Kings Team Stats (through 9 games)
OFFENSIVE STATS
Scoring: 100.4pts (8th)
Own FG%: .436 (18th)
Own 3pt%: .313 (25th)
Own FT%: .803 (4th)
Turnovers: 12.7 (1st)
Analysis: so, despite our early ugliness, the offense is coming on line. A team with Peja Stojakovic, Mike Bibby, Bobby Jackson cannot hit a three to save its life. On the other hand, we are being very efficient hitting our FTs (even Webb) and protecting the ball -- fewest turnovers in the league. Combined with the fairly fast pace we play at, that means we are getting extra possessions (key given that we are also 25th in offensive rebounding) and making the most of them despite our middling FG%.
DEFENSIVE STATS
Pts Against: 102.6 (29th)
Opp FG%: .443 (17th)
Opp 3pt%: .401 (25th)
Opp TO: 14.7 (17th)
Rebounding%: .467 (29th); Off: .271 (25th); Def: .656 (30th)
Analysis: As expected/known, the Kings are second to last in the league in points against, and second to last in the league in rebounding %. Only Washington is worse on scoring defense, and only Atlanta is worse on the boards. And those are not good teams. However, looking a little deeper, the Kings are actually a middling team in Opp FG% -- nothing great, but not terrible either (we are bad at defending opposition three pointers -- a couple of years ago we were #1 in the league in that category, but the perimiter guys are not getting it done this year). And we are also a middling team at forcing opponent turnovers. Thus you would expect us to be a middling team in pts against. But two factors holding us back 1) somewhat faster apce means we will always have a slightly elevatged pts against and 2) we are the WORST defesnvie rebioudning team in the league. We are not taking care of our defensive glass, and so opposing teams are getting multiple shots at the hoop every time down the floor. We are ok at stopping the first shot, but if they get 2 or 3, the eventually score.
