Hobbit Ball Works?

Entity

Hall of Famer
We went with a small lineup for most of the game. So does Hobbit ball actually work with this particular lineup. Its not as if Artest is going to get killed by many of the PF in the league in fact he is as tall as KT and bigger. Plus we outrebounded them. Maybe that lineup will be what it takes for us to resign Bonzi. We could not do it without him.

Only 1 day rest from here on out. Advantage us. Duncan may get 50 but that would mean Spurs would only score about 70.

Well going "hobbit ball" is much better now than it was last year.

Especially when you're SG is really a PF, and so is your SF. Pop has been going small so we've just matched up with it.

For the most part RA was responding to Pop's small line up, pop had to get Naz and Nessy out in order to get scoring going since Manu and Parker were silent... Seemed to work ok but the trade off was takeing Reef out, he was doing well against Duncan and once the Hobet ball started Duncan really heated up and prety well scored at will on Kenny/Miller. I'd have been ahrd pressed to take Brad out and paly Reef tonight, given the way Brad played, but it would be a thought if the Kings have to play Hobbit Ball again. I think the all Shire squad might be more effective with Reef instead of Brad.

When one of your hobbits is Bonzi, you might have a chance. Ben Wallace would also be a nice hobbit to add to that lineup.

I have read probably hundreds of articles with even a passing reference to Ben Wallace. I can honestly say with no reservations whatsoever I have never seen this statement before:

Coming soon - Return of the Fellowship of the Ring. The story of a tall hobbit and his search for another ring...

;)

It does sound strange, but Ben Wallace could be considered a 6'8 hobbit at C if Artest can be considered one at PF.

To be fair, don't think Artest and Bonzi have been characterized as hobbits too often either :)

Well, not really. Pop started the hobbit ball, by playing Duncan at C, then coming out with Finley, Ginobli, Parker, and Bowen/Barry... Rick just retaliated when the Kings were getting run out, and Thomas was unable to take advantage of the fact that he was so much bigger...

I couldn't care less what our lineup is (though i would like Miller to come off the bench and have SAR start) as long as we have more points than the Spurs in the end.

Yeah, but this didn't really FEEL like hobbit ball (Tough Dwarf ball maybe?) because as everyone is saying Bonzi and Ron don't play like hobbits - It FEELS like hobbit ball when KT (or Skinner when he was here) is our center and we are not getting rebounds.

yeah with wells and artest more like tough dwarf.... but man, i think Big Nasty actually has a better shot of stopping Tim Duncan

Rick Aldeman coaching a hell of a game works! I know that there is another thread praising Rick already, but I don't think enough is being said about the way this guy has coached this team the last two games.

He said in his post game that this is what he wanted to do in game 2, but Ron being suspended threw a wrinkle in his plans. When they put Horry in, he wanted to go small and make THEM adjust.

He's a guy coaching like he needs a job....oh wait.

It works if Popovich is only going to play Nazr Mohammed 10 minutes like he did last night. If the Spurs want to go small with Duncan at the center and Horry or Finley at power forward the Kings are going to get the best of that matchup every time. It allows Adelman to bring in a Bibby/Martin/Bonzi/Artest/Miller lineup, which is probably the Kings' best, and meanwhile there's no shotblocking and rebounding for the Spurs. I'm really not sure what Popvich was thinking.

i'm just pretty pleased Adelman finally used the real strength of the Kings line-up. That is pound it inside with Bonzi and Artest. I mean who in the Spurs line-up can guard either Bonzi and Artest? You can actually see the Spurs collapse on defense which caused better scoring opportunities for us. Plus with Kevin,Bibby and Brad Kings have the speed to cover and check the outside plays of Spurs.

I just love how we won! We were able to defend and make the steal and Kevin finishing the shot over Duncan's outstretch arms.

Speaking of Adelman during the postgame press conference. Was I the only who got a kick out of Rick pronouncing the H in Horry ? We all know it's not a silent H. lol.

Hobbit ball has a chance to work and is called for as long as:

1) your OG grabs 14 rebounds.
2) your SF grabs 12 rebounds.
3) all of your supposed "bigs" COMBINE to grab 10 rebounds.

And for once Pop got trapped trying to match us small for small.

Givne our lack of shotblockers up front, don't know how much it matters really on interior help defense -- Ron might be a more intimidating defensive PF/C than any of our bigs. But if Ron and Bonzi combine for closer to their nomral 13rebs (5.3 +7.7) than the 26 they gave us tonight, we just get crushed on the glass. And if Pop plays it straight, one of his centers (or Duncan) is going to have an enormous size advanatge in there.

Was anybody else surprised that Reef didn't play in the fourth?

They were shutting down Reef pretty good - 4 fouls and 2 pts in 12 minutes.

I think we'll see more Reef in Game 4.
