How is Sac?

Was wondering if there was a thread talking about Sacramento? I am from the LA area and planning to move up there this summer. I have been a kings fan since the early battles with the lakers...everyone down here loves the fakers and I just couldn't never stand them. Anyways, any suggestions on where to live in sac? Are there racially divided areas like here in LA? Also wondering if there was a large latino population like here in LA...any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is a large latino population in Sac, yes.

Here are some other attributes:
-There is also a lot of agriculture just outside of Sacramento so it has a much different feel than LA.
- There are bedroom communities that range from urban to farm towns to deep forest living depending on if you want to commute in.
-Sac is a MUCH smaller town than LA.
-Sac is in the center of California, so you are close enough to drive to anyplace in California in a day.

You might find this TIME mag article interesting. Note, this is regarding the "city" of Sacramento. A lot of areas contiguous with the city are actually in the county of Sacramento.

People with more money and generally more conservative views have basically fled to outer suburban communities like Folsom or to neighboring counties like Placer and El Dorado. MUCH less diversity there.

(I lived in the LA area until age 15, then moved to NoCal over 40 years ago. Yes, I'm old.;))

I live in downtown Sac. You couldn't pay me to live in the burbs...boooorrrring!

Though, if I had my drothers, iId be in San Diego!! :D

I've lived in apartments, etc., before and hated having neighbors close by. I live about 20 miles south of Sacramento itself in the country. OK, the drive to work and back is a bit more than I care for, but I grew up in the area and my wife works for a local school and she has only a 1-2 mile commute. The nearest house is over 200-ft to the north. The next closest is over 500-ft to the south. Nice and quiet! :D I bet VF laughs at this, but it works for me for a little privacy and peace. :p

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Summers are hot (but it's a dry heat!) and the Delta breezes tend to cool things down a bit most evenings. No snow to deal with; coldest temperatures are about freezing level for a month or two out of the year. Tahoe, SF, and Chico are only 1.5-2 hours away. Yosemite and Monterey/Carmel are maybe 3-3.5 or so.

I lived in OC for 2.5 years and hated it.

No Santa Ana winds to deal with and there generally is not nearly as much smog and traffic as down there. Rush hour traffic is getting worse here, but careful selection of where you live and work can eliminate that.

The surrounding areas are very rural, so yes, it is nothing like living in the LA area. That can be good or bad, depending on what you like. ;)

Anyone that has dial-up in 2008 should not be laughing at others.:D

Back to topic:

Simply put, I have lived a number places in the US and Sactown is clearly the best place that I have lived. Just one man's opinion.

A couple of answers to your specific questions.

Yes, there are racially, ethnically and socio-economically divided areas. There's also a vibrant gay community here.

As to areas to live in, it's hard to answer that. Do you like urban or suburban or even rural; do you like apartments/townhomes or do you want a house with a yard? Do you need an area that's got low-end rents or are you looking for upscale or in-between?

Do you want to live close to the light rail system or bus routes? Do you need to be close to school or a job or do you not mind a commute? Would you like a predominantly Hispanic/Latino; Black; Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Southeast Asian); Russian; White neighborhood or....? Are there certain recreational opportunites you'd like nearby?

Working and going to school...so a small room/apartment in a cheap area would be cool. How's woodland?

Going to school where - UC Davis (if you don't mind me asking)? Geting someplace relatively near the school would be beneficial in that situation.

My sister-in-law works at UC Davis and just bought a house in Woodland, definitely more affordable than Davis. Commute isn't bad at all, but I don't know about the public transportation links in the area.

school is in rancho cordova. I would like to find a neighborhood with some good mexican food/influence to feel like home.

I live in Rancho, in fact my street is predominately Mexican. Decent neighborhood, kids playing in the street. Grocery store where you can walk to it. several houses for sale in the area including a rent to own option.
