Hot new George Karl rumor (Merged)

The problem as I see it with a coaching search at this point is there's two options who Id' be satisfied with, Karl and McMillan who are available. And I'm really not that high on Karl, he's just far better than what we have. Personality wise I think McMillan would be a better fit with Cuz. I'm also a bigger fan of his style than Karl's and it better suits a Rudy/Boogie duo.

Other coach available is Mark Jackson who I want nothing to do with. JVG won't come. Gentry won't come now. Really, who's left? Doug Collins? Hell no. And while Thibs and Chi appear to be on some real rocky ground, even if Thibs were to get fired, I see no chance he'd immediately turn around and consider another job, especially here. I don't see Thibs getting fired midseason anyway. Neither will Brooks. OKC will do all it can to make the playoffs, then reconsider this summer.

And this is where PDA/Vivek dragging their feet at the speed of a drunk snail is killing us. There's two legit options I see and they've let this **** drag on so long without a plan there's now real competition with another coaching opening. And there will be others. Chi/OKC/NO could very well all fire their coaches this summer and all are attractive situations.

I'd personally be on the phone with Karl and McMillan today and get one of them on board ASAP. This btw is turning into the most incompetent mismanagement I've seen across the American sports landscape since I can remember. If you're this far into your "hiring process" and this far into the post-Malone era and still don't know who exactly your top candidates are, one, two and three with such a limited pool of candidates, you're an idiot, pure and simple. Were these clowns just sitting back the last 4-6 weeks and hoping Corbin would magically turn this **** around? It again strikes me as having no plan B. Can't believe what we're witnessing.

He thought they would continue to play close or better than what they did at the beginning. Huge mistake. There is strong feelings by many that this is a coaches league more than a players. The coach has more influence than people realize. He took away their leader and things fell apart, no real surprise to the people aspect of a team.

Great coaches adjust to their players strengths and not force a system that doesn't fit. Karl wants to win and will do what it takes. That's the big mistake PDA made in the whole thing you don't force players to play that's not their strength.

To be fair, maybe they never wanted Karl, and aren't pursuing him now.

If only there was a coach out there who could get this team to play defense, play into our stars strengths, develop young players like Ben, get the team to buy in, have our guys backs...

I think Gentry is still in play, and goddamn likely if the Kings wait till the end of the season. They can have Karl now. They can have Jackson now. They can't have Gentry now.

I'm not even sure they can hire McMillan. I mean, they could. They could theoretically hire anyone, but when was the last time an assistant coach left one team mid-season to head coach another?

In fact, I think one of the bigger reasons why this is taking so long is because Gentry may be hesitant to leave the Warriors mid-season. That is a negotiation that could be happening behind the scenes as we speak, and if Gentry thinks he's in next year, he might be feeling some pressure to jump into this disaster now before he loses half his roster, and potentially Cousins. The worse the Kings play, the more pressure on Gentry to come over sooner than later. Again, if they have something planned already.

I don't know. I can't explain it, but the quietness of it all has me leaning towards Gentry as their target. Obviously speculation more than anything else.

I'd think it'd be easier to pry McMillan from Ind than Gentry from GS currently and I don't think that's much of a stretch. Two things working against the Gentry scenario is how PDA/Vivek handled approaching him this summer which likely was a turnoff to our management and that his success as GS's top assistant could probably land him a better coaching gig in Chi/NO/OKC this summer as I expect at least one coaching opening there and likely two.
 
Karl being so desperate and out there is kind of a red flag for me, none of the potential canidates are anything special unless we somehow get Thibs/JVG but those guys are exactly the opposite of what this FO seems to want.

I really think they will hire an offensive minded rookie coach who will implement their stratagy/ideas from time to time. Mullin being the frontrunner. They (Vivek) want to win in an innovative way.

All of the canidates being mentioned around here have been around for a while and it doesnt take this long to look back at what they have done in this league. If a move was going to be made on the Jackson/Karl/Mcmillans of the world it would have been done.

Oh and simply hiring a coach isnt going to fix this mess, this roster outside of rudy/cuz is pretty bad. The games recently are a testament to the miricle work Malone was doing.

Because I'm a crazy person, I just took a look at Gentry's twitter account. Two of his last four follows are Vivek and Cousins. Who knows if any of it means anything. Probably not, still fun to speculate.

I think Gentry would get over that little issue pretty quickly, especially with the GSW crew in his ear telling him how great Vivek is.

Yup.

If you wanted Alvin Gentry then you fire Malone last offseason and offer him the job outright. Now? Can't hire a sitting assistant coach DURING the season and Gentry will likely have more intriguing offers from teams that didn't approach him with a shady proposition previously.

I can't believe whoever is pulling the strings (whether D'Alessandro, Mullin and/or Ranadive) is really this completely tone deaf.

What did they think was going to happen when they fired a coach liked by the players when they were finally starting to show some signs of life as a team? When the message is that what Malone was doing was wrong then what are the players supposed to think? "Do some of what you were doing before. But also change it. And focus more on offense while keeping the defense the same. More ball movement. More uptempo." Yeah, if it were that easy then when Adelman took over for JVG in Houston then they'd have another ring in Clutch City by combining Van Gundy's defense and Adelman's offense.

Of course it doesn't work that way. All it did was disrupt the season, dishearten the team, frustrate Cousins, and ruin the budding chemistry. Early on you could see the uncertainty of the players when Corbin took over. Then the losses piled up. Then you could just see the frustration. Now you see a team that looks like they've given up.

And you know the biggest irony? The idiotic move to get rid of Malone 24 games in because they wanted a "better" coach has likely made it much HARDER to find his replacement.
 
Why does everyone keep bringing up Jeff Van Gundy as a potential highly desirable coaching candidate? He definitely had some good runs but he hasn't been a head coach in like 8 years. Reminds me a lot of Paul Westphal. He's had some good runs but he wouldn't be all that high on my list with so many other potential candidates that have been head coaches and/or assistant coaches and had success much more recently including this season. I think JVG is a little bit more of a risk than someone who is currently coaching right now.
 
I would like JVG because he coaches a style of play that would fit with what it currently constructed, despite what the FO thinks. Unfortunately, that (other than the fact that he probably doesn't want to coach) is precisely the reason why he wouldn't be hired here.

Honestly, at this point.... worrying about the coach while our FO is still a clown collage is like worrying about the bench without a good starting five (but that is a problem for another thread)..

We could have Pops in the coaching chair, but as long as Vivek is still sending texts with "coaching advice", while PDA is grumbling in his ear about the crap roster's "hidden potential" we're screwed.

PDA is as garbage as the roster he has globbed together with his number crunching. Not only is he incompetent, but he's a sniveling slimeball that poisons the mind of our wannabe warrior owner. PDA needs to go.

Vivek needs to realize that, despite being a really smart guy, he doesn't know PACE (props to whoever came up with using pace as profanity btw) about basketball. The sooner Vivek backs off with his idiocy, the sooner he can start watching the wins roll in.

Will this happen before Boogie jumps ship (taking a bunch of fed up fans - myself included - with him)? Probably not.

I know it may not be the popular opinion to all, but i think it's not a bad way to go, hiring a coach now, as opposed to waiting until the off season, even though i think Scott Brooks and Tom T may end up being available this offseason. This is, of course, assuming they make a good decision in this hire. Boogie is clearly not happy, and i think the team culture needs to change sooner rather than later before we end up losing him. I personally would like to keep the draft pick this year, but it will be nice to finally have that pick no longer hanging over our heads if/when we end up losing it, and i for one will NEVER agree with tanking. I don't care how effective it may be, i think it's a cowardly move.

I just wish a little more info about who the Kings might be targeting had leaked out, even though the rumor is that we still have Karl under consideration. If i see any Vinny Del Negro rumors, i WILL vomit.
 
Guys it has to be a splashy move! Someone that will get the fan base excited again. This is how our hierarchy thinks. The obviously realised (unless they are brain dead) that their grand plan backfired in a MAJOR MAJOR way! They see that on the floor, they see it in the stands, they hear it on the talkback radio, they see it on social media butmost importantly for then, they are feeling it with season ticket renewals.

They cannot afford to really alienate the fanbase which is obviously what they are doing and they realise that they need to do something that gets the fans back. They should have realised by now that Sacramento Kings fans are not stupid. They are not going to be thrilled if they replace Mike Malone with Gentry, just as we are not thrilled to replace him with Corbin.

This has to be a household name, a home run! It has to get the fan base excited and it has to bring it back. They are losing money this season and they realised that they will lose a LOT LOT more next year because they absolutely pissed off the fan base.

They hopefully realise that they must do something. I am just hoping they they don't make a bigger mistake out of desperation. Desperate people do stupid things!
 
Grant even mentioning dire need for a coach and his belief that Karl has been contacted.

I strongly suspect this is being orchestrated by the front office and, for once, I don't care if that is what they're doing. The end is all that matters, by whatever means necessary.
