Kings draft Spencer Hawes: Discussion

He was productive as a rebounders just not as good as a guy his size should be. This line you keep spewing about name one college big man that was a bad rebounders blah blah... there are plenty of 19 years old prospects that have gone from average rebounders, which is what he is, and developed into considerably better rebounders. He gets good position and blocks out well which with the addition of strength will allow him to be a good defender at the center position. Now i have a question for you, you call him a horrible rebounder but have you ever seen this kid play? Tell me what is stopping him from ever developing into a good rebounder?
Brandon Wright averaged 6.2 RPG. Hard to say he'll never be a great rebounder either.

Look 3-4 years down the line when we are back in the playoffs:

Spencer Hawes - Low Post Scorer - CHECK
Kevin Martin - Anywhere Scorer - CHECK
Francisco Garcia - Slightly Schitzo Energy Defender/Perimeter Threat - CHECK

????????? - Lockdown Defense/Offensive Distributor PG - PENDING
????????? - Athletic Freak Rebounder Shotblocker PF - PENDING
Being extremely optimistic, for a change:

Hawes
Justin Williams
Garica
Martin
Darren Collison (pick next year)

Fits your criteria. Think we're going to have to get another big man defender too. Hawes AND Noah would have been a nice pair. But there's still time. He was clearly the best pick left for us out there, IMO. If there's any faulting Petrie it's not making a move last year to put us in a position with a higher pick this year.

Al Thornton and Julian Wright would have been great picks for us. Long, athletic guys who can play defense. It's like last year all over again. Better players were still available. It's hard to be a fan of a team which obviously has a different philosophy about which players to acquire than you do. If we had the same roster we had now plus Rajon Rondo instead of Douby and Al Thornton instead of Spencer Hawes, I would be thrilled. Unless I turn off my brain and commit to cheering on whoever's wearing a Kings jersey just because they're in a Kings jersey, I don't know if I can still be a fan of this team. I can think of a half dozen teams I'd rather watch right now than the Kings. Why should I care abotu Sacramento anymore? I don't even live there anymore.

This is why this draft pick really makes me mad. It's like my team has been taken away from me. Maybe you longtime fans think that's funny. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I don't know how you do it. I don't know how you can commit to a team regardless of what they do. I have to go out of my way to watch the Kings right now anyway. Why should I even bother? I've never been a fairweather fan, but I think this is different. It's not about whether they win or lose--I don't like the philosophy, I don't like the way they play, and there's nothing I can do about it. I need a reason to cheer for somebody.
good riddance.

Spencer on offense, Justin on defense, looks pretty good to me. :p

Wow, I think this is a pretty good pick. I am actually a bit surprised the Bulls passed on him. 7 footers that can play inside and out are rare. I am really surprised at how this board has completely turned into a black hole pessimism lately. I understand but still really surprised.

WOW alot of ppl leaving the kings as fans because of Hawes? I suspect they are just venting a little or they wouldn't be around after taking Douby last year. I have yet to see a reason for Douby to be on this team.

I don't think many of them will actually leave. After all, Kingsgurl and I threatened to leave - or throw ourselves off the Tower Bridge - when Webber was traded and we're still here.

People are just venting. If they find they cannot be Kings fans any longer, however, that's their choice.

Yeah, it's kind of surprising that the Bulls passed on Hawes considered "inside offense" is the 1 thing the Bulls need the most. But then again, Ben Wallace is on the decline and Noah would be perfect to fit his spot I think.

Coming off the bench, yes..

OR starting for a 25 win team like the Kings are about to become... For 15 years straight again..

What is your problem. Are you saying that if we draft Jason Smith we are instant playoff contenders. Jason Smith come on

Try this on for size.

Jason Smith freshman year 10.5 pts 5.8 reb 1.4 blks 1.7 ast 55% fg 25% ft

Spencer Hawes freshman year 14.9 pts 6.4reb 1.7 blks 1.9ast 53% fg 75% ft

They already went through Eddie Curry once -- would not be surprised if it was a factor. Also perhaps a cautionary tale for us since he did look like the fit there, adn hey still ignored him. But we'll see.

VF you are like me this is the first player we have drafted over 6'8 in over 10 years.

Funny little take on Hawes.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/6967202?MSNHPHMA

Wednesday at the media session, Greg Oden was telling Corey Brewer and Rodney Stuckey a good little story. Apparently, a bunch of the Lottery guys went out in Times Square to get a quick bite on Tuesday night. Everyone was in shorts and tee shirts. Hawes showed up in a full suit. Ha! Can't wait till Ron Artest gets his hands on this guy. The Maloofs could have a fun little reality show on their hands.

While he seems like a nice enough kid, why did we pick him? Of all the possibles, I was praying he wasn't going to be Petrie's guy. Another slow, white guy with cement shoes. Damn.

Agreed, with everything. And as much as I love Justin Williams, I see him more as an impact player off the bench. Especially if we have a run-and-gun team.

It should be fun to watch Spencer play this year because we will have a team that can get out and run, but when we do get in the half-court set, we will have SAR and Hawes to mash it in. And now that I think about it, I'm not so for trading SAR just yet. Maybe he can help Hawes develop quicker.

And Justin is not a Center, unless if you are playing smallball, IMO.

do you REMEMBER the last player we drafted over 6-8?? hahahha. Drafting Bigs is not something we do welll here in sacramento...it just never works out here.... do i have to even say the name pervis...just the thought of it is painful enough

Exactly! As long as our draft is over 6'7", 6'8" I'm happy.

Edit: I guess the CHA/GS trade is a done deal. What was Bobcats thinking trading away a big man for J-Rich?

We had no choice it was Hawes or tweener PF's. We have those to spare. Hawes will play on offense then we will call timeouts or foul to get Justin Williams in on defense. It will be difficult to do but, Reggie Theus can pull it off. Hibbert should have stayed in the draft
For those that think Hawes is slow...,Hibbert is like a snail if you compare the two.

Well offense is his calling card because he has the best lowpost game of anyone in this draft along with range out to 20 feet and great passing ability. Oh ya that low 15 pgg is more then Oden, Noah, Hordford, or Wright averaged... the college game is a guards game big men don't put up huge offensive numbers.
My point is that if his low-post skill was really that impressive, I would expect it to manifest itself in something better than 15ppg on 53% shooting. 15 ppg is fine, I would just think he should score more efficiently than that if he's really that advanced. My guess is that his lack of athleticism prevents him from getting easy points off explosive plays aournd the rims (dunks, ORB, etc.). So the only way Hawes can even SURVIVE is by using an impressive display of moves.

BTW - I wouldn't pick those stats apart that much if he brought other things to the table, but he doesn't.

BTW2 - All the players you mentioned shot over 60% from the field. Except for maybe Horford they're all considered pretty raw offensively. How did they do it?....Athleticism and explosive plays around the rim.

I think the pick sucks, but I hope I'm wrong.

That's Bull..

Jason Smith.. 7'0 PF 15ppg 10rpg can block some shots, and is athletic for a big..

I would take 10 Jason Smiths before I ever drafted a Hawes.
If Jason Smith is SO darn good then why did he last until pick 20?! Surely all the other teams out there couldn't be as dumb as us to overlook him for 9 picks after ours

Played in a joke of a conference was far and away the best player on his team and put up numbers barely better the hawes. He plays in the 25th rank, his stats are a joke. Have you seen this guy? If not You sure have strong opinions about players you have never seen.
