Congratulations! My baby girl is 2 and I still think of that song all the time. Baby girls are priceless. If this is your first, you're in for some mind blowing, persona altering stuff.

Where The Streets Have No Name - U2 - 80's

When I was at some movie back in the 80's, and saw the Rattle and Hum trailer - which was the opening of this video - I literally counted the days till I could see the movie. I spent weeks on the edge of my seat. And in two U2 concerts I've been to since then I hoped and prayed they would do this number right - and have never been disappointed.

The keyboard tones starting out against that red background, and then Edge's incredible riff with the echo and delay just right... so very tasty and exciting.

Any time this song comes on I'm in grave jeopardy of getting a speeding tickets.

Next up I'm going to pick one of my favorites from my childhood - Dire Strait's Money For Nothing, released in June 1985. Just a great, fun song off of a very solid album, with a groundbreaking (for the time) video. The image of a glowing headband, wristbands, and jacket playing a glowing guitar is simply iconic (even if it doesn't come along with the single on the iPod!)

I'm going to indulge and put two videos in. The first is the radio-edit version of the original video:

First of all, since VF21 has asked me to keep an eye on this thread, I will be updating the board tomorrow evening, if she doesn't come back around first.

Now, on to my pick: the video for this thing is one of the most psychedelic things I've seen (I could be described as very conservative for a Black man, mind you, so take that with a grain of salt). But, it's for one of my favorite songs...

Nice one. I waited for years before it finally made its way onto the iTunes music store (at least, outside of the album-only version on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack).

WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS - Led Zeppelin (1971)

So I needed to pick up a Zepp song at some point, and I had a lot to choose from. Honestly, the drum line alone is all the justification I need for this pick. A great, powerful song from one of the best albums of all time.

After a poke around the past drafts I noticed something, I don't believe anyone around here is a Deadhead:

That may not be coincidental, The Dead aren't for everybody. I used to think they were a hard rock band (before I actually heard them). Nope. A country / folk / Americana band? Closer, but you can't categorize them like that. Hippies? Yes.

The first time I heard this song I thought it was Country, and then The Doors, then I thought Allman brothers, and when they get to the part about the cops kicking in his door during a bust on Bourbon Street I just didn't know what to think. Then the DJ says the Grateful Dead, and I was utterly confused. I had never heard a Grateful Dead song before and expected something totally different. What was I supposed to think? I became curious, bought their greatest hits afterward and became a closet Deadhead. According to Wikipedia you can get nearly 2000 live performances of theirs streamed online. Plus I like their art.

Edit: if anyone is offended by the picture, I can post a live version. Or a Mod can, cause I'm kinda lazy.

My problem with picking Dead songs is that they're just not the same as experiencing the Dead in concert, which I was lucky enough to do several times back in the day. (Yes, I am that old...easily). The Grateful Dead was an experience more than just a song.

I know there's at least one other deadhead around here; we used to talk about it when Pollard was still on the team.
