Last VSL Game: Kings vs Rockets

SS must have been told not to look for his shot the whole summer league. he is passing off on his wide open layups now. LOL

2 mins in game just called out. Now about 1.45 with a time out on the floor and Houston up 92-89. JT hacked underneath but not called.

Obviously, the Rockets have absolutely no answer for JT when he's in the game. It has been like that throughout a lot of this summer league. The only question is can he produce like this at the NBA regular season level. I think he can because he's so fundamentally sound and versatile.

Well the question at this point would probably be whether he can physically dominate like he has in summer league. The reason the question has to come up is because he has mostly played SF lately, I am sure he can dominate SF's at the NBA level, but what about PF's? He'll most like use his athletic skill against PF's which is different than how he's played in summer league. He could be a huge mismatch nightmare.

Hey all... Quick question.. If Bayless fell to the Kings would you have picked him?

No. But we probably would have anyway. I know Petrie wanted JT or he would not have selected him at #12. Thus, JT would be on the Warriors at this point.

hell yes, he's gonna be a BEAST!! just watch

I know Bayless just hit for 36 vs Suns but so what... And I'm not saying he's not a good player - maybe a future great NBA player. Is not JT in the same class of good, maybe headed to great. Bayless was traded on draft day because there were some question about just how great he might become.

Sean had a good game.. I would say that 3 of those TOs were not his fault.. He's definitely a keeper (although I would have like to trade up a bit and get Chalmers)

I wonder who is going to turn out better in the long run since they are so similar in size and talent - Sean Singletary or Aaron Brooks?

Summer League is weak competition, that's why we just saw Shelden Williams go 20 and 9. I think JT's going to have some adjusting and learning in his immediate future.

Yeah, he actually can play OFFENSE where Williams suffered.

Their per-minute stats were roughly the same, but they're very different sorts of players. Justin's a garbageman with no range, but kind of made up for it by shooting 80%. JT's a much better rounded player, which is to be expected when you're comparing a lottery pick to an undrafted guy. If he weren't better overall, people would be thinking that Geoff was in the wrong line of work.

I think you're jumping to conclusion too soon. Dont get me wrong, I like JT, but it's far from decided if he's going to be good/great in the NBA. Hell, based on summer league, the guy that's going to be a a superstar is Mareese Speights.

While I agree that summer league is a poor indication of future potential, Speights and Thompson look about dead even based on stats.

Speights: 33.0 mpg 14.0 fga 18.2 pts 10.2 Rebs

Thompson: 29.4 mpg 9.8 fga 16.2 pts 8.6 Rebs

Speights' had slightly better averages than Thompson, but also played more minutes and took more shots per game. The one area where Speights really stands out is BPG, where he has 2.2 to Thompson's .6. Other than that, however, they are more or less neck and neck.

I voted no simply because I think Bayless was about the same overall NBA talent as JT when it came time to pick at #12. Most mock drafts had Bayless as high as #4 and none I saw lower than #6 or #7. JT of course was around #20 or so in most. I don't put much stock in mock drafts anyway. Then Bayless falls and falls and falls to finally being selected at #11. Then he gets immediately traded to Portland. Meanwhile, Kings fans are wondering if we got jinxed yet again! Maybe many were salivating over the chance to grab Bayless at #12. I suppose Petrie thought he might select him, but the UofA kid is not exactly a pure PG - but without question a big scoring off guard. How many of those type players are on the Kings roster? Hmmm, Petrie probably said to himself when Bayless went one spot before the Kings picked. JT is there and he's very high on the Kings board and Golden State is almost sure to take him at #14. Done deal, go with Thompson. Only time will tell if it was jinx draft for the Kings or not.

Guys, lets wait for the regular season, and see how they play. JT did what he was susposed to do. He looked good against the competition of summer league. That doesn't make him a superstar, but its very encouraging. SS was bigger surprise. He's a second round pick and played like a first round pick. Is he Bayless? NO! But it wouldn't surprise me if he averages more assists in his career than Bayless does. Different type of players.

In answer to a previous question. Who would I pick if Bayless and Thompson are both available at 12. I would take Thompson, because the Kings have a greater need for a good bigman and rebounder. Number one rule of thumb. If you have to choose between a good big man and a good little man, you always take the good big man.

The last couple of games were fun games to watch. They had a little bit of everything in them. And, by the way, I finally saw JT use his jump hook tonight. He's very effective with it and I'm surprised he hasn't used it. Another encouraging thing, is that in the last two games he's guarded two high draft picks and played them very well. I can't say the same for them.

Yeah but you can see the way Shelden scores his points that it has alot more to do with the skills of his teamates setting him up than it does with him.

This is why in summer league its always better to watch for skillsets rather than stats. Still somewhat encouraging for Sheldon to show something this summer though.

Agreed.. You see Shelden go for 20/9, and Thompson 21/9 and realize that Thompson even at this point is light years ahead of Williams (and I am probably the biggest Williams fan here).

Also, Singletary is going to be in the league for a long time if he continues to show what he did in Summer League. He's actually a scorer, but showed that he can actualyl put the team ahead of himself. If he plays like this in the regular season he will be the first PG off the bench behind Beno. Being a 4 year college player helps as well for maturity.

Amen. And that is the key difference between Williams and Thompson. JT showed a variety of moves and ways to score and was very fluid and atthletic. He will need to adjust to a higher level of competition, but showed that he has the physical ability and basketball skillset to do so. Williams showed us what we already knew. He can grab rebounds and score on layups, put backs and the occasional 12-15 foot jump shot. He can defend beefy guys and box out. That's all he can do and will ever be with his mix of height, wing span and limited athleticism. JT showed he has the skill set to be a quality starter in the league, whereas Williams gave us another reminder his ceiling will be as a good role player off of the bench.
