Kings Cap Space Need, one view

The NBA daily news page today looked at the teams with the most cap space and had this view of the Kings:

Cap space: $19.2 million
Positional needs: SG, C
Statistical needs: Interior defense, shooting
With the fifth pick in the draft, the Kings have a chance to add a building block before they get to free agency. Sacramento isn't exactly a location draw, so this team may be best suited in going the same route as the Thunder. If they're patient and draft wisely, they can slowly build a winner.
Ideal fit: Anthony Morrow comes closest. The Warriors' guard is young and would complement Tyreke Evans in the backcourt, but he's restricted, so it would probably be difficult to pry him away from Golden State with a reasonably affordable offer sheet.

This seems to assume the Kings fill their big defender need via the draft, one way or the other. Hmmm....

I actually wouldnt mind the Morrow move, assuming we do something with some of our other players. If we traded Greene or Casspi in a move for someone like Al Jefferson. Morrow might be the best outside shooter in the league.

I read this article earlier today. I agree that Morrow would be a really good fit next to Tyreke and I can see Petrie making a run for him. But hopefully only if Cousins falls to us at 5. If not then I hope he takes Wesley Johnson, which would then make signing Morrow pointless.

I wouldn't mind Morrow. He's a very good 3pt shooter, and handles the ball OK. I wouldn't want to overpay for him, but for the right price, I'd be on board. All depends on what we do with our first pick.

I read this as well and I think, in a word, the Kings will do nothing. I think the prudent approach is to let the new collective bargaining agreement be implemented to see what the status of contracts is going to be (why sign someone to a 6 year deal if the new CBA limits the length of contracts to 4 years). It also makes sense because they have such a high pick in the draft and they should wait to see how all the pieces mesh before deciding what direction to take in free agency.

Our cap space is going no-where - according to hoopshype.com the team's committed salary for the 11/12 season is just nineteen million - and that's with no significant free agent of our own for that season (except for Spencer Hawes, who probably won't deserve more than a couple mil per season at that point). So the bottom line is, be patient, see how Tyreke develops, how the #5 pick in this year's draft develops, how Jason Thompson develops and how they all mesh together and then have the room to sign most likely two free agents for the 11/12 season.

I could see us doing nothing FA wise this summer. I might actually prefer not spending and saving for the 2011 class which is much deeper,and we'll be a little more desirable then to.

But, given everything I;ve heard from the Maloofs, and the fact they really want to turn this thing around and get the fans back, spending is still a possibilty. Wisely of course is the key.

I know the general consensus is that spending this offseason is extremely risky given the looming CBA expiration. Thats my belief to. But the more I think about it, the more think it's possible we'll see a repeat of what we saw with Lee and Robinson last summer. The top FA's will get their money. But everyone else, might get shut down to a certain extent if they are asking for too much. Many other teams I'm sure feel this way to. Blowing too much money this summer could really screw a franchise over.

Everyone is aware of the potential of a lower cap, contracts with less money guaranteed, and contracts for a shorter period of time, right around the corner. I could see many teams wanting too wait until next summer once the top FA's are gone, then we'll have players holding out and looking for money which owners won't spend. Lee is a very good player, but probably not worth 10M. His asking price was too high last summer, and finally late in the summer had to accept a 1 yr deal from NY. I could very well see that happening again this summer, either with him or thers, and we might be able to grab someone for relatively cheap.

The best hope for the competitiveness and sanity of the league is for all of the above - you can't have players like Kenny Thomas in the league who somehow sign long-term deals (stupid GM's) and sit around for 5 years collecting an 8 million annual paycheck. It literally kills the competitiveness of the league.

I like Morrow as well, but I wonder how much a team would have to offer to pry him away from GS. He kind of duplicates what GS has in Ellis and Curry. As much as they like him, it might not be worth it to pay much to keep him. Ellis and Curry will likely get most of the playing time, and they also have Magette there as well.

Good point about Magette. I'm not sure whose pulling the strings in the FO for the Warriors right now. Also not sure how much longer Nellie's going to be around. The question is, who would the Warriors want at 4 or 5. The way their current team is set up, Cousins doesn't fit. Neither does Jefferson. Maybe Love, since he's a good outside shooter, and Nellie likes bigs that can shoot the ball.

Problem is that Love is a better player right now than Randolph. So I can't see Minny giving up Love and the rights to the 4th pick for Randolph and the 6th pick. What would be more likely would be Minny keeping the fourth pick and aquiring the 6th pick and Randolph for Love straight up. I know that sounds a little lopsided in Minny's favor, but if I'm Minny thats the deal I'd want.

You're right, he's one of those guys that you don't want to overpay but you also wonder if his stats are inflated playing on the Warriors. I like him on the Warriors, but I am not so sure I like him on the Kings if that makes much sense.

Plus the fact that he is a very good rebounder and has the one of the best pin-point passing ability from end-to-end of the court. He really fits well with the kind of game the Warriors are playing.
