Last 10 games...

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Was checking some stats for the grades thread. Stumbled upon these:

Last 10 Games DeMarcus Cousins (its been 10 now since the blowup/suspension):
33.0min 20.1pts (.480 .000 .808) 12.0reb 4.5ast 1.7stl 0.6blk

Last 10 Games Tyreke Evans:
26.9min 16.1pts (.523 .467 .778) 4.5reb 2.2ast 1.1stl 0.8blk

Now assuming you could convince fate, or the coach, to actually play the second player the minutes those numbers deserve, I think you could win with that production from those players

well the coach is an idiot. He enjoys finesse shooters more than power for some reason. same with GM.

Tyreke has been the real surprise. Where did this shooting stroke come from? I hope he's slowly improving and not just on a hot streak. He's shooting 33% from 3 on the year and that's with that god awful start where his jumper looked more like James Johnson's.

I'm glad to see Demarcus playing to his potential. He's been playing against rookies and soft defenders lately but he's supposed to be putting up numbers like that against bad teams. At least now he's not under performing. His shot selection has been better lately as well. More passing, less shooting and less forcing. Instead of getting tunnel vision as soon as he makes a move, he's been doing a better job of kicking the ball out instead of just going 1 on 1 and throwing up junk.

It comes from practice and a desire to improve.

A lot of posters around here have been uber-critical of Reke, complaining about his lack of heart or motivation. They've said he's lazy, they've questioned his basketball IQ, etc.

Tyreke Evans has continued to improve despite some hurdles that have been thrown in his way. He played almost a whole year as an experimental small forward, an experiment most agree was at the very least ill-advised. He's worked on his jumper and the results of all that work are becoming evident.

Imagine how good he and DFC would be doing if they had something even remotely resembling continuity and a strongly defined coaching philosophy in the mix.

Considering all the notes flying back and forth last year about how easy it should be for Tyreke to develop a good jump shot, I'm surprised people are wondering where it came from. Remember in the last month, he has had nothing else to do but shoot.

Not only does his shot look better, but his selection of shots is better too. His jump shot is not at the level where he can step up to the 3pt line with a man in front of him and knock it down consistently. He takes the shot when it is given to him which is usually when he is wide open on kick-outs. I'm very happy with the progression on his jump shot so far. Once he gets spot shooting down, it would be very beneficial for him to work on pullup jumpers off the dribble while he has a man in front of him. If he is able to add spot shooting and pullup jumpers to his repertoire (along with a floater), he is going to be an incredible player in this league. Let me repeat that. He is going to be an incredible player. His defense, size, length, athleticism, ball-handling, finishing, post-game, rebounding, and play-making are all there. I'm not confident enough to say his spot shooting is there just yet, but it's getting close.

Keep working on your spot shooting Evans, and then begin to add a pullup jumper and a floater and you will be unstoppable. :D

Yeah, but I think most of this was really accomplished during the offseason. He started the first 4-5 games very shaky, but that turned out to just be a slump/head thing. Before his injury he was already knocking down a lot of jumpers. Now he's just picked it up afterward. That's beginning to look like permanence.

I may have mentioned this before too, but people have missed something else in all the normal anti Reke nonsense: after the All Star Break last year Reke shot .494. So far this season he's shooting .468. That means that its approaching the last calendar year that Reke has shot a combined .481 combined from the field, despite constant positions changes, injuries, starting, coming of he bench etc. That would put right up there amongst the best FG%s of any guard.

I am hoping somebody starts noticing these things before some idiot blows up the team just when it may be coming to fruition.

One more thing on Evans - Last night in crunch time, at about the 3 minute mark, Smart went with Evans at the point with Thornton, Salmons, Thompson, and Cousins. More of that, please.

Particularly if you are going to run the halfcourt late game offense through Cousins, which we SHOULD do, it makes having a guy like IT on the court a lot less important. Have Evans run the open court offense, Cousins run the half court stuff.

I still think it's important to have a guy like IT on the court. I just feel the offense is safer with both him and Cousins on the floor late. Surprisingly, Salmons has surpassed Thornton as the late game partner to pair with the main two guys. Thornton can hit big shots, but he's still adjusting to the team offense concept and is still the guy who leaves his man on defense for no reason.

Sounds good if you can get it to work for three minutes. Of course with that lineup you probably have a better option by using Salmons to bring up the ball.

Minutes aren't really accurate for Reke. He's spent the last 4 games coming back from his injury and he had that 10 minute game against Denver. The previous 8 games before Denver, when he started playing good basketball again, was at 32 minutes per game. Still a few minutes short probably, but much closer to the minutes Smart would play a fully healthy Reke.

More likely our FO idiots dont even get a chance to do the wrong thing, pretty sure that Tyreke getting away from this franchise and its parade of brainless coaches is in the "blueprint".

We likely retain Reke for 1 more year as he is a restricted and with new owners and hopefully new coach we might have a good chance of making noise next year and resigning him again. We have to win next year to keep both Reke and Cousins.

I agree with the comments about Evans and his improvement. At this rate he could be the 2 guard this team needs. Being able to hit his shot changes the offense a lot for the better. He is strong and can play defense. He can rebound. The one knock on him is that he takes plays off. He gets winded doing spectacular things and then disappears for awhile, especially on offense which is the right time to rest. He probably needs to play less mnutes than some players.

I didnt know that! Awesome news...I really need to spend 3 minutes on looking up contracts before I start talking out my butt. New owners, new team identity is key. The Magoofs being on the way out changes everything.

On topic: Big Cuz is now up to 50% from the field in January! A milestone of epic proportions! After last nights game hes at 21.7/12.9/3.9 for January....So pretty much 22/13/4.
As for Tyreke....In January, he's averaging under 15ppg (in about 27 minutes), but he is shooting a nutty 56% from the field.
