Lineup changes yielding results
Coach Eric Musselman looks at a different starting five in the Kings' 112-96 victory over Utah.

Eric Musselman drove into the Arco Arena parking lot late Friday afternoon, hanging a right toward his team's facility before being stopped.

A security guard didn't recognize the home team's coach, requesting identification before finally allowing him in.

"I didn't know that guy yet," Musselman said.

Getting to know you, in other words, remains the theme from top to bottom for the Kings.

In the latest edition, Musselman mixed and matched nearly his entire bench to put the Kings back in the exhibition win column, 112-96 over the Utah Jazz in the first-year coach's Arco Arena debut.

All the while, he gave his veteran power forward a familiar taste of starting, albeit at an unfamiliar spot. Shareef Abdur-Rahim replaced Brad Miller at center, which indicates little other than a mid-exhibition season mix-it-up.

Abdur-Rahim produced, matching his highest point total yet (10) and grabbing an exhibition season-high eight rebounds. The long-term goal of being a starter full time, meanwhile, remains unchanged for the player who played the first three games behind Kenny Thomas at power forward.

"My understanding is that we're still competing for a position," Abdur-Rahim said. "A lot of times coaches want to see a lot of stuff. You have to be patient and see how things go."

What they chose not to see was point guard Jason Hart or centers Loren Woods and Vitaly Potapenko, all of whom have been absent often lately.

Early Friday, Musselman insisted that a player's minutes don't necessarily reflect his roster status, though Woods -- who didn't play Thursday against Phoenix and has logged five minutes in exhibition play -- said he couldn't help but deduce that he's "in the doghouse." Potapenko has yet to play because he hasn't passed a conditioning test.

The Kings must cut at least two players before Oct. 30.

The ones who had their names called made the most of it. Shooting guard Kevin Martin had his finest outing yet with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Point guard Mike Bibby had a game-high 23 points. Among the roster hopefuls, second-year point guard Ronnie Price turned in another solid outing, with eight points in 18 minutes in solidifying his roster position.

The other wrinkle in the starting lineup -- John Salmons for Ron Artest -- showed a new side of Salmons' skills, as he succeeded in Musselman's assignment of defending Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko.

"I thought (Salmons) did a very good job," Musselman said. "Kirilenko had him in size, but John did a good job with his foot speed and spacing defensively."

Nagging back spasms meant Artest was a game-time decision to play, and his magnetic resonance imaging exam before the game that turned up negative wasn't the only positive news of his day.

Artest eventually entered the game, logging 17 points, six rebounds, five steals, five assists and no turnovers in 30 minutes. His shooting wasn't crisp, though, as his 4-of-13 performance brought his exhibition total to 17 of 51.

Bibby, on the contrary, was sharp. He hit all four of his three-pointers, prompting Martin to chide him afterward for his well-known dislike of the NBA's new non-leather basketball.

"You still hate that ball, Mike?" Martin hollered.

"I'm lucky," Bibby said.

I fully expect two of Woods/Hart/Potapenko gone in some form.

Amundson and Williams should make this team, they've been doing everything they can and impressing overall in their games and seemingly in camp.

youd think pot and hart will be gone...

but im not sure about woods.. its either him or admunson...

loren really hasnt gotten much of a chance... mabye his not doing well at practice?

who knows... i would hope he gets to play a decent amount of minutes for at least one pre season game... just to see what he can offer...

i already want justin williams to stay, but im not sure which one to pick from admunson or woods...

i want amundson for his hustle and he may turn out to be a najera/madsen type of player, but he had being sloppy in the past two game... seems like he wants to show the coach his strengths, wich is pretty much his hustle on boards and on plays... seems really scared to hold the ball for even a second on offense...

woods on the other hand is like 7-2 and we could use his size since we have a pretty small team, with brad being the only other 7 footer...

Well, Woods would of been given those minutes. In 4 pre-season games, not even a total of 10 minutes. Like 7 or 8.

He's in Muss' dog-house right now. Can't really see him making it with us, and the possibility of him turning out to be something decent is just about gone. I would like to see what he can do as well, but it hasn't worked out for him so far.

As I partly said, Amundson has impressed all pre-season. Woods got a couple nice reviews before the games started, but nothing has been out there about him since this piece.

Gotta go with Amundson with the way things have gone. He's been playing hard and contributing when he's played enough. If Woods had been in the running with Amundson/Williams, it'd be a different situation.

amundson has impressed, but not ALL pre-season.. past two game have been pretty sloppy, but mabye thats just his game, how he hustles...

i do love his hustle and garbage man like play...

his strengths, to justify a spot on the roster, are certainly greater than woods...

must be some reason why mussleman gives woods little playing time...

mabye loren's not ready yet or mabye he doesnt fit his style of play... woods did mention trying to lose weight because he thought if he was heavier he would be more effective... turns out he plays better when he's lighter according to loren himself...

after all woods has only played a combined total of 5 mins, playing

2 mins vs DAL
3 mins vs LAL

the only reason i want him to stick around is the fact that he had got size... soo far thats all he's shown us, and that probably wont be enough...

Financially, I can see Pot making the team stricly because of his salary - might be a helpful bargaining chip for a trade. I think Woods may be gone, again, maybe again because of salary (non-guaranteed beyond training camp).

I think Hart is a goner with the development of Price.

I hope we keep 15 total.

I am really liking what I am seeing from Williams. He has the potential to be a really good role player in the league and he just happens to fill our needs. With a few more weight sessions and further development in his game he could be a Keon Clarke type player.

He is the one I would keep even if we are unlikely to see much of him this year but in year 2 onwards, he could be a very valuable member of the team. Ronnie Price has shown considerable improvement in 12 months. I am confident Justin can at least match that improvement if we keep him.

if pot is traded i wonder who would go for him and what we would get for him?...

probably a second round pick at best... most likely cash???

i just want him out...

Nobody wants Pot as a player. That is entirely not the point. But you can sometimes get significant players for a guy with an ender. Not that we would want him, but you could load up our expired guys and take aim at a guy like Steve Francis and have a real shot. That's Pot's value. Or rather his contract's value. Pot himself is irrelevant. I could be the player on the end of the contract for all a team trading for my contract would care.

You could box him up with Shareef.

The team could get something for SAR and if he's going to come off the bench we might as well move him and get something useful. The big problem with SAR is his contract is so low that we'll never get value, but we could use him with a scrub like Pot to unload that load.

Just an idea.

Package Pot and Douby together in a trade, and I'm sure we'd find a few takers.

We may not get more out of it than Pop Tarts and shiny things, but still...

I wouldn't get rid of Douby yet. Just for the name alone!

BUT -- you could trade SAR & Pot for Corey Blount and then pair up Blount & Douby and you'd officially have a cool lineup.
