too short to play any center at all, and ideally your 3rd big should be either a C or be able to swing from C to PF. You want to bring size off the bench, not run out of it. Now on the other hand if, and this appears unlikely now, but if for instance Thabeet fell into our lap inthe draft, then those guys would be very useful as the 4th big, a PF off the bench while Thabeet was the C off the bench.

Actually, come to think about it, a frontcourt of Hawes/Thompson/Thabeet/Maxiel with Noc occasionally swinging up would make me pretty giddy. We'd have it pretty much covered up front.

would any of you want pavel podkolzine? :p 7"5 something in the bench...

i bet that guy will come really cheap

also johan petro could be around.. he can be a PF/C back up guy
