Well, there are a few guys we could take a shot at - but keep in mind that basically all of them are going to have question marks surrounding them.
Art Parakhouski - has been mentioned above as an under-the-radar guy who may be available.
Jarvis Varnado - basically an undersized shot-blocker type without any offense, and may be gone anyway.
Dexter Pittman - big man who has skills but struggles with weight issues and conditioning
Charles Garcia - athletic with decent size, but not a smart basketball player, not a good defender
Jerome Jordan - Seven footer with offensive post game but not much defense, may be the best gamble of the bunch
But there's not a long history of being able to find what we want in the second round. I did a quick look to find the subjectively best big men to come out of the second round or go undrafted in the past 15 years and found 15 I liked:
Undersized with offense:
Boozer
Millsap
Landry
Haslem
Blair
Undersized with no offense:
Ben Wallace
Softie:
Brad Miller
Okur
Foreign:
Marc Gasol
Varejao
Scola
Oberto
Question marks:
Andray Blatche
Bench guys:
Glen Davis
Chris Andersen
And there's about one guy of that quality available after the first round in each year. So you have to kind of get lucky and find him, and even then a lot of these guys have limitations. Usually there's a reason they're not taken in the first round. If we were to nab Evan Turner, we'd most likely be waiting for free agency or next year's draft to find big man help.
A couple of other guys that either will be second round picks or, could be second round picks because I think right now their on the bubble as first round picks.
Number one is Soloman Alabi. Most likely a first round pick, but he's definitely sliding. Bad showings at some of the team visits could push him into the second round. I put Parakhouski in that same area. His stock could either go up or down depending on how he shows at the team visits. By the way, Winthrop decided that they wern't going to let Parakhouski beat them this game like he did the two previous matchups. They double and triple teamed him the entire game. Sometimes even when he didn't have the ball. As a result he didn't have much of an offensive presence in the game. However he still pulled down around 18 boards and blocked a couple of shots.
Some other guys the could be in the second round are:
Renardo Sidney: A 6'9" PF that was suspossed to play this year for Mississippi St. He caught up in some recuiting violations and never got the go ahead to play. I honestly don't know what his situation is. He could try and play in college next year, or he could throw his name into the pool. Hard to say anything about him other than he was highly touted coming out of highschool, but with some issues.
Keith Benson: A 6'11" C/PF.. Tall and skinney but very athletic. A very good defensive player at the level he's playing at. Has the potential to put on more weight (muscle) and will need to in order to play at the next level. He definitely has potential, but isn't ready to play significant minutes in the NBA.
Arnett Moultrie: 6'10" PF.. Plays for UTEP and is part of the reason their having such a good season. He doesn't get a lot of press but I like the kid and I think he has a future in the NBA. Definitely a second round pick if he declares. Good chance he'll stay in school though, and would probably be a first round pick next year.
Michael Washington: 6'10" PF.. A guy I had high hopes for coming into this season, but who has been a disappointment so far. Still he would be a bad gamble in the second round. He's athletic and has potential, but also needs to add some muscle..
Arinze Onuaku: 6'10" C/PF.. A very physcial 275 pound player. He's another one that doesn't get much press on a very good Syracuse team. He has quietly gotten better as the year has progressed. He's gotten more aggressive, which I thought was lacking at the beginning of the year. Especially for a man of his size. Of late he's been banging bodies all over the floor and playing with fire in his eye's. He's somewhat limited athelticly, but he's hardly a plodder. He's very strong and if nothing else he'll give you good man defense and some tough rebounding. His offense is mostly putbacks, but he'll surprise you with a little jump hook and some advanced post moves from time to time. He could be better than most would think at the next level.
Andrew Oqilvy: A 7'0" C.. Not one of my favorite players, but he'll definitely be there in the second round. He's a pretty skilled player who plays tougher than he's given credit for. However he's athleticly challenged and his long range potential is limited. Right now I would call him a poor mans Brad Miller..
I'll close by saying that I really, really, really don't like Jerome Jordan. I have faithfully watched him play 5 times this year, and to say that I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. Not only would I not waste a second round pick on him, I wouldn't even invite him to camp if he were to undrafted. Thats how much I think of him. He's a total waste of being seven feet tall. I have one more game recorded of him to watch. If anything happens in that game to change my mind I'll let you know.
