Now the flipside -- unless Hawes SIGNIFICANTLY improves on defense/the glass, young or not we are going to spend his entire stay in Sacto trying to cover for those very pronounced weaknesses. Will absolutely need some 10+ rebound PF, shotblockers, all kinds of pieces just to make him viable unless he really picks it up.

What athletic big man was left with his kind of skills? Seems to me every team to win an NBA championship has had a quality skilled big man...of which Spencer Hawes can be in a couple of years. Frankly, I'm tired of athletic SG's and Sf's being drafted year after year. Finally Petrie picks a skilled big man in the draft and can be a very good player in a couple of years and people are hammering him. His game resembles Vlade's. Would anyone not want Vlade in his prime back? I mean he's 7'1" and he can play.
I don't think he is Vlade. Why you're comparing them?

It is obvious we didn't draft our exact need - athletic big with rebounding and shotblocking. Our other options were Julian Wright and Al Thornton. I think Julian Wright would have been a better fit for out team, but one thing I won't do, is dog any draft picks that we make. Although we don't always draft for need, we have been making quality draft picks. So I think Hawes will work out just fine.
Thank you. Both players are good but we dont need either one of those players. Francisco, Artest, Salmons...Why would we take a duplication of players we already have?

Jason Smith.

there's still hope. Miami took Jason Smith. maybe we'll get lucky and Geoff will trade for him

i still believe in Petrie. i think many of us might be eating our words in a few years. as a rebuilding team, Hawes might be a damn good developing center. he's no Oden, but we had no shot at him since Muss couldn't suck enough to make us lose a few more games

lets just wait it out and see

which just might happen with Hawes at Center and JWillx2 at PF

You know what, before the Kings drafted Spencer Hawes we were all Kings fans right? Some people like the pick, some people don't--but we're still all Kings fans. It's not like the ones who are happy with Hawes are the "good fans" and the rest of as are malcontents. We all knew who the players were before the draft, we all had favorites and guys we hoped the Kings would avoid. Am I supposed to just pretend I'm happy that the Kings made possibly the worst decision they could have made with their pick from my point of view?

My personal feeling is that a player like Spencer Hawes is not good for this franchise. He's one of the worst athletes in the draft, he has average size for a center with short arms, and he's not likely to ever be a dominant defender. Basically this means that all of the problems we've had in our frontcourt for the past 5 years have been extended for another 5 years, at least. I'm fine with the Kings drafting a project, I'm not fine with the Kings drafting a project who's never going to rebound well or defend his position well at a position where rebounding and defense are vitally important. You've just locked yourself into another defensive liability at a key position. Why would you do that if you're trying to build a team that plays defense?

But, how many "back to the basket" Centers are in the NBA anymore?? Hawes will be going up against Oden/Stoudemire, etc... for the next 4-5 years??

It's a little easier when you are 7 feet in college to score but when you can't jump real well(in this day and age) will you be able to do this in the NBA???

I don't think he is Vlade. I think a trade could be in the works too. Even the announcers were saying it was likely Smith was drafte for someone else. I wonder if Wright, Williams and Smith for Artest is going to be announced at somepoint.

[Edit] Ok, he was just traded to Philly, slowly doucing my words in soy sauce and preparing to eat them.

He's not a good rebounder, unlike Vlade. He's not a good shotblocker, unlike Vlade. He's not strong, unlike Vlade. He doesn't have wide shoulders, unlike Vlade. He's going to have to face Oden, Amare Stoudamire, Yi Jianlian, unlike Vlade.

I do not like or dislike this pick. I think that we did the best we could at his spot. What I HATE is all the hatred/venom being spewed at this kid. So far he has been called everything from a loser to a bust to things thant had to be editted out. People have said that they hope he is booed and the team is doomed because of this pick. As a loyal Kings fan for years, I am dishearted and even sort of sicked by how low we have sunk as fans. I really do not care who like oe dislikes the pick. I just always loved that we did not let that spill over to the player on a personal level. We ARE all fans whether we like the PICK or not. I just wish we still acted like fans. We can argue the pick WITHOUT slamming the kid before he even has a chance to play.

He was just on with Grant and Mike

Says during the workouts he shot ball well showed some athleticism that he’s knocked for.

The talk about his athleticism (or lack thereof) bothers and motivates him and he thinks its untrue to a certain degree

If you watch him play, the way he plays….he's thinks he more than athletic to get the job done

His strengths he says are: Offense, back to basket scoring, good shooter, passer

Things to work on: rebounding, timing and blocking shots

On if he's NBA ready? Yes, he thinks so. He thinks he has a good oportunity to contribute right away, will work hard to prepare himself

Played guard to the 9th grade, his uncle and family stressed fundamentals

On the Kings: The Fans. Its one of the things he knows about the organization. Has heard its like a college atmosphere and can’t wait to play here

Deep draft, pretty high pick, yet we pass up on Julian Wright and draft basically a young Brad Miller. Can't rebound, doesn't defend, doesn't block shots...ummmmm Petrie better know something about this guy that we don't.
sad thing is hawes is just like Miller as of right NOW. Maybe a bit quicker because hes 19, but that is IT.
Brad was actually good when he was in Indiana and the first two years in Sacramento. Then the foot problems struck.

I think he;s clever enough to score int eh NBA -- he has a LOT of moves.

But clever doesn;t help you on defense or the glass when guys with twice your strength and athleticsm run right around and through you.

Yeah, Miller's low-post game is definitely his strength. They are nearly twins.

My prediction: Spencer Hawes will be the most posterized man in the NBA over the next 10 years...

Also oppositions offensive rebounds per game may be higher than our total rebounds per game next year.
Agree...

The Kings lack rebounding so we draft a 7 footer who grabbed 6 a game in 30 minutes lol.. What a crock of crap.. Why draft a 7 footer who can't rebound??

The Kings lack big men so people here propose moving Brad to PF and starting Hawesw at C? LOLLOLOL We would have the most unathletic, slowest, poorest reboundingPF/C combo EVER.. Wow... This guy solved none of our needs..:mad:

I would have rather taken another SF than a stiff that gives us nothing.

That is the question. If in 2 years he hasnt' shown the ability to rebound or defend (at the very least as a position defender), then we might have another Eddy Curry on our hands.

Huh? Seems a bit too early to proclaim a lot of this. He's not strong like Vlade or a good rebounder? He's 19. He was a college freshman and he has a frame that will fill out. Obviously he needs to hit the weight room, but they have said that about every freshman drafted with the possible exception of Oden.

As to who he is going to have to face, Vlade faced Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson, Garnett and Duncan in their primes. I would rather face Yi or Amare over those guys any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

That's a good comparison actually -- had not thought of that one. Hopefully not as lazy of course, but then again not blessed with earthmover size.

there are still a few other good bigs out there thatd id love to see us nab
splitter, gasol and that fasenko guy.
along with the chinese PG i dont think ( i dont hope either ) that the night is over for the kings

right, he adds nothing. pathetic, get your head out of your butt and get over your hatred for Hawes and get real.

The more I learn about Hawes, the more I'm beginning to warm up to the idea of drafting him. Not only was he the most offensively skilled big man in the draft, but after listening to his interview with Grant on 1140, the kid's sharp as a tac, is willing to work very hard, and understands he needs to work on his rebounding. All in all, when it's all said and done, I think 2 years from now the 19 yr old Hawes will be our new starting center, averaging about 16/10/1.5, and will be a cornerstone to our revitalized franchised for years to come. Skilled and intelligent big men are really hard to come by these days, and those two traits are essential when drafting big guys.
