Kings after a SF

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
The Kings blurb from the yahoo Power Rankings this morning:

24. Sacramento Kings (4-10; last week's ranking: 29): The Kings are actively searching for a small forward, sources said. They would love to trade guard Marcus Thornton and his contract.

Which may or may not be true. Which hardly comes as a surprise. And which could easily just be lumped into the general "Kings active in trade talks" thread. But give the relative specificity here, and given a 5 day break, I thought I'd waste some time teasing out every possible SF resolution around the NBA. because if we are looking this early in the season, you have to imagine that sooner or later we will pull the trigger on something. So, every major and not so major SF in the NBA and can we get them:

Place your bets:

Western Conference
POR Batum -- figure it would be impossible after their hot start
POR Wright -- we could do that. Wright I a three point shooter. I was surprised we did not make an offer to him this summer. But he's marginal at this point. Are we just looking to add depth to a rotation? Or find a solution?

GSW Igoudala -- obviously no way after this summer
GSW Barnes -- you have to also figure no way, but with the deep ties between the player and our management and their management, well you still have to figure no way but we might ask anyway

LAC Dudley -- until yesterday had been a disappointment so far, and wasn't that good to start with. Not clear he would solve anything, although you could try. But Clips are contenders, odds they would move him not high.
LAC Barnes -- you know what? I would be up for bringing the local boy home a 2nd time. 3 and D with the edge our coach wants. Call him a jerk if you want. But he's tough and he competes.

LAL I doubt we have any interest in pretending any of their blown up SGs are SFs for us either, but when Kobe comes back some may be available, and many can shoot.

PHX Tucker -- tough physical experienced (overseas) guy, and this year looks to have added a 3pt shot. You never know. He impressed in our games against them, and that was always enough for Geoff to go get a guy. Still, was always marginal before this season, and not clear what Phoenix would do without him.

UTH Hayward -- completely impossible, although at least now I hope the people who were saying no way would they consider swapping McLemore for him can see what a quality player he'll be
UTH Jefferson -- impossible to see how adding another washed up dude to our stable would help anything, but I think did play under Malone in Golden State.

DEN Chandler -- constantly hurt, more mediocre than people realize, and has some mutant baby thing poking out of the top of his jersey now after he blew his entire salary to get a full body of tats. But..he's a credible mediocrity at the positon, younger than you might think given how long he's been kicking about, and possibly available once Gallinari gets back.
DEN Gallinari -- speaking of which, presumably untouchable as anchor piece for Den
DEN Hamilton -- hard to imagine us looking at him as more than deep bench rotation material, but I guess is young and can hit a three

SAN -- I'm just going to blanket the entire Spurs group and say that they are all mediocre...except in San Antonio where they are great, and the Spurs well oiled machine seems unlikely to start tinkering unless they start losing. A lot.

DAL Marion -- maybe his last year, they are doing surprisingly well, and he would likely retire rather than come play for us. Call Vince a SF and that applies to him too.
DAL Crowder -- I have no idea what to make of him, and I'm not sure anybody else does either. Freaky and wildly up and down. Even if we were interested its hard to see us installing him as a starter, or indeed being sure he would beat out anybody. but suppose its not impossible he could be had if we really wanted him.

HOU Parsons -- untouchable
HOU Casspi -- how ironic would that be part 1? Has calmed back down to mere mediocrity, but I suppose its not impossible. Maybe we could send them back some of their twerp PFs, and they could send us back some of our scrub SFs. Everybody wins.
HOU Garcia -- how ironic would that be part 2? Be back to last year. But as a pure pure spot up shooter provides space for them and could for Cuz.

NOH Aminu -- they need to upgrade their SF, not lose the only one they have. And he can't shoot at all, A problem in trying to help Cuz, although I suppose we have already gone there with Mbah. Give us 48 min of defensive minded guys. Alternately maybe we should just combine Thornton and PPat and get back whatshisname to patch up the new hole we tore in our lineup at SG.

MEM Prince -- looks done, hard to see us being interested
MEM Miller -- IS done, again hard to see the interest at this stage. Prince/Miller/Pondexter > Gay. Hollinger at his best.

MIN Brewer -- would love to have him the way he's playing this year, presumably that is completely impossible
MIN Budinger -- hurt forever, and likely off playing beach volleyball with the ladies. Who knows. Certainly no major or immediate help.
MIN Williams -- of course rumored. Is he a SF? A PF? Or just a scrub? Might be worth finding out if we could figure a package that doesn't cripple what little we have going.

Eastern Conference
CHI Deng -- things on that front could actually get interesting if Rose is going to miss the whole season. Be a firm win now move though.
CHI Butler -- untouchable I would think. Not entirely sure why, but its like the Shumpert and Bradley deals, have to let the enthusiasm pass.
CHI Dunleavy -- has the right skillset sans D, but they will need him if Rose is gone, and Cuz would likely strangle him after last year's incident
CHI Snell -- some wanted us to draft him late, but he's a rookie getting no time, even if we could get him he'd be as likely to join MacCullum in Reno as make any difference for us in Sacto

DET Villanueva -- stupid chucking defense allergic tweener chucker? Geoff's not GM anymore.
DET Singler -- more useful than you might think last year as 3 and D. But he's lost the "3" part of that thus far this year, and hard to see how he's a real fix. More of another extra rotation guy.
DET Smith -- given that the SF experiment, which BTW I thought was the right move, hasn't really been working for Detroit's big frontline, hard to see how we'd bring him in thinking it would work here. But then again, his one good game of the year came against us, so once again Petrie theory on acquisitions. Not at that $$ figure though.

CLE Clark -- interesting player. Big long 3 and D. Perfect? Eh...can't even claim the spot cleanly in Cleveland, which has SF problems as bad as ours. And another guy who was out there this summer and yet we didn't appear to pursue him. Would we suddenly now?
CLE Gee -- I hate even talking aboitu CLE SFs. they are as bad as ours. Gee is basically just an athlete. I'm sure he could be had. Why would we want?
CLE Miles -- well, can shoot a little. likes to shoot a lot. Another guy you could probably get, but that would be your big haul/solution? Again, not even able to lock down starting spot for team as terrible as we are at the position.

IND George -- pull that one off PDA, and I'll promote you from gerbil all the way up to hampster
IND Granger -- interesting case now. Its not impossible they might be willing to move him given the success George and Stephensen are having. But so injured, such a contract. Still..its one of the bigger things we could legitimately take a shot at if we were gambling men and women.
IND Copeland -- enthusiastic defenseless chucker. But can really shoot. Lit us up terribly last year, but of course that would have inspired Geoff, not the new front office. Indiana may not make a move, but Copeland is so minor to them they could maybe.

MIL Butler -- Butler is old and went home to Wisconsin on purpose. He's not coming here.
MIL Delfino -- out for the year. Heck, maybe done for his career.
MIl Antetokounmpo -- only a kid, but absolutely MUST be acquired just so we can hear Jerry try to say that name 100 times a year
MIL Ilyasova -- more stretch 4 than 3, but its the Euro combo thing of course. Mentioned mainly because he is routinely mentioned in most improve the Bucks scenarios. No idea what we have that could do that for them though. While we're at it maybe we can get one of their long shotblocking string beans for the frontline.

TOR Gay -- if they are going to blow it up, might legitimately be available. If you've seen his USG% though, you understand just what an awkward fit that might be alongside Boogie and IT. Still, another one of the big name possibilities if we look to give Cuz a real wingman.
TOR Fields -- been awful since arriving in Toronto, the worst thing he does is shoot, and has a big contract. Not happening.
TOR Novak -- strictly one dimensional bit player, Suppsoe we could get him for that bit, but he's 15min/night, not a solution.
TOR Daye -- getting no PT again, but a person of interest around this board for some time. Length, shooting...seems like there should be something there. Maybe there would be if he'd eat a damn cheeseburger or two. Would seem you could get him, but you couldn't count on anything more than another option and cross your fingers.

BOS Green -- if Bos is rebuilding, why would they keep him? Dunno. Horribly unsuited to goto guy duty, but does a lot of things, could help. Contract matches nicely with MT's BTW, but why BOS would want MT and not Green I cannot answer.
BOS Wallace -- may finally be too late to get Gerald, who's athleticsm is going the way of his hair as he's gotten massively unproductive. Still...still a hustler, and Ainge would literally pay you to take that stupid contract off his hands. Get Rondo's name involved and maybe we talk, who knows.

BKN Pierce -- self explanatory now
BKN Kirilenko -- time has probably passed on that one too, and went to Brooklyn to win with his Russian connection

NYK Anthony -- uh huh. But hey, will soon be looking for his next greener pasture after everybody else failed him again. Best part would be that between Melo, Cuz and IT you could go our and acquire defensive guys who didn't even know how to bounce a basketball. Maybe an offensive tackle or two at PF.
NYK World Peace -- yeah, no way the new regime wants an old nut
NYK Bargnani -- anybody says it, they get punched

PHL Turner -- been cleaning up with him in my fantasy leagues, you could see this coming in preseason with all the shots he'd get. And yet they are rumored to still want to move him? Nutty. Of course if we got him, it makes you wonder why we bother letting Reke go, as Reke was the rich man's version of this animal until 12 games ago and Turner will be looking to get paid in the summer. Still for all his youngish talents, neither a defender nor a three point shooter, an anti-3 and D.
PHL Young -- been a small tweener PF forward throughout his career, but I haven't forgotten he was drafted as a SF where he'd be full sized. Another adventure though. Seems like too much of one for us to take even though he too may be available as Philly tries to recover from their unwelcome early season win streak.

WSH Ariza -- well, Wsh is struggling, and sooner or later Otto Porter will get healthy and they'll want to give him time. Bu Ariza is hitting his threes this year, good athlete/defender. Horribly inefficient but not completely impossible, and ending contract in the Thornton range (not that they need Thornton with Beal).
WSH Webster -- dumb, plays no defense, but its funny how young he still is (26) and he of course can shoot if nothing else. A double team Boogie breaker. Again could be available if they are still losing and Porter comes back.

CHA Kidd Gilchrist -- you know, I was actually wondering the other day if he has disappointed them enough that they might actually be open to the idea of moving him. of course give he can't shoot/score to relieve the pressure on Boogie, he might disappoint us too.
CHA Taylor -- defense, but another half guard who can't shoot. Like MKG Cha is rebuilding and may want to hang onto youth anyway.

ATL Korver -- old now, and they seem to love him. Obviously no defense, but if we were thinkgin short term stop-doubling-Boogie-ya-big-meanies be hard to do it better than with a guy who shoots 53% from 3pt land.
ATL Carroll -- another guy who can play defense but not shoot. Hard to see how that is an upgrade over the much more established Mbah a Moute.

ORL Afflalo -- sorry guys, shooting guard. Certainly better constructed than any we currently have though and likely available...albeit for young assets for a rebuilding team.
ORL Harkless -- gets minutes on a bad team just lie our guys, hard to see the point of just adding another clutter guy
ORL Harris -- think their hopes for this guy, well founded or not, are too high for him to be available
ORL Hedo -- hey, think he's still technically part of their roster right? Bring Hedo home!

MIA James -- my #1 target I think

I wouldn't be opposed to making a push for Xavier Henry - I wouldn't call him a blown-up SG, I think he's full size. Listed at 6'6" 220, but he looked a bit bigger out there against us to me. Hitting threes at 44% this year, and still only 22. Henry would be a decent gamble if we could pry him away, but I don't know what it would take. Depending on the package, I might like him even more than Derrick Williams. I think Williams has a higher ceiling but such a steep dropoff to that floor that I don't want to overpay.

He's hitting some threes in D'Antoni's version of junkball, but he's still shooting .402, which matches his career FG%. He's about Reke-sized. You could probably get him, but man, that would just be another body to throw randomly out there and hope. Not knowing what we are up to, maybe that's what we are after. But that hardly seems even worthy of a rumor. Just slip somebody a 2nd round pick, except I think we've used up all our 2nd round picks for about 15 years doing that already.

Thanks. Very interesting run-through. There are many facts to being an NBA GM. Not for me but somebody has got to do it.

Brick, if we can't get Lebron, I wouldn't mind settling for Durant

You're right. I missed a whole team. Silly me.

The problem with Durant though is that they lack other offensive options and might want Jimmer back in return. :p

Well, he measured out at the pre-draft 1.25 inches taller than Tyreke, exact same wingspan, one more inch standing reach, 3.5 more inches max vert. I think that 1.25 inches isn't insignificant. Maybe he's a throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks kind of guy, but we've got a pretty good idea of what doesn't stick. Anyway, I'd take a shot on Henry over a lot of the guys that you listed that are remotely available - I thought he was worth a bit more mention than just anonymously getting lumped in with the Lakers shooting guards.

Austin Daye is a tantalizing option. Great size for a 3 and can knock down the 3 with ease to spread the floor. Solid ball handler as well, so he's not a headless chicken ala Ben when he has the ball.

Contract is dirt cheap with a team option next year. As far as his weight is concerned, I'm not too worried about that. A couple nights out with Chuck and he'll be at 230 in no time.

I think Hardaway Jr on NYK would also be an option.....may be a swing guy but still I know the coaches talked up Snell and Hardaway Jr during the pre- draft. Glenn Rice jr from Washington as well. These guys seems more acquirable....both teams are looking to win now also.

I think any deal for a veteran legit SF is going to take us trading a guy like JT or one of the PGs or PPat. I do think that McCallum was drafted with the idea of trading one of GV or IT at some point in exchange for a SF or shot blocking type.

Would not mind Williams after we get him we can look for a starting PG

Between the guys u guys mentioned (daye, henry, derrick williams), i like daye the best. fundamental good IQ player that plays both sides of the floor and is a consistent shooter when given a consistent role.
