Kings sign first-round pick to contract

Draft picks are slotted for a certain pay, unlike other sports. Is that what confused you? Either way, he's on the cheap, relatively speaking.

That's definitely on the low side for a lotto pick. I suppose reaching for a late first round guy does have it's advantages.

Its all pretty much on a scale anymore. That's just what you pay 12th round picks. If it was Eric Gordon, it would be a very similar contract. The 13th pick will get paid a bit less. The 14th a bit less still.

One down. Two to go. Their first summer league game in 4 days.

No doubt! Cant wait for the summer league games! BTW, doesnt this contract look so much better than looking at NFL rookie contracts. I am willing to bet Matt Ryan is going to be a huge bust (chances are against QBs picked in top 5) and look at all of that guarenteed money he is getting. Gotta love how the NBA is making young players earn their contracts. Well, I guess better earning them than NFL players, where they hand out bigger contracts for rookies than 5 time pro bowlers. LOL

That's kind of important in the NBA, since, unlike most sports, it's quite possible for an NBA player to sign a $100M contract and immediately decide that playing ball is boring and that he's just going to go through the motions. Or utterly fail for a number of other reasons. In most sports, that'd get you fired, but it can't in the NBA. So NBA franchises really NEED to know that a player's got the talent and motivation to make it. Nobody wants to watch a bunch of Olowokandis.

Don't rookies usually get the first 3-4 years, then an option year?
I guess it doesn't really matter much, it just seems a little short for a # 12 pick.

The two year and then team option year became standard procedure a couple of years back. Previously it had been three years and one option year.

I really can't find anything on the subject, but Grant, Mike and Jason Ross on 1140 repeatedly reported that the Kings signed Singletary and Ewing as well. If someone can dig up the terms (who has more time than I do), that would be awesome :)

How bad would it be if the nba had the same structure as the nfl. Imagine, Kwame Brown getting 5 years 70 million. 30 million guaranteed. Same for candy man. Darko getting 5 years 58 million. 20 million guaranteed.

Nothing will ever top Sean Bradley 7'6 center drafted by the 7sixers and signed a 7 year 76 million dollar deal, fantastic!

Although the NFL is way out of line when it comes to rookie salaries, there is one distinct difference, and the main one, as far as the NBA being more frugal about they're starting salaries. The NBA contracts are guaranteed and the NFL contracts aren't. The only thing guaranteed in the NFL are the bonuses.

So you might sign a 25 million 3 year contract in the NFL, and it might look good on paper, but if they cut you after the first year, you've got nothing but what you've earned up to that point. Thats why so many players go for the big signing bonuses.
