how do you deal with it?

i've been a kings (and basketball) fan for five years now, and every year it's been getting more and more intense. so i gotta ask the long-timers here this:

how do you deal with it? the incredibly long slumps of bad play? the boneheaded plays? the losing streaks? the heartbreaks? the angst and frustration that just makes you want to throw a shoe at the tv???

cuz i think imma need some of your soothing ways to get through this season. this preseason, the team chemistry issue (never an issue since i've been watching, obviously with that squad), of course the dreaded "I" word...

Have extra tv's on hand for all the shoe throwing - OR - just keep slippers around during the games!

I don't get mad anymore, it's unhealthy. I should change my name to Mildly Unpset Sometimes D.

edit:
I used to have it bad a few years ago, after a loss I would get a headache or feel feverish (hypertension runs in the family). Like I said, unhealthy. Not sure if I grew out of it or it's because I have lower expectations.

In those cases; try to enjoy, watch/check out other teams/teams that you enjoy, think about it for a little bit (or a few times), don't let it get to you, forget about it/try to.

Those of us who were around for the "before" years have tried repeatedly to tell people to make sure they enjoy every minute of the good years, because they won't last forever.

Keep one thing in mind: No matter how bad it gets out there right now, we have lived through and survived worse.

Basically, my advice would be:

1. Quit trying so hard to spot problems. If there's a real team chemistry issue, you'll know soon enough. Trying to spot one before hand just means a lot of aggravation and nothing you can confirm anyway.

2. If you're a fan of a certain style of play - and not necessarily a Kings fan to the bone - you might actually have to consider looking elsewhere. The Kings this year may end up bearing little or no resemblance to the team you first started following.

3. Give them a chance to crawl before they walk, and walk before they run. Face the fact that the 2005-2006 Kings are, most likely, NOT going to surprise us all and win the O'Brien trophy. Could it happen? Well, yes. Will it happen? I'm sure not going to bank on it. This is a team trying to redefine themselves, and it ain't over yet. If Peja walks at the end of the year, the whole tone, style and focus of the team could well change...

4. Instead of watching for perfection, watch for improvement.

5. Keep a sense of humor. Don't take everything so seriously that you can't find something to laugh or smile about. I could tell you some of the things Kingsgurl and I use, but then everyone would know how really bizarre long-term Kings fans can be. ;)

6. CHEER for the team. Anybody can cheer when they're doing good. You have to be able to reach way down inside and continue to encourage and support them through the though times, too.

I love this team. I did way back and I will as long as there is a Sacramento Kings to root for. That means I've dealt with disappointment, I've dealt with the ride of my life, and now I'm dealing - with the help of my fellow "veteran" Kings fans - with uncertainty and borderline chaos.

Being a Kings fan ain't easy; this is a season that will truly separate the wheat from the chaff.

GO KINGS!!!!!

Just remember, like the big statue out front of Arco proudly proclaims:

We're #6!!!!!

I try not to have "expectations". There are times when I just enjoy the ride, rather than worrying about the destination.

yeah, but if i do that then everyone could accuse me of being a bandwagoner, and i just couldn't face that.

so if it goes south this season, i will be in here b!tchin' with the rest of you and fully expect you guys to drink virtual beers with me as we drown our sorrows. thanks!

IMPOSSIBLE TO SAY IT ANY BETTER THAN THAT!!!

There's always something to look forward to despite how bad the team gets. Right now they are pretty good and seem to have some real potential so there's always that hope to hold on to despite a bad game or a few. So we hope for the playoffs and beyond. I'm a 49er fan and I find hope in that we have young QB with lots of potential and I get to watch him and the other young guys learn and accomplish together. Sure they don't always win like you want them to, but there's that hope that they will improve and thats what keeps me up even when things hit rock bottom.

I hesitate, but it is appropriate.

"It is only a beginning, always. The young must know it; the old must know it. It must always sustain us, because the greatness comes not when things go always good for you, but the greatness comes and you are really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes, because only if you have been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain." ........Richard Nixon in his farewell to the White House Staff.

not nearly as bad as being a Laker fan

Hey...there's worse things than being a Laker fan. You coul be a Hawks fan. ;)
At least we've got 14 titles to look back on fondly...and I've been there for 9 of them. :D

I just keep reminding myself that the Kings, and the NBA, are entertainment.

PHX is a really good team too, even without Amare. My hope is that that they have it all together by the end of the season, make the playoffs, and put up a respectable fight when they get there.

They have the talent, they just have to learn how to play as a team.

Let's see how they look after the first 10 games, when the starters are more used to getting real minutes together. There will be plenty of time for sorrow when its needed, no reason to get a jump on it.

i still become an angry prick. sorry, but it'll be around this season and on this site. i'll just keep it "appropriate" haha.

You have to look at teams like Houston and Denver last year. They started off very slow because everything was so new. That is exactly what this team is going through right now. They have a lot of complex/skilled players and they need to be used the right way.

One thing that is bothering me is that Adelman still doesn't have a solid rotation down. Reef and Brad have hardly played together. Adelman needs to stop messing around and get his rotation right!!!

But, I trust that Rick will do what he feels is right and I will support him fully. I think you have to give this team at least 20-25 games to get everything down to a level of normalcy. I just hope the powers that be give Adelman at least that long.

Eeek! Don't even go there. I'm thinking we will eventually straighten this thing out, but a midseason coach firing could really take an unstable situation and throw it into turmoil.

I think the "powers that be" are more aware of just how much this team has changed than some of the fans apparently. I don't think they're thinking championship this year; I think they're actually looking a year or two down the pike...

I've just lowered my expectations.
I usually dont have any to begin with, especially with the Kings...I learned that a LONG time ago with this team...just take everything in stride(except for when we're playing the Lakers, of course, no matter what kind of team THEY have, the hatred is still there) and get excited when need be. Living through alot of trades back in the day that I thought would make us contenders...hell, I thought we actually had a contender when we had Danny Ainge, Antione Carr and Wayman Tisdale..I used to get made fun of for being such a die hard back in the day. Anyways, enough about that...just take everything in stride.:)

being a fan entails wild fluctuations in mood. actually, when your team is obviously not one of the title contenders, it is easier to take in and digest losses. it hurts the most when you think, like many others, your team is one of the contending teams. remember horry's shot, sixth game "referee heroics", etc. those hurt more than anything else.

anyway, that is why i quit being a fan; too much pressure for something i have utterly no control over and gain nothing from. being sympathizer is better for your health (and for your loved ones ;) ).
