Is Hawes Getting Corrupted by Miller & Miki?

Kingster

Hall of Famer
I sure am starting to see a lot more whinning to the refs from Hawes. I even see him do the 'ol "stop playing and complain to the ref and then get back into the action" schtick. Didn't see that at the beginning of the season. I wonder why? Could it be Miller is living up to his name of role model for his young acolyte? Could it be that the Miki rants are rubbing off? When you think about it, how could it not? If the guys you look up to are weak-kneed out of control sensitives like Miller and Miki, wouldn't you, as a young 19 year old start to think that maybe it's not so bad to go after those refs? So much for the role models.

he's going to have to realize that being a big 7 footer means you will get fouled a lot and probably won't get a lot of calls.

it should make him want to work on his post moves even more

Lets not pick on the guy. Nobody whines more than Kobe and no one calls him weak knee whatever. Garnet whines, Malone used to whine. Its the NBA, everybody whines. If we had better officials we would probably have less whinning.

As I recall, the whining mentality started to become noticeable when Mitch Richmond joined the team. It seems to have been a team trait ever since.

He's getting more playing time so it would become more noticeable, they aren't rubbing off on him.

Spencer is a debater and likes to argue anyway so it would be expected that he would complain to the refs if he felt it was a bad call.

well at least hes showing emotion, hes a kid.. kids complain.. i kno that because im barely older then hawes and i complain alot:rolleyes:
I don't mnd if he complains to the refs as long as he gets back on d.
more emotion the better.

Noticed it too, and do think there is a teamwide mentality that can spread like cancer. What I don't know is how Hawes would act in other circumstances -- we obviously have little evidence whether he is just naturally a whiner, or whether having our other bigs whine on EVERY SINGLE call really is rubbing off on him.

Hawes should be a smart guy and realize no whining has ever, I mean EVER, gotten a call reversed. And as a 7 ft rookie on a mediocre team he will not get the calls. Mikki just talks all the time on the floor and likes to "discuss" the calls. But notice he gets 5-6 fouls a night. Brad does complain/whine on too many calls especially now that he was getting to the rim so much.

Could be Hawes is (was, now) picking it up from Brad. But if he reads this site: Smarten up Spencer, whining is 99% negative on the whiner as viewed by the Refs. And Refs don't like to be challanged!!

I like what Ron said last year…”we shouldn’t be talking to the refs that much anyway” or something like that. I hope Spencer doesn’t start developing the whine attitude on every call/non-call. I’m going to wait some time before I say that he complains too much.

I wouldn't worry too much yet. He is a rookie and gets no calls whatsoever. I hope he loses that trait; however, we'll see as time goes on.
