Charlotte forward Gerald Wallace has a partially-collapsed lung and a rib injury following a collision in Tuesday night's overtime win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Bobcats said Wednesday.
Wallace was diagnosed as having between 30 and 40 percent of his left lung collapsed and a non-displaced fracture of the fifth rib after being examined at a Los Angeles hospital. He had a chest tube inserted to help restore the lung to functional capacity, but will remain hospitalized for the next 48 hours for observation, the team said.
Wallace had scored 15 points before leaving with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter after a flagrant foul by Andrew Bynum knocked him to the floor.
Wallace is the Bobcats' second-leading scorer with 16.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

I feel really bad for Wallace--but there's a reason why athletic freak swingmen don't try to go for highlight reel plays a lot of the time--it's injury conducive. Not to mention there's a certain deterioration that goes along with being one--
I remember Ricky Davis and Shawn Marion were once all-out slashers, and although that gave them a big boost early in their careers, all that wear and tear really deteriorates the body, and both of them have wisely cut down on the slashing, developed a jumper, and made themselves more versatile in that way. Now, both of them have peaked early and Ricky Davis is now one of the worst players in the league, so there's a drawback--but if Wallace doesn't want to end his career prematurely, it would be wise for him to only slash when he really has an opening, and really hone up that jumper.
Of course the drawback is that if you never really had the touch in the first place--Darius Miles, early outstanding dunker, horrible shooter, undergoes a serious regression, gets an injury that took him out of the league last year. But while Wallace has really worked on his jumper and really drastically reduced most of his athletic markers (steals, blocks)--he still really wants to dunk and his free throw attempts have largely been kept the same, so he's still risking his body out there.
So unfortunately, it's almost commonplace to hear about an injury from Wallace, because of his style of play. Crash is a unique player in that he's a very good stat stuffer, and is gifted with immense physical skills, but there's a reason why few play with the reckless abandon he does--it was fun to watch early in his career, but now it's coming to haunt him, frankly.
Some of the blame has to go on Bynum, of course, but he just left his ribs exposed when he was attempting that play--really putting himself in prime injury position.
BTW thanks VF for editing--I just wanted to add a list of GWall's injuries over the past year.
The guy has had 13 different injuries all the way back to about one a half years ago--and now this is his 14th. Really telling.
