Hey Vivek, I miss playoff basketball!

You and I disagree on this, and that's fine. Its what makes the world go around. It doesn't make either of us right or wrong.
Actually, one side IS right.
Demonstrably.

Here, I'll prove it:

Vivek's hanger-on hob-nobbing with the Warriors while he is THE LEADER of the Kings franchise does alienate a significant portion of the Kings fanbase, and makes them question his priorities.

Therefore, Vivek is wrong to go there.

See?
It is completely irrelevant that some people don't see a problem with it.
The only relevant fact is that THE LEADER of the Kings entire franchise... the guy's desk at whom The Buck literally stops there..... is perceived by a significant number of his customers that he shouldn't be at the Warriors game yucking it up with his pals and enjoying the game.

He NEEDS to be aware enough about the Kings fanbase (i.e. the customers he is trying to sell his product to and extract lots of entertainment dollars from) to know it will not be viewed well.

But that's the problem
- Vivek again has proven his tone-deafness to this franchise fanbase.

You and the others condemning Vivek for attending the Warriors Playoff game represent an extremely small minority. Sure it seems like a big deal here on KF.com. But in the real world it matters very little.

Keep banging the drum trying to turn this into something. Then the whole dozen of you can plan a sit in somewhere:)

Me? I'm going to keep watching NBA basketball:D

Next we can over analyze why Vlade is talking to the competition about how to run the Kings:eek: Oh my! He will give away secrets and asking opinion from another team may be verbotten.

By the way Pop called Coach Bud to inform him he was selected COY. Why you ask? I mean they work for different teams. The NBA asked Pop to do this.

Methinks you all are holding Vivek up to some preconceived notion of what you think an owner should do. It appears very narrow minded. The man attended a basketball game for goodness sakes.

Good stuff, but none of it really applies to this situation.

Peoples level of concern, anger or disappointment may vary, but there are actually few people who think it's va good idea to go to another teams playoff game.

Just to nitpick, the Hawks asked Pop to do it. The NBA called the Hawks, the Hawks called Pop.

Am I annoyed that Vivek was at a Warriors game cheering them on? Sure.

But at this point it's kind of like being mad at a serial killer for kicking the family dog after he already murdered mom, dad, and little Billy.

Vivek's list of **** ups is long, and most of his offenses are far more egregious than going to a playoff game for a team he used to own a share of.

If youre a part of a sports team you dont show up to another team's game. After the way Vivek & Co. Trashed what looked like a very promising season i dont want to see or hear vivek ranadive until the team starts winning.

I hope Vivek attends every NBA Playoff game he can. Why you ask? As I watch the games it is evident that most of the Playoff caliber teams have at least one very good defender and some have a hand full. IMO one of the key weakness on the Kings is not having a legitimate NBA level defensive stopper. Guys like Leonard, Green, Davis, Allen, Jordan, Butler, Bogut etc are part of what makes these teams good. Plus you need quality players 8 or 9 deep. I want Vivek to be keenly aware of what is needed to compete in the NBA.

(Insert obligatory ex-girlfriend analogy here)

it's funny, my wife and i were talking about this just the other day; she's a kings fan by marriage, and thus doesn't have the deeply strong connection to the team that most of us at kf.com have. but i told her about vivek's appearance at the warriors' home playoff games, and she was just as put off by that knowledge as many in this thread are. i was curious for her perspective, and this is basically what she told me: "hypothetically, if you saw me hanging out with an ex-boyfriend who now has an amazingly lucrative career and wears expensive suits and drives around in fancy cars and is well-regarded by everyone around him, how would it make you feel, even if you knew it meant nothing?" i answered, "yeah, that'd probably make me feel like sh**."

it doesn't matter that "it didn't mean anything"; the act of my wife seeking attention from an uber-successful ex is bound to damage my self-esteem a little bit. perhaps that's representative of an insecurity on my part in this particular hypothetical, but when you're a kings fan whose team has been under threat of relocation for a decade, whose team has sucked in great measure for much longer than they've ever been worth rooting for in the last three decades, and whose team was very recently sabotaged from within by the very regime who rode in to save it, i'd say you can hardly blame those who might be insecure enough to feel disrespected by vivek's presence at the warriors' home playoff games. rainmaker described vivek as "tone deaf" on this issue, and i agree with him. vivek didn't do anything explicitly damning here, but it was insensitive and displayed little in the way of good judgment. hell, just watch the game at home like the rest of us! don't put yourself in a position to draw the ire of the fanbase yet again!

personally, i'm offended by the fact that he had to be cornered by the media at a f***ing warriors game in order to provide clarity on the demarcus cousins trade rumors. couldn't he have, ya know, shouted down those rumors at the close of the season, from somewhere in the vicinity of his own team? i get it; he's a bay area guy. that's fine. good for him. but if he's going to represent the city of sacramento as owner of this team, i'd rather that it didn't appear as if he was "running home to mama" when things get tough for the kings. perception matters, after all.

irrelevant bc vivek doesn't give a crap about defense. he's going to use math to determine how to play the game. it's going to be revolutionized!!!!

Great post here - I agree with all the points made -
just one clarification.

The spot-on phrase of "tone deaf" has been used by many people (rainmaker was an early adopter :) ) but from a search, I think kennadog was the first to apply it (and define it) to this current front office and their behavior, on Jan 1, 2015:
It's not an entirely a wrong stereotype to say that some people are so numbers, logic and analysis obsessed, that they are tone deaf about people and relationships.

I happen to think maybe Pete and Vivek are among the tone deaf. They can't see the human side beyond the numbers.

I'm glad you found that post and quoted it. I completely agree with what kennadog said.

Is it too much to ask from this organization that they can tell us where the buck stops on the draft? Who has the final say? Or it just going to be another intrigue that we have to find out after the fact? It's just frustrating...

Well, its been reported that Vlade only answers to Vivek, and thus, everyone else answers to Vlade. At least on the basketball operations side. So my guess is that the buck stops with Vlade. Now how much leeway PDA has is up for grabs. By that, I mean can he just up and trade a player, or does he have to clear it through Vlade. When Petrie was here, he had to clear everything through the president of the team. Of course Petrie was also the president of the team, so that was fairly simple. Frankly, I care more about the results than I do who to throw rocks at. If the Kings walk away from the draft with a good choice, I don't care who made the decision, which in most cases is a combination of voices.

Petrie used to do a lot of his own scouting, including europe. I don't know how much PDA gets out and actually watches college ball. I wonder if we have anyone over in europe right now with games going on over there. I'm hopeful that they do more than check draftexpress.

I don't think Viveks intentions are in any way to hurt the Kings or their fans but Vivek, as a general rule of thumb, in his professional and possibly personal life really needs to get his head out of the sand and hire him a real PR person, or department, that can guide him through life as a region figurehead and a pro sports team owner. Someone that can give him some feedback and idea of what those in the outside world may interpret him to be doing or saying at any given moment. His tact is very much that of someone who just seems to not understand some longstanding perceptions about particular areas of the game and life in this profession. They pitch sports as an "us vs. them" affair because that makes money. Loyalty makes money. This, deliberate or not, is just simply put a faux pas that runs the same course of many made by more than a few involved with the Kings lately, in particular Vivek himself. In a game where fan trust and loyalty is paramount, anything that runs against the grain will not, and honestly should not go unnoticed.

Look, I disagree with all of this. You can own a team and be a fan of the game. I've played on teams and been in organized sports my whole life; I've captained teams. In the years my teams didn't make it to the playoffs or the championship game, do you think I boycotted and didn't go to watch, and be around the sport and peers I love and support? Hell no, I went. I congratulated those who won, and I promised others I'd see them there next year. Y'all who say "there is only one right side to this"? Give me a break. It's call sportsmanship and love of the game. Owners don't just represent the team, they represent the league, and they should be able to support their peers when they aren't in face-to-face competition. You are allowed to believe what you want to believe, put please get off the "you are wrong and [we] are right." Your view of sportsmanship might just be different.

Did you play professional sports? That's a whole different ballgame.

Did you? I ask because I know for certain of a couple of posters who DID play professionally and do not share your views.

My question was for the previous poster. Plus if some that did do have an opinion on the subject id like to hear from them directly, but thanks for being their mommy and speaking for them. IMO, experience at the youth and amateur level is quite a different schema than when you play for profit and represent an entire paying fan base.
