so its finally kennys last year as sad as that is( i remember his triple double days with us). hes a huge expiring contract.
what should we do with him? Just let him expire into nothing or look for a trading partner? maybe get some picks or a needed position filled?

There is no point trading him unless your getting a future piece of the puzzle.

Looks like rudy gay might be available. would probably have to take jaric to make it work straight up for KT. Don't know if the maloofs would take on his salary for another year though.

Wait and see what our options are at the trade deadline. If there isn't anything there that will substantially help our team, then let his contract expire after the season. I'm just getting a little nervous about the fact that Westphal might decide to use him on a semi-regular basis.

I have mixed emotions on playing him. He has been a good soldier. He hasn't complained and apparently practices hard. So part of me would like to reward him for that. At the same time, I don't want him taking minutes away from a young player. Maybe you just get him in for a couple of minutes here and there on an emergency basis.

As far as what to do with him. That just depends on what kind of deal comes up. It would have to be a no brainer to move him before the trade deadline, simply because in the next offseason the Kings will have plenty of players available to them, and depending on they decide to keep, and what the cap is, somewhere between 12 and 14 million.

To my mind, a player that might move before the trade deadline is Nocioni. I just don't see him in our future. I've got nothing against him. He's the perfect grizzled veteran. I just think he would be a good fit on a contending team, and he has enough value to bring something in return.

I Agree Kenny has been a good dude with all the stuff the kings have done to him. If we could move him with Noc that would be cool but those are two huge contracts to move together. And i'm thinking it would be nice to keep Noc around for a year or two to be that Vet on the team. Our young guys apparently really look up to him. And I'm geussing Omri will learn alot from him because there games are similar. I think Tyreke even said in an interview he was most impresed with Nocioni out of everyone on the team.. So i dunno it might be nice to keep the guy around.
But yah your right Baj if a great deal did come to us for Noc I would have to take it.. especially if we got a young big.
Im wondering which teas would be interested in K9's contract?
Knicks?? Raps??

I'm sure either of those teams would love to have his contract to clear space for next year. The question is of course. What do they have that we want. I don't think were going to get Bosh, :D, so, I'm not sure who. I was looking at the Miami roster and almost their entire roster are free agents next offseason.

The only player with an absolute guaranteed contract is James Jones. Beasley, Cook, and Chalmers are all team options. Wade is a player option. And all the rest are unrestricted freeagents. Esentially, Miami could get rid of every player on their roster except Jones. Their not going to do that of course, but they'll definitely have cap space.

I wouldn't mind Westphal playing KT in emergency situations. But what I don't want to see him taking minutes from the young guys when at the most he will only be here this season.

I understand your point about him playing hard in practice and being a good soldier, but if he really wanted to, he could have accepted a buyout sometime in the last year and continued his play elsewhere. He publicly stated he wouldn't accept a buyout, and part of me see's him as a guy who just wants to collect his check. So if he really wanted to help a team and contribute, I think he would have taken a buyout and had been on his way a while ago.

Kt

A lot of things can happen between now and the deadline. It depends on what deal might come up. I could see the Knicks getting involved. But injuries could also make Kenny more desirable. I don't see the Kings playing him much though. There are too many young guys that need the minutes to show what they can do. It's too bad. He's a good guy. He's just in a bad situation.

Your last statement is true. But essentially he would be giving up a few million dollars on a chance that he would be able to make it up later with another team. Easy for us to say he should have done that. Its not our money. But at this point in his career, and at his age, I can understand his reluctance to take a buyout. Throw in the fact that his image has been tarnished, there's a good chance he might not find any takers. At best, its possible that he might find himself playing for the league minimum.

Look, seriously, anyone and I mean anyone that would say they would have taken the buyout in Kenny's situation is just plain telling fibs!

No logically thinking adult would say that they would walk away from a few million $$$ and actually mean it.

I seem to remember a fellow by the name of Wells, who turned down a big contract and was never heard of again.

If Rudy Gay is available... you go for it. We would actually look decent on paper again if we picked up Rudy Gay.

Go for Gay

If you can come up with Rudy Gay in a trade for Kenny Thomas you take it. Gay is what Petrie hoped Donte Greene would be. I don't see Donte ever being close to what Gay is and Gay hasen't peaked yet.

Depending on who we can get, we trade him for players who are malcontent with their team. I can think of a few, but in reality it would serve the kings more to do similar 2 what we did with BM52. Get a couple decent players and a draft pick. I would suggest trading KT to Orlando for their odd man out of the rotation, and an expiring and a draft pick.

I'll go back to my orginal statement. Unless we get offered a no brainer deal, I'd wait, let his contract expire and use whatever cap space we have to sign someone in the offseason. To my mind, Rudy Gay would fall into that no brainer area. By the way, if Gay isn't signed to an extension, and it looks like he's not going to be at the moment. The he'll be a restricted free agent next offseason. Apparently he and the Grizz are far apart on what he's worth.

As far as high profile signings, I think he is the guy the Kings have the best chance to end up with. He's also the best fit for us. If Evans pans, Thompson and Hawes continue to grow, Martin keeps scoring, and we signed Gay, we might be in the playoffs sooner than expected. Even at that point I still think a big ol' defensive center to come off the bench is a must.

No argument from me. I wonder if we could pry Robin Lopez away from the Suns. He would be the perfect backup center. He's a shotblocker and rebounder. And he's a tough kid..

If we could get Gay I'd be ecstatic. He's young, athletic, talented, a great fit.
