Isn't it true we can't trade Bibby until July 1st?

Trades are prohibited until the day after the team's season ends. So, techinically, we have been able to trade since last month. The trade moratorium kicks in for ALL teams on July 1, 2007 and lasts until July 10.
But isn't it true that since he can opt out we cant trade him because he is not officially on the roster for next year yet. He won't declare officially what he is doing until July 1st.

He has an opt-out clause, so he's on the roster unless he chooses to activate the option. Of course, with that option hanging over him, any team that might be interested in a trade deal would probably just as soon wait until after the trade moratorium because at that point the player option for this season will have expired.

And, after the season he just had, I don't think he's gonna want to opt out of his contract with the Kings.

Yea, that pretty much clears it up. Bibby can't be traded till july 1st.
Well technically I think he can't be traded until later on in july because from July 1st until about the 10th or 12th, I am not sure that teams can do trades during that period.

Am I wrong?

You are right. No team can make a trade during the moratorium.

I beleive if Bibby takes an action on option to stay INTO his contract that he could be dealt before July 1st. If he waits until june 30th to do it, then it would have to be after the moratorium

Yes, if he waives the option before July 1st, he could be traded, now to teams already out of the playoffs and other teams as they finish the playoffs. I seriously doubt Bibby will do that, even if he's already sure he won't exercise the opt-out. It just removes a choice for him, so why do it sooner than later?

Because it removes a choice he's not interested in. Even if Petrie walked up to Bibby and said "the moment we can, we're trading you, and we don't care where," he'd still be declining the option to leave $28 million guaranteed on the table, knowing that it would probably take him six years to make what he's owed in two.

Generally, players, or their agents, to put pressure on the team, do wait until the last possible moment to declare their intentions. (I believe it cost someone a few million dollars a couple of years ago.) Either way, we all know what he's going to do, so, if we have a taker, the worst case scenario is that we can't move him until July 10. I don't think there will be many free agents available that will drastically alter anyone's plans at PG (Mike Bibby >>> Smush Parker), so we'll still be able to do business mid-July.

By the way, if there are any teams out there basing their opinion of a player off of the way hoopshype.com describes Bibby's game, we should be able to get a hell of a player for him in a trade.

Great knowledge of the game... Excellent ballhandler... Possesses one of the best crossovers in the League... Superb shooter... Great shot off the dribble... Excels under pressure... A clutch player... One of the best pick-and-roll players in the NBA... Very good in the open court... Average defender... One of the top point guards in the League.

Why are we trading him again? :p

^when was that posted? 2002?

bibby can be all those things on the right team. i'd almost forgotten what that bibby was like in the wake of this season.

I agree he's not interested and don't think there is minimal chance he'll exercise his option. I just don't see any compelling reason for him to pro-actively waive it either, unless he wants to oblige the team for some reason. He never has to say anything. He just lets the deadline go by.

A bit over enthusiastic, perhaps, but not THAT far off base. The last two points are the only ones that stand out to me as being flat out wrong. And, considering how many other guards in the league share his deficiencies, the wrongness of the last statement is entirely dependent on how big a group you're looking at (top 5, top 10, top 25?).

He had a crappy season, folks, but I sincerely doubt that he magically turned into 100% suck overnight.

No, he's still a good player on the right team. I just wish that profile was 100% accurate. We'd have no problem moving him if that were the case.
