[Game] Kings vs Bulls, 12/29/11 Game Thread

On the brightside Tyreke was our best guard tonight. On the downside, he was our best only because our other two guards were absolutely terrible.

The Growing pains of a young team....

this was an elite defensive bulls team that is vastly superior than ours, a contender even. our youth has not yet realized to take opportunities when they arise, like when early in the quarter the other team was in the penalty, that was the perfect opportunity to push it. tyreke's slow jog on the offense wastes time in the shot clock, we really need to up the tempo on the offense. doesnt mean we run and gun just push it deep get some backdoor cuts etc. the ball HAS TO MOVE. not from right hand to left :))

jimmer wasnt horrible. it's hard for anyone to stay with rose. when he was put on korver, they couldnt take advantage of his suspect defense. my main gripe about jimmer in this game was driving then stopping in traffic. if nothing is there, dont pick up your dribble amongst the trees, just dribble back out

uh no

He wasn't as bad as Thornton. Marcus needs to shut up about more shots and play with the team.

But Reke was still a self-destructing member of the team. Hurting offensive possessions and blowing fastbreaks. He had some good defensive plays, but overall, I think Jimmer contributed more despite his rookie flubs. Hell, Jimmer's rookie flub on the shotclock violation was initiated by Reke wasting shotclcok at the top of the key. Jimmer jumped out to receive the pass on that play and Reke wasn't even looking for him or anyone.

the most selfish team i have ever seen. Tryreke, Cousins and Thorntons offense tonight was basically get the ball, clear out, zone everyone else out. Jimmer at least has the sense to look for his shot first, but still look for open players. This team has a long way to go. Transition defense is terrible, mainly because our shot selection is terrible. When we are actually set on defense, we play good d. Why is outlaw getting minutes? He obviously has no confidence on his shot right now, why isn't Garcia or Donte getting any pt at the sg and sf?

Also its embarassing how bad this team sucks at freethrows. If they don't improve on that, it will cost us dozens of wins this season.

Sucks that they lost but it was not a bad game. The Kings made several runs and made the Bulls earn the win. The Kings had their chances and just lost to the better team. Nothing to be too disappointed with in that.

What really frustrates and perplexes me is how the entire team can simultaneously suck at shooting free throws.

And why the heck can’t anyone make a lay up or a shot two feet from he basket?

All in all though I see enough positives to indicate that this will be a good team eventually.

It's encouraging that in spite of the fact that Jimmer is shooting a terrible percentage on threes he's still finding ways to help the team. He's just a good all around basketball player with a good basketball IQ.

I'd like to agree with but no. We can't make excuses okc as an example. Really think we need a new coach. Our offense is so easy to read. And our coach don't hold this team accountable. I have seen stretches when we collapse on defense and no time out is called. We need a better coach period!

Transition defense was terrible. I knew going into the season size would be a disadvantage to the team, but it's like a layup drill against this team.

Indeed. Gave one of the best teams in the league a good run with the 2nd youngest team in the league.

Did we watch the same game? I thought the negatives far outweighed any positives.

1)The Kings should have had that game with all the foul trouble the Bulls were in. They aren't going to get a better opportunity.

2) The most selfish "me first" attitude that I have ever seen. As much as I like Thornton, if he and Reke can't get it into their skulls that it's a team game, chop and shop them for players who can. That 3v1 play by Reke was disgusting, and he should have turned it over because he traveled.

3) Westfail is an idiot. He either needs to be assertive and be coaching his team, or go. The Bulls coach was on his feet commanding the game the entire way through even when they were up by ten. I only remember a couple times I EVER saw Adelman sitting down on the bench on game time.

4) I'm sick of the "growing pains of a young team excuse". When the hell does that grow old? We've been using it for several years now.

Our halfcourt offense is basically dribble up the court A) Pass it to Cousins in the low/high post, clear out and see if he makes a good play or a bad play. B) Give it to Chuck in the high post, set some lazy screens for either Thornton and Tyreke, isolation. These team doesn't know the concept of pass and move, because they know if they pass it, theres is a 95% chance they will not get it back. Jimmer seems to be the only one that fundametaly understands the game.

There is talent here

The team will get better the coaches rotations were even better, its almost like the home game tonight was more important than the portland game. Unfortunately i think its safe to say that Chicago is better than the Lake show at this point in the season. We have nowhere to go but up!

Thats the problem. We have LOADS of talent and depth. But it isn't working and hasn't worked for the last few years. Thats what makes this so frustrating.

I mean, the old Kings had BALL MOVEMENT. I mean, shifting players, constantly, rotating. Rotate one wing, then the other. Move the ball around. Get people open.

Passing Skills

Athleticism

PASSING.

See, if Tyreke was in Hedo's place in that last vid, he would have gone straight for the layup or dunk like a fool.

Also, obligatory gamewinning hand off from Divac going into the basket. Hey Westfail, if you see this, this is what happens when you have designed plays.

Yes, we watched the same game. I don't know it's so hard for folks to understand this but X and Y can both experience T and come away with different impressions, evaluations, perspective, etc. It's not the case that everyone watching the same game must arrive at the same conclusions. My conclusion was that the Kings took a game that looked like a blowout early and turned it into a competitive game that they had a real chance of winning. A bad team would have gotten crushed by the Bulls tonight. The Kings are not a bad team. They have some things to fix before they'll be a good team, but they aren't a bad team. They're a team in transition and they aren't going to become elite overnight.

Lol, no offense at the phrasing of the question. I usually mean that rhetorically. I know people can have different opinions of the same game.

But how long do we call them a "team in transition"? Personally I think the "transition window" has just about closed.

The Kings are a bad team. If you have any rational or objective bone in your body, you can see they are bad. Even if they make more of their FTs tonight, you know they would botch late game possessions and lose the game.

Also, at least the disaster is getting some national attention:

Sacramento needs to change its name this year to the Sacramento Black Holes. Every Kings assist is an accident. Strangely fun to watch.

The game wasn't as close as the scoreboard indicated. Whenever the kings got close. Everytime the kings got close, i would blink my eyes and the lead would be back to double digits. This team would be competitive if players or coaches understood the concept of transition defense. How many uncontested layups do they need to give up before someone figures out they should get back on defense?

Ah, Swisshh, I wish I could take that speech bubble and make it my sig, but I don't know how, haha :(

Actually, I just did. If it's ok with you, I might yoink that.

We're still having trouble transitioning into defense. Bulls had a couple easy fast break points.

Also need to learn to play the fast break better. I remember 2 instances where Thornton and Tyreke were in a 2on1 fast break, and both decided to not pass and instead forced their own lay up. It went in, but its still not smart basketball. Another time, Reke has the ball in a 3on1 fastbreak with Thornton to his left and Jimmer to his right. Decides to force a fancy lay up that led to being fouled. Ended up missing both his free throws.

I think 33 points on FB. I don't know what's going on in his head. If you're missing freethrows, you want to score the points, pass the ball, don't get sent to the line where you can't make FT. And you know it's bad when Grant and Jerry can't spin it to make it sound good (the transition D).

I understand where you're coming from, trust me. But the simple fact is that when your best players are 21, 22, 22, and 24 years old, things are going to get ugly quite often unless you happen to be lucky enough to have a LeBron/Durant/Howard caliber player. The Kings don't have a player of that caliber and all of their veterans are role players. Basically at this point there's nothing you can do but wait for the Evans, Cousins, Thornton/Jimmer core to develop and mature. Those are the guys the team put their hopes for the future in and so far they've played only 3 NBA games together.

I know people want the break through to come this year but it just isn’t a realistic expectation. This year we should be looking for growth, competitiveness, etc. If that’s not happening after they get a few months into the season, then there’s cause for real concern. But if it is happening by then, then it’s a sign that things are progressing and that this team will be a playoff team in the future.

That all depends on your perspective. i'd say that it was closer than the score indicated. Watching the game I really had the feeling that at any time the Kings were going to make the run to take the lead. They came close a few times and within a point once. With better transition defense and FT shooting they probably win this game. I can accept that because those things are correctable.
