Just finished reading all the Utah newspapers and also read Sloans remarks at the press conference. My guess is that at least for now, he's retiring. That might change by the end of the season when he's tired of sitting home. He's one of my favorite coaches, and is the third winningest coach of all time. And if his Stockton/Malone teams hadn't had the misfortune to exist at the same time period as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Issiah Thomas, and Michael Jordan teams, he would probably have a couple of championships under his belt. In 23 years of coaching I don't think he's had more than a couple of years where his team won less than 50% of their games. No mean feat.
From what I read he's had many run in's with Williams over his time with the Jazz. And they alluded to at least three earlier in the year. Its also reported that Williams gave management an ultimatum earlier in the year, that they had to choose between either Sloan or him. I suspect that in the meeting with management the owner must have sided with Williams and that sparked and outburst from Sloan, who already had had an altercation with Williams after the game.
Its a shame for it to end like this. Sloan is a far greater coach than Williams will ever be as player. But everybody has to come to the end of the road, and likely it was time for Sloan to go. It is a players league, as Stern has said many times. But you always have to be wary of letting the inmates run the asylum.
