Is Bonzi pulling a Sprewell?

Can he just sit out this season and hope to try and score a big contract next season?

He's gotta feed his children some time, right? ;)

I doubt it..

He could, but I would be shocked if he did. I think Bonzi is too much of a competitor. He could take a mid level for one year and try again next year. Actually, thats the only option he has and had better do it while someone still has a MLE. First thing he needs to do is fire his agent.

I no longer think anyone will pull a "Spreewell" in the near future... it didn't work out so great for Spree.

I doubt if Bonzi will have anytrouble getting a MLE contract for 2 years with the second year a player option from any number of teams... but untill all OTHER options are closed why take one?

I think Bonzi, realistically, has another month to mull all his options before he has to pull the trigger, so-to-speak. You dont want to get too close to training camp, etc. before you make this sort of decision, obviously. At this point, I think that that is all Bonzi will get, the MLE, and unfortulately for him and us, his agent screwed him and the Kings. I thought it would be worked out a while back, especially after the way the free agent dust has been settling, its obvious what options ARE available to Bonzi. I wonder what gives?

Bonzi has until October. If he doesn't by then, he'll likely try again later in the season.
True, however, I am guessing teams will have spent thevast majority of their funds by then. Atlanta might be able to scoop him up if the Harrington deal falls through... or after they get that trade exception from Indiana.

I just wonder if the Kings will sign Bonzi at the end of the summer for, say, $3 mil for one season; that way, even if that contract put them over the cap, they would still be paying less than $6 Mil on him... I kind of doubt it though...

We have the LLE left, and 800K left of the MLE. The LLE will likely be spent, and would be on a big man. Besides, were loaded already at the wings with Douby/Martin/Salmons/Garcia/Artest.

Bonzi's not coming back to Sac. If he does, Garcia would likely be moved for a big man in order for Bonzi to fit in. But, that whole scenario is quite unlikely.

Why were we in such a hurry to sign Salmons when Bonzi is still available? If we would have been more patient I'm sure Bonzi's camp would realize Sac is their best option. I just saw something in him that I haven't seen in other Kings players-TOUGHNESS. Him and Ron make such a duo on the wings...It just pisses me off thinking how poorly this situation played out for both sides, and how great things could have been.

The question is not will the Kings sign Bonzi for the LLE (if they still have it) the question is if Bonzi will play for the Kings. It's a pride thing. He may have a hard time getting a start on a better team but I jsut don't see him comming back for less money now... thats a BIG plate of crow.

I hope Bonzi does not go to a contender , i could care less if he goes to the nuggets. But i heard rumors about him joining the spurs which would spell trouble for the west.

That would suck if Bonzi went 2 the Spurs.

I fully agree. I was so looking forward to both of them on the floor creating havoc for other teams- The Unguardables

The Bonzi era is over. There is no more Bonzi. It's time to move on.

If the arena deal is not passed, the Kings will be moving on too.

I have heard that it was a bit higher than that at first. I knew they had to be pretty far apart for the negotions to come to a complete stop like that.

Bonzi won't sit out the season. He's at the prime of his carreer or slightly past. Time is not on his side. The fact is he blew it. Misjudged the market and now is up against the wall. I think its sad because he could have been apart of a good team and still made a lot of money. Atlanta is really the only team that can offer him a lot of money because their 20 mil under the salary cap. However they don't seem inclined to spend money and even if they did, would you want to play for Atlanta? SAD!

Atlanta isn't getting him anyways... Joe Johnson is the starting SG no doubt, Josh Smith or Marvin Williams will be at SF, both are developing, need time, and they're high on them. Then you got Childress on the bench, who also needs some solid minutes.

Can we offer him the LLE? Sign and trade? If he comes cheap why can't the Maloofs/Petrie put down their ego's and open up their wallets? Please, anything...just can't let him go after what he's done for our team.

He missed 30 games last year and even though he was our best player in the playoffs I wouldn't throw a ton of cash his way. Even though he was our best player at the beginning of the year as well we really sucked and weren't playing all that well.

I like Bonzi but I think the Kings did the right thing and there is no way he is coming back here after he turned down our initial offer. He will sign a contract somewhere else just on principle alone. His ego(or anyone's ego for that matter) couldn't stand turning down 36 million only to sign for the LLE......how could he explain that???

Nothing new of course but a little bit on him from the other day..

The Al Harrington sign-and-trade saga is finally set to end. He'll end up with the Pacers, despite telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "there comes a time when you have to move on and find a place where you are wanted" just a few days ago.
Atlanta and Indiana are done haggling. Harrington's new agent, Arn Tellem, has done what he could, and all the paperwork is set to be signed after over a month of uncertainty.

Sometimes things just take time when you're trying to maximize your earning potential. See Drew Gooden, Chris Wilcox and now Big Al.
Players are making decisions they'll have to live with for years to come. They have to look themselves in the mirror and be happy that what they're making is enough. It might be more than enough for you and me, but they're in a different earning market -- and their families have to eat. See Sprewell, Latrell.
Meanwhile, teams have to make sound decisions. General managers have to wake up without a salary cap suffocating them first thing in the morning. Goes both ways.
They also have to fill out a roster. Who's even left? Here's a checklist of the 10 biggest names:
Bonzi Wells: Still dangling. The Kings are out, and the biggest payday he was going to get this time around eluded him. If I'm him, there are two situations I'm looking at. I sign for one-year with a championship contender, say the Spurs or Heat, and try to win a ring. My other option would be to take a chance that Denver's George Karl is going to play me enough to where I'm actually happy with my minutes. Ditto with Indiana's Rick Carlisle if I want to go that route. Taking the one-year deal is the key. Play nice and see who bites next year and make sure this brief ride is as satisfying as possible.
Melvin Ely: Despite a history of injury problems, the 6 10 big-man is entering his prime and is going to find work. He's a restricted free agent, but the Bobcats are willing to negotiate a sign-and-trade if a team wants him bad enough. I'd give him a three-year deal at a reasonable rate and hope I end up with a bargain.
Kareem Rush: His shot selection has frequently come into question, so hopefully that answers your query as to why he's without a team. He did hit a few clutch ones for Phil Jackson and could re-emerge with the Lakers for a second term. Rush went out to New Jersey for a tryout and saw the Nets sign Eddie House instead. If Rush's options continue to dwindle, a move to Europe could be a possibility.
Jumaine Jones: If he doesn't rejoin the Bobcats, he'll be playing with his fifth different team in five years. Charlotte is signing Argentina's Walter Herrmann, which may mean Jones isn't coming back. He's capable of some big nights, so he'll find work. You know what you're getting with him -- a durable 40-percent shooter who can stretch defenses and occasionally provide a significant offensive spark.
Reggie Evans: The undersized rebounder and post defender will likely stay out West now that Harrington is indeed headed to Indiana. Minnesota had been one of the teams most mentioned as interested in his services, but it was waiting to seeing where Lorenzen Wright would end up. Now that the Hawks have the room to sign Wright, Evans should soon find a home. If a deal with the T-Wolves isn't struck, expect a contender to gobble up the solid role player on the cheap. He could even return to Denver at a reduced rate, but that would contribute to the glut of power forwards already on the roster.
Keith Van Horn: He's on his last legs, and according to a report circulating a few weeks back, former college coach Rick Majerus indicated Van Horn might retire. There have also been reports he might finish his career in Utah, where it once took off as an NCAA star. He can still shoot and creates some mismatches with his size.
DerMarr Johnson: He's another one Denver has taken its time deciding on, but no one has been beating down his door. Strange, too. Considering he's not likely to get much more than the minimum, you would think some team would be in the market for a good-sized wing that plays defense.
Shandon Anderson: After winning a ring in Miami, it doesn't look like he'll be brought back. It remains to be seen whether Anderson calls it a career or makes one final stop in what has been a productive, extremely profitable (thanks, Scott Layden) career.
David Wesley: The veteran guard has been linked to Cleveland for the better part of the summer, and will likely come on board. If he has anything left in the tank, you can expect him to stick, given the abundance of youth the Cavs have at the guard position. Considering how little playing time Damon Jones got last year, you wonder if this is even worth the effort. Then again, at what will likely be the veteran's minimum, Wesley could be an affordable insurance policy.
Michael Olowokandi and Kelvin Cato : Yeah, these are two people, but I'm lumping them together because it's last call for both. Phoenix is still in the market for a backup center, and 7-footers are always in demand regardless of whether they offer little more than size. Cato barely played last season and can still block you some shots. Olowokandi? Well, he's pretty much destined to be in the conversation of worst No. 1 pick in history. Not finding a taker this offseason would add to his list of, um, accomplishments.
