Late night trade thought.

Was looking through the standings, and have noticed something familiar......

The Grizzlies are 2-7 and will probably be one of the bottom 4 in the West again this year. Pau Gasol is 27 years old, and has about 4-5 good years left in him.

The Kings could put together something special if we were to get him at mid season doing a three team trade including Chicago.

This will be a trade deadline trade when all three teams (well maybe not the Bulls) will be out of it. Plus Bibby will be back from injury.

Sacramento trades:
Ron Artest
Mike Bibby
Quincy Douby
SAR

Chicago trades:
Ben Gordon
Kirk Hinrich
2008 first round pick

Memphis trades:
Darko Milicic
Pau Gasol

Cash from either Sac/Chi

Sacramento does this to get a good shooting/distributing PG in Hinrich. Hinrich is young, and has many years left on his contract so there will be no risk of losing him soon or of him asking for an even more bloated contract. Gasol gives us teh PF we have been looking for. Shot blocking, rebounding big man who can score. He would compliment Hawes as he develops.

Sacramento does not do this because we are obligated to pay Gasol, and Hinrich if things don't work out for a VERY long time. Two of them make near 30 million a year. Where will the $$ come when it's time to pay Hawes/Garcia, and future picks?

My take is that the Kings will pretty much instantly become a good team. We would have Miller, Gasol, Salmons, Martin, and Hinrich starting. Hawes, Garcia will be the main two players off the bench with More and Williams able to give us some time.

Chicago does this because they get a decent defensive PF when paired w/ Wallace would wreak havoc inside the paint. Deng, and Artest would make Bibby's defensive shortcomings disappear. Deng would move to SG.

Memphis does this to shed Gasol's contract. the Griz are in a rebuild mode more so than the Kings right now. Gasol's contract might hold them back from signing their picks in a couple years. They have 2 first round picks in 2008, and they get a young SG to play some small ball with (seems to be a trend these days in the NBA). Douby is there to see if he works out, and SAR is probably going to get bought out with the cash offered. But Memphis is on the short end of the stick here, and has the worst of the trade. This is a salary shedder for them and nothing more.

OK... this is all done when I am half asleep. Anyone here have a good way to pry Gasol from Memphis to bring him here to play some PF?

Or at this point does it really matter? There really isn't a decent PF option in the draft this coming year that we would want if we had a top five pick. There are too many talented players to pick before a PF is an option. Would you want to take on Gasol's salary? What about Hinrich? I am obviously a fan of his, but I know many aren't so this idea will probably not be too popular.

I didn't even run the #s anyway, this is more of an idea than a valid trade anyway :)

Flame away! :D:D night!

Gasol doesn't help us at all. He's got a horrible contract and he's getting a whopping 6 RPG and 0.5 blocks per game. The guy is terrible.

Nothing a change of scenery would cure.

Reason I say this is because he has had no major injury since the end of last year to this year. Last season he had a ton of double doubles after coming back from the injury. I see no reason why he couldn't replicate that if he were a happy player.

I dont know why everyone is so eager to ship Artest out. I'd only trade him if something was on the table that really benefitted the team.

For the simple and very clear reason that every day he is on your team could be his last. Anything and everything you build with him as a core element could be torn down in an instant. Just ask Indiana. Just poof, and the house of cards collapses. And that threat will never go away. If you build your team for the future depending on Ron, it may be ok. But then again it may not. And you will never know, never be sure, and could lose everything you have been trying to do just like that. Its like marrying a guy who has cheated on every woman he has been with, in fact has cheated on your too. You can never never never be sure it isn't going to happen again. And wishful thinking doesn't cut it.

At the end of this season Ron could leave us. Or he could force us to offer him a big long term contract in order to keep him, one which we could be stuck with forever. Its not clear which is worse.

P.S. as an aside, any Gasol trade involving the Bulls pretty much has to end up with Pau in Chicago -- he's the piece they need, not more PGs and SFs.

Clear, concise and correct....

Here is a player that I think could benefit from a trade, I know he is hurt but the player I propose to trade him for is as well. Nene from Denver.

Nene/Filler pieces/1st Round Pick for Mike Bibby

A young PF who has shown flashes with Denver but nothing great but he is still young enough he could.

id be down for that... but im crazy in the head... i still like the idea of trading artest to the lakers for kwame.... if we did both we'd have brown and nene but we would have to somehow trade miller and waive either thomas or reef... because we'd have too mant bigs for the next 2+ years...

c-miller/hawes/brown/moore
pf-nene/thomas/reef/williams
sf-salmons/garcia
sg-martin/douby
pg-??/beno

but we would get crazy draft picks... i also dont think the nuggets would want bibby...

lol waive thomas/reef. that's not how it works. a buyout would need to be presented in order for them to leave the team. i don't want either nene or kwame. we'd do the lakers a HUGE favor by sending them a defensive stud to put next to kobe for lol kwame brown. why don't we send artest to the heat for jwill if we are looking for a ender. nene has a monster contract and a serious knee operation done. if they are wlling to take our junk bigmen for nene, i'm all for it.

I'd be interested in Salmons/Thomas for Kwame/Cook. Cashing out Salmons while the memory of him being a 20pt scorer is still fresh, and in the process getting rid of a bad contract in Thomas. Can even do a three way that ships Cook out with Reef to Orlando for picks and expirings. Show some restraint this summer, draft well, and let the team sink. Hopefully the summer of 2009 we get another good pick and have some capspace to sign a good FA.
