Sixers to fine Iverson, Webber

Associated Press
National Basketball Association News Wire

PHILADELPHIA -- Maurice Cheeks had just finished calling Allen Iverson the ultimate gamer, who always played hard and always gave his full effort for his teammates and fans.

That was before the Sixers coach was informed by a reporter about 55 minutes before Tuesday night's tipoff against New Jersey that Philadelphia's franchise player was not yet at the game, and neither was Chris Webber.

So Cheeks left for the locker room, saw for himself the jerseys hanging in the locker, and returned to tell reporters the duo were "not going to play tonight," against New Jersey.

The 76ers will fine Iverson and Webber for not being at the arena 90 minutes before the game against the Nets, and their top-two leading scorers did not show up in the locker room until the game tipped off.

"They should be here, they're not here and it will be addressed," team president Billy King said.

King said he knew at Tuesday morning's shootaround that Iverson and Webber would be given the home regular-season finale off because of injuries. But King did expect the duo to be at the game. Iverson was to miss the game with an ankle injury, and Webber had a sore back.

"I'd like them to be here, hell yeah," an agitated King said on the court about 45 minutes before tip. "They're not and I'm going to take care of it."

With reporters staked out awaiting the duo's arrival, King walked by the horde minutes before tip and let loose with a profanity-laced rant when pressed again about their absence.

"Our team is not good right now, I know that," King said, his voice rising with every word.

When asked what King should say to the fans who bought tickets thinking they might see Iverson's last game as a Sixer, he walked off.

Iverson is second in the league in scoring (33.0 ppg), and averaging 7.6 assists. Webber's averaging 20.2 points. The Sixers started Willie Green, and Steven Hunter in their place.

The Sixers were eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoff race on Sunday. They are scheduled to close out the season in Charlotte on Wednesday. Cheeks said the pair might not make the trip.

"If they're not playing tonight, they're probably not playing tomorrow," Cheeks said.

Cheeks never said Iverson or Webber was not going to play for the 20 minutes he talked to reporters before he was told they had not arrived at the Wachovia Center. He looked dejected when he returned and slumped in his seat, looking much like he did 11 days ago when he remained at the postgame press conference podium, ice bottle on his head, with the lights turned out.

When asked if he was disappointed in the duo, Cheeks said, "I'm done man."

That last line by Cheeks says it all...I feel bad for the man - looks like his tenure is seriously in trouble. I am nearly positive that either Webber, Iverson, or Mo Cheecks will be gone by next year. Billy King is a no nonsense type of guy who will likely not stand for this.

Unprofessional and pathetic. They both make 40+ millions together and couldn't get their team in the PO in a bad Easten conference and now they don't even show up. LOSERS

Wow, it's amazing what a sense of 'entitlement' can do to a person. I can't help but think of how many guys would show up 4 hours before tip-off if that's what they had to do to be in the NBA.

It's fan appreciation night, they could have played a few minutes.:( I know they're disappointed about missing PO's but it's not going to help their awful attendance and it makes their thanking of the fans on sixers.com meaningless. I was going to go to Charlotte and see them play tomorrow but now I'm glad I'm not going. It's not going to be pretty when King talks to them. I thought things were bad in NY but it's getting ugly in Philly also. I feel sorry for Mo also.

Wow. I am flat out disappointed. I know things haven't been great in Philly. I know AI & Webb have felt that other players haven't given their all. I've sympathized. I've felt bad (and sad) that Webb will sit out his first playoffs in many years. But, wow. I'm sorry, they should be there. They should be there to finish the season & to thank the fans that bothered to show up to their games. Not showing up isn't acceptable, even to me, and I am a HUGE Webber fan.:(

That was a dumb and disrespectful thing to do to the fans and the organization. The people who came to the game paid hard earned money, the least A.I. and Chris could do is come to the game. They're getting paid millions of dollars to play ball, other people would do it for half that or even a fourth that. If Ron and Mike did that here in Sacramento I would be very angry.

I'm just glad people aren't talking about the Webber trade anymore.

Well, since Webber had nothing to do with who the Kings are today, why would we talk about it??;)

But, while we are on the subject...

I have maintained, and still maintain, that the Webber trade was bad for the Kings. I still think that Webb brought more to the Kings then Kenny Thomas (and Corliss from the bench) does. I still wish that they had done the Artest/Peja trade FIRST & gone from there.... etc.,etc. I could go on, but why?

that has nothing to do with what's going on in Philly today, and right now, today, I am disappointed that Webb (& AI) did not feel like they owed it to the fans to show up.

You know, those of us who felt that the Webber trade was a bad idea have managed to move on and stop bringing it up constantly. It would be nice if the trade's supporters could do the same instead of waving it in our faces, completely unprovoked, every five seconds.

BRAVO!!!!

I was in favor of the trade even when we were playing bad, honestly. I loved Chris but his contract was colossal and you can bet we'd be ripping on him for his defensive play if he was still here.

The point is that the trade was OVER a bleeping year ago. That whole year was contentious around here, to say the least. People who like to continue to bring up the trade are almost always those who were in favor of it, and they only bring it up when they think there's something negative about Webber they can use to say, "See! We were right!"

The horse is dead. It's been dead for a long time. Its carcass has rotted away to nothing more than dust in the wind... and most of us would just like to look forward.

Yes. Send them to the Knicks!!!

I like Chris. I'm disappointed in him. That was inexcusable. However, they feel about their teammates, they owed it to the fans, their boss and owed it to themselves to uphold professional mature standards of behavior. I feel really bad for Mo. He has always seemed like a nice guy and a class act. He looks like he aged a ton this year. :(

looks like they did show up, just showed late.
they won the game though.

They both apologized today but doesn't sound very sincere IMO. If they really wanted to appreciate the fans they should have been out there late or not. How many fans were in the locker room?

Iverson and Webber Apologetic For Their Actions
posted April 19, 2006
by Brian Kirschner, Sixers.com

A remorseful Allen Iverson and Chris Webber each apologized to the fans during a pregame availability as the 76ers were set to close out the 2005-06 regular season in Charlotte. The duo had arrived late to the Sixers final home game on April 18 and were not seen sitting on the bench. The game was designated as Fan Appreciation Night.

“I just think that yesterday was just a big misunderstanding. We didn’t try to shun the fans or whatever is being reported, (that is) disrespect fans,” Webber said.

“I definitely wasn’t trying to disrespect (Head Coach) Mo (Cheeks) in any way or the fans like every body is talking about,” Iverson said. “I’ve been here for 10 years and to just deliberately try to disrespect the fans is crazy. I would never try to do that in any way and I’m upset that it got out and it came across that way.”

Cheeks was also remorseful for the events in Philadelphia and how the night unfolded. Speaking to the media before the Bobcats’ game, Cheeks recognized how important Iverson and Webber are to the fans and reiterated how “very, very apologetic” the two players were in a meeting he had with each.

Echoing what Webber said earlier, Cheeks said there was miscommunication.

“I just thought my communication to Chris and Allen was not what it should have been and it was just a series of miscommunications, and I take responsibility. Personally, I am very sorry for my communication to you, to the media, and to the fans because in no way do I want to disillusion anyone about Allen and Chris.”

Neither player understood the magnitude that their actions had. The pair arrived at the Wachovia Center just before tip-off of the New Jersey game, but did not sit on the bench, remaining in the locker room.

“I honestly brought it on myself by showing up at 7 o’clock. But I just gave people ammunition to be able start a whole bunch of stuff before the summer comes,” Iverson said. “Every summer is this way, I just feel bad that I let that happen.”

“The way that it happened on fan appreciation night and to the people that really support us so much, I wish it wouldn’t have happened,” Webber said. “If I would have known that this is the impact it would have had, I would not have acted that way.”
