Kingfans Scouting Report #1:
Kawhi Leonard: 6'7", 227 pound, SF. I'll start by saying that I think the Kings are very high on Leonard. And I think he would be a good fit for the team. As well as being talented, he brings a lot of intangibles. He's a terrific competitor with a motor that never quits. He's a winner along with being a quiet leader. Most of all, he's a team player, that will do whatever is asked of him. Along with Fredette, he's another player that I got to see a lot this past season, and on three occasions, I got to see them play against one another, with Fredette winning two of the three battles.
Talent wise, Leonard brings a lot to the table. He's a very good defender, and while he played mainly PF for San Diego St., he also guarded SF's and on occasion SG's. He's an outstanding rebounder for his position, and just seems to have a nose for the ball. One of the things that seems to get overlooked in discussions about Leonard are his ballhandling and passing abilities. He handles the ball very well, and is capable of taking players off the dribble, as well as passing off penetration. I'm not saying there's no room for improvement in these areas, I'm just saying he's lot better than most people give him credit for.
The one burning question about Leonard is his ability to score from the outside. Reasonable, since he did almost all of his scoring from within 12 feet of the basket. By all accounts he's been working hard on his jumpshot since the college season ended, and most reports say he's looked good shooting the ball in workouts. Thats certainly a good start in the right direction, but shooting the ball in a workout and shooting it in a game are two different things. So one can only judge him on what your know, and what you see. Everything else is speculation based on potential. What we know, is that he's a very hard worker, and history tells us that talented players that work hard tend to succeed. So I wouldn't bet against him becoming a good enough shooter to demand respect.
I can see the Kings taking him at 7. He would fill a need, and I think he could be a starter by mid-season at the latest. Lets be honest! He has the ability to be a better defender than Donte, and he has the heart and desire that Casspi displays. He's a better rebounder than either of them from day one. It wouldn't take much to be a better outside shooter than Donte, who shot under 30% from the three last season, and I think eventually he would be a much better all around scorer than Casspi. He already has a mid-range game that Casspi lacks.
I'm by no means saying that the Kings should draft Leonard. I'm just saying that it wouldn't surprise me if they did. And, it wouldn't surprise me if he's off the board by the time they pick.
