Jerry Reynolds is special and not the good kind of special. Jerry Reynolds gives the area a bad reputation with his commentary. Why is he still being hired by the Kings? Every time I watch the games, I have to laugh in amazement as the things he comes up with.

Jerry reynolds Compared Kevin Martin to Michael Jordan when he made a dunk, compared Spencer Hawes to Larry Bird when he made a 3 and now Im listening to this game against Portland saying that Greg Oden would be good at pulling hey cause of his energy? Come on, Why is this guy an announcer?

I don't mind and actually kinda like the always grumpy Grant, but Jerry is terrible

Seriously, Everyone I've met since I moved here feels the same way, the dude is a laughing stock............. Someone please educate me on why they like him?

I Love the Kings and I love the look of the new team...............Im looking forward to watchng this team develop.

Oh, I have been saying this for some time now. Not going to start a thread about it, but he's painful to listen to, and it bothers me that a whole generation of would be Kings fans might be learning their basketball from him. No wonder we get badly confused people on here sometimes. :p

(actually he would be fine as the 3rd man on a three man crew -- the comic relief guy. The problem only arises when he actually starts talking basketball.)
 
Jerry is folksy and says a lot of obvious things... but I chuckle at his ability to rile up angst in folk as to post multi paragraph rants against him. :)

Guess it's a sign our team is pretty bad this year eh?
 
I still maintain that part of his problem is Howdy Doody sitting next to him. Grant actually serves up comments he knows will get Jerry going off on some tangent or another... Of the two, I like Jerry a lot more than Grant. Of course, in my perfect world, Gary Gerould and Jim Kozimor would do the broadcast ans let the radio people fend for themselves. Maybe Carmichael Dave could pick up the slack...

Definitely not; bill walton is in a league of his own. I believe Reynolds is half joking some of the time with his comments, but Walton seems to believe everything that comes out of his mouth.

Anyone watch that Friends episode guest starring Alec Baldwin? Where he plays this over optimistic guy who makes everything sound like its the greatest thing ever to come about in the world? That's Bill Walton.

Jerry Reynolds is just a goofy grandpa.

Bill Walton isn't in a league of his own. He's in a universe of his own - and it's not populated by anything or anyone we'd recognize.

I usually play the "take a shot every time he say 'absolutely'" game, but usually pass out after the first quarter.
 
Compared to about 75% of the other color commentators in the league, Jerry is as unbiased as it gets.
 
he seems to have a sort of subtle wit which can be appreciated, though his commentary is crude

after watching games on League Pass for a time I can attest that Grant and Jerry are, if nothing else, much more professional than most
 
My favorite is when Jerry says, "Mikki more shot the ball about seven foot."

He seems like a good guy and all, but I have no idea why this guy gets paid by the Kings. I mean, what is his job exactly??
 
Put me down as one of those who doesn't understand the Jerry-hate. Reynolds is an Indiana country-boy, and he talks like one. That certainly doesn't make him bad at doing the color on the TV broadcast, even if its not your cup of tea. Even if his style is not for everybody, technically I think he's a better announcer than Grant. It's always Jerry managing to subtly correct Grant when he pronounces an opponent's name wrong 5 times in a row, it's always Jerry gently pointing out the actual recipient of a rebound when the guy Grant said had it isn't even out on the floor, and it's always Jerry questioning Grant's view of events right before the replay shows Grant was wrong.

Sure, Grant's doing the play-by-play and Jerry isn't - so he doesn't really have the opportunity to make the mistakes Grant does - but he does manage to correct him on most of them, usually so gently that it's not obvious Grant was dead wrong unless you're paying attention. That alone makes him the superior announcer in my eyes.

He's clearly got an encyclopedic knowledge of the facts of the game, often throwing out the name of the high school where a certain player went, or talking about a college game where so-and-so dropped 30 points.

And on top of that, he makes me chuckle at least once a game. I mean, "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want"? "Grandma, put the kids to bed, they don't need to see this"? That's great stuff.

My dream scenario would be for Grant to get that coveted New York Giants play-by-play job and to have Gary Gerould move in to do p-b-p to Jerry's color. Radio could sort itself out. Maybe Kayte. I'm not a big fan of Kos.
 
How about Kayte. That would be nice. Could they show her doing commentary while the game is going on in the background.

While I share your thoughts on Grant, I just don't think that Jerry offers any real insight into anything and he rarely says anything intelligent. If you want somebody who is going to be a Kings cheerleader and compare Spencer Hawes to some of the greatest players in NBA history, then Jerry is your man.

With that being said, Grant actually gets on my nerves more so than Jerry. At least Jerry has a personality. Years ago, they switched for a season and they had Gary Gerould do the TV play by play and they moved Grant to radio play by play. I actually thought Grant was great at the radio play by play. He was exciting and really got into it and I thought Gary was perfect for TV.

Some of the most awkward moments on TV are watching Grant and Jerry at halftime or after the games. Just watching Grant's face and hearing is fake little chuckle makes me cringe.
 
Jerry, Grant and even Bill Walton and Tommy Heinsohn are all better than numerous other guys that can't even speak coherently yet get jobs because they are former stars in their area. Every announcing team has an agenda, whether it be to be homers, anti-homers or to tell the story the network wants to tell.

Good point. I think that Henry Turner would fit into your category of former stars who can't speak coherently.
 
If you go back over threads on this general subject here the past few years you'll find consensus is more thumbs up Jerry than Grant.

Jerry being basically harmless, jovial, corny, colorful, homer, wealth of Kings trivia and archival NBA history. Grant painted by most as arrogant, rude, NY/East Coast biased, colorless, humorless, fake, defensive (no homer, he says), jealous (like a whining dork constantly brings up millions player make even to their face).

Gary (Bhagwan) Gerrold = 100% class

Agreed. I like Jerry. Grant I could do without, but he is still better than many I have heard.
 
The impression that Jerry Reynolds has on viewers has more to say about the critical viewers than Jerry. It is similar to the effect that Sarah Palin had on voters. Urbanites, especially lawyers and academics, have distain for "simple' individuals like Jerry Reynolds or Sarah Palin. Whereas, rural people tend to appreciate the Jerrys and Sarahs of the world.

Rural people tend to have a self-deprecating, silly, sense of humor. Academics, and more "sophisticated' individuals, always take themselves seriously. It is cultural. I am an educated retited professional that lives in the woods. I like Jerry and Sarah.
 
Jerry and Grant rule!

Why such the hatred for Jerry and Grant? I'm stuck with whatever channel that NBA League Pass provides me with. What kind of announcers do I get stuck with? Arrogant, opinionated, and biased announcers. At least the Kings broadcasting team admits when the team messes up and says "that was the right call."

I would take Jerry and Grant any day over the people I get stuck with 50-60% of the time. I like the down-home nature of Jerry. It reminds me a lot of the way Sacramento was when the Kings moved to town.
