KT for Jason Collins???

with the nets 1st round pick josh boone out until the middle of the season... the nets are in a desperate need of a starting power forward... nenad kristic or jason collins played out of postion at power forward most of the season... with kristic firmly in as the center of the future for the nets, jason collins becomes expandable...

how about KT for Jason Collins... win-win for both teams... nets get KT who has been a double-double player in the east... the kings get a reliable backup center and a better and shorter contract in return... kings will need to resign bonzi to 5 yrs/39mil contract....

the nets would start:

SF R. Jefferson
C Kristic
SG V. Carter
PG J. Kidd

the kings would be deep:

PF SAR / Amundson / J. Williams
SF Artest / Garcia
C Miller / Collins / Potopenko

I'm down for that. Not the best option for KT, but if we can't do KT for Magloire or Etan, I'll take Collins. One of the best post-defenders in the league. He also has a decent jumpshot.

Not sure Amundson would be the back-up PF though.

I'd go for it. Talked about it before, and like Collins as a solid post defender. Not a tremendous difference maker or shotblocker, but at least doesn't hurt us.

You know, I have next to no use for Jason Collins. He is kind of the ultimate big nothing -- doesn't score, rebound, pass, or block shots. Not sure if he even has a pulse. These were his numbers last year:

Just nothing. A waste of court space. Hell, a waste of gatorade when he hits the sideline. A 7 footer who rebounds like Reef on estrogen, shoots 40%, and might block a single shot every other game for you.

Now that said, his one calling card, such as it might be, is that he is a strong post defender. Not an interior intimidator/shotblocker, but a guy who will stand in there against strong post players and make it tough on them. (of course I always have to ask when you put up completely pathetic numbers like he does just how good does your defense have to be to justify your otherwise completely unproductive minutes on the floor?). As such, you could CONSIDER this deal. Maybe. But think about it: you'd be intentionally taking on a 6million dollar a year contract for a 5pt 5reb big man (and we worry about Bonzi getting $8mil?). And his own deal still runs 3 years, so not as if you get to escape it anytime soon. Would he even play? If the answer was yes, would that actually be a good thing?

Well, other than an average jumpshot, his main deal is post-defense like everyone has said. He's not a leaper or an athlete, not a scorer, but will battle and defend guys down low well and take a ton of charges.

KT and him are pretty much opposites.

I'd prefer we go after other guys for KT first though.

KT has 4 years/ $31 mil left on his contract

Collins has 3 years / $18 mil left on his contract

thats a savings of almost 13 million and 1 less year on the salary cap... true i would prefer magloire, but it doesn't seem like there is any movement on that trade front...

plus collins is a good post defender and he does all the little things like setting solid picks for v. carter and jefferson in new jersey....

I think it's getting border-line ridiculous the trades that are being thrown out here...I know his contract is bad, but based on that alone it seems that everyone has been brain-washed at what the guy can actually contribute to the team.

He can average a double-double.
He plays with energy.
He shoots a high percentage.
He rebounds.
He's a near-perfect, role-playing compliment to Ron Artest and co.

Sure, there's the undersized and attitude that comes with him, but Im willing to put up with that.

And Im know Im willing to take the double-doubles that come with Kenny Thomas, rather than empty minutes with some low-post defense or some other role-play trait that comes with whoever else is being considered for K9.

I'd do it. He was the reason the Nets started playing really good defense and went on the huge run near the end of the season. Plays VERY good post D, takes up space, boxes out, makes sure his teammates get rebounds by tipping them, sets good picks, basically if you watch a lot of NJ like I do you see that he does all the little things that help a team win. Not only that, a year less on the contract and he makes less so like the ockingsfan mentioned you save 13 million dollars.

Agreed, BMiller, I've seen a bunch of him with the Nets the last 2-3 seasons.

Against Shaq that was all he was ever good for. I don't know why people think he is a solid post defender, i haven't seen him do anything besides take charges.

Jason Collins is a good one-dimensional post defender, but there really aren't that many centers who play in the post so his usefulness is extremely limited. Jason Collins is a great guy to send against out against Shaq and... that's about it. He's not worth Kenny Thomas without somehting else added to the deal.

Maybe that's all you've seen recently? I've watched the guy for the last 2-3 seasons (since I get the Nets games up here in the NY area on the regional sports network, YES) and he does more than just take charges on his post-defense. Obviously against Shaq, most guys are going to get bounced around, and he's better at most defending Shaq and knows how take charges on him. Also, he can defend him (or others) by bodying up on him and using his arms to contest shots, making him take shots the way he didn't want to or not exactly the shot he wanted to take because of Collins defense. He does both of those in general, as well, just more charges vs. Shaq.

The guy is not "weak". Collins played PF for the Nets since Kenyon Martin left, and has been fine.

Big post-defender/hustle guy for the Nets. 7' 255. His numbers aren't even solid, but what his effective game is doesn't show up in the stat sheet. Not a leaper or much of an "athete". His offense is an average j, and hustle stuff around the basket.

To quote Brickie, roleplayers on championship teams are often defensive role players. Sure it would be nice to have one that at least addds some shotblocking or rebounding too, but at least it's a better start to have a one-dimensional defender in the post than a one-dimensional shooter.
