Hot new George Karl rumor (Merged)

There are three ways to build a team. Through trades, freeagency, and the draft. All are important, and if I may point out, just about every player in the NBA was drafted. Cousins, our best player, was drafted, and had we traded that pick away for a good journeyman player, we wouldn't have Cousins today. If we truly had a chance to make the playoffs, I'd be all over it. But that chance, regardless of who the coach is, is close to zero. That said, then what is the point of winning just enough games to lose the pick. That is a zero sum game. After next year, the pick becomes a 2nd round pick, so it's not like this goes on into infinity.
picks are pointless if you lose the attention of the guys you already have pursuing them.

I understand the people who want the pick. I think they need to understand the bigger picture and I'm not up to explaining it and perhaps incapable of explaining it. Let's not be terribly critical of those who see WCS within range in the draft. It took me awhile to understand this situation.
I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure others feel the same way. It's not about just wanting the pick, it's about not wanting nothing. I want to make the playoffs, and the pick be dammed if we could make the playoffs. But right now it seems almost impossible, so that said, the only benefit of not making the playoffs, is being able to draft one of the top 14 players. Especially when there are several players that would really help the kings, and two or three that could be franchise changers. The worse case scenario would be to not make the playoffs, and also lose the pick. And that's where I'm coming from.

Dream scenario:

They hire Karl, Malone comes on as lead assistant coach (obviously in charge of the defense).

That would be a wicked coaching tandem.

Crap, now I'm all excited thinking about the possibilities... Gotta bring myself back down to earth...

Worst case scenario:

No D'Antoni is hired as head coach, Mark Jackson comes on as lead assistant (obviously in charge of dividing the locker room based on religion and boning prostitutes).

...Ok, thats better.

While that may be true, its an entirely separate issue. I can't speak for Gay, but with Cuz, hope springs eternal. Bring in the right coach, and make a good choice in the draft along with some key moves, and I think Cuz would be just fine. Just my opinion of course. I think most players just want to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We had that and it was taken away. Now of course for the conspiracy theory people, maybe the Commish whispered in Vivek's ear before the season, to go ahead and win as many games as you want, and not worry about losing your pick, because it's your turn to win the lottery. If that's the case, we have nothing to worry about.

Its really not a separate issue though.

I had a hell of a time convincing people back in the day that it was time to lose and tank. They were too stuck in winning. Now its the opposite problem. The NBA is like a life cycle. There's a time for everything. When your players are old and on the downhill, its time to abruptly quit, take a dive, and tank and tank hard. When that tank has given you your superstar and he's entering his prime, its time to win, and win hard for as long as you can. And picks and kids be damned. When that star runs his course and starts to decline, once again it will be time to tank. We're not there. Not remotely. If Cuz was hurt all year, sure. But he's healthy, mostly, and he absolutely needs to see something from us. Or his agent does. Its impossible to stress just how ****ed you would be if I were his very powerful very ruthless and very connected agent. We simply cannot lose anymore, for any reason at all. If there is a way to turn this and win, you take it and count your lucky stars.

Yep. Our life cycle has to follow that of Boogies. its as simple as that. This coaching decision is major. We can not afford to lose any more time. Boogie's management have their own reservations about Karl and his History with star players suggests that their questions are not build on nothingness.

We must win and win now whilst doing all the things we did at the start of the year; enact a system, culture change, accountability.

If it's a scheme problem, hire Karl. If it's a chemistry/morale problem, hire Jackson.

I'm personally not a big fan of Jackson overall, but our team has clearly showed that their morale is easily affected. None more than Boogie.

But they didn't want to tank. Not at all.

What are you basing that on? Cause corbin is playing the starters larger and larger minutes.

That's not what a tanking team does. We saw what a late season tank looked like last year, and it involved Ray Mccallum playing 45 mpg while dumping Jimmer and milking an IT injury. They stripped the team down to Ben and Ray and somebody (can't even remember) as the only guards. That was a classic late season modified tank.

Playing demarcus, dmc, Ben, and Rudy all more than 36 mins in a game that was a blowout almost from the opening tip is nothing like what a tanking team does.
Again, whether they deliberately intended to tank or not (I still think they did...) the result of their decision to fire Malone and then roll with Corbin until the end of the season pretty neatly accomplished that. Sitting at 17-30 a few games before the All-Star break, this is not the time to panic and initiate a "right the ship" plan to try to finish with a respectable record. It's over. It's done. The ship is sinking and can't be saved. Even if they actually thought Corbin was their guy and it took two horrible months to realize they were wrong, a competent front office would plan for the future now by ensuring we don't lose our pick. This is the situation they created, intentionally or not, so recognize that our pick is only top 10 protected this season and at least let Corbin finish the job.

You just have to hire somebody, anybody, who the team can rally around. Somebody they will listen to.

someone who will be here long term, salvage this season and get us into the playoffs next season ideally.

it is possible with the right candidate but there isnt time to lose and it involves a few swollowing their pride

Also while I understand the argument that "this season is already lost, why hire a coach now", this FO has repeatedly said they are looking to win now. If that's true I can't stress enough how much having the second half of the season to right the ship can mean for next season. If we hire a capable coach and can play .500+ basketball after all star break we will go into next season with a lot of forward momentum and with some of the kinks worked out. If we wait to make the hire were going to have to go through the growing pains of a new coach once again and its hard to do that when we are in "win now mode". If the FO truly wants to win now, they will make the hire before seasons end.

The real question is "Are we better off to change coaches again to get on the right track sooner?" or "Is it better to wait until after the season?"

I say hire Karl now and maybe he brings in Malone as Assnt Coach!!

I'm sorry nothing legit has come out of Dave's hinting. I think posting this thread was a pace-up. I saw the twitter exchange and got excited, thinking something was imminent but it is looking like a false alarm. I feel pacing worse than I did before. We will trudge on with the mute front office and stagger to the end of the season with disheartened players and empty seats.

I hope the guys who have hinted at not renewing go through with it... or failing that, I hope we win the game of chicken and force a response. Frankly I was emboldened by the photo of the empty seats in Sleep Train tonight (I did not watch the game, I know better - I did something else tonite).

I'll renew if three partners commit by the deadline. I have one hard commitment and one soft one. I'm not doing my utmost to recruit the fourth (I am half-heartedly trying) because I'm conflicted myself... but we'll see.

All star break is 8 days this year. The time to replace Corbin would be during this time if it's going to happen.

in my opinion, pete d'alessandro made his bed this season, and now he must sleep in it. if the kings had anything resembling a plan to hire a new head coach after firing mike malone, they would have done so already. but since there was no plan to hire a new head coach, and since the firing of mike malone has clearly made this team much, much worse, this season should be considered PDA's failure. he gets to swallow the losses. he gets to swallow the fan exodus. he gets to swallow the bad press. he gets to swallow the embarrassment. etc...

at this point, i'd honestly rather that the kings' brass, incompetent though they may be, take some time in hiring a new head coach, especially since other mid-season or end-of-season firings could potentially contribute to a more attractive pool of candidates. i'd certainly prefer george karl to tyrone corbin, but i've never been karl's biggest fan. that said, if tom thibodeau or scott brooks suddenly become available, it puts greater pressure on the organization to consider hiring a successful coach with experience, rather than the more frightening prospect of them hiring chris mullin in-house...
