here is what I do with the Bibby situation

I posted this in another thread.

Here is what I would do now until the end of the season show case Bibby make him the focal point of the team. Play to the strengths of Bibby regardless of our team record. Build the offense around him that will hopefully spark Bibby and get him going. That would make it easier to trade him in the off season or better yet make him more attractive of a FA so he can opt out.

If he returns to the Bibby we remember, I would keep him. We should work on trying to get rid of KT, SAR, or some of our other "flexible pieces."

You know even if gets to where he was last year it is still not enough to make us a contender. I just hope he can increase his trade value this offseason.

Either that or the Kings could revoke his parking privileges, switch out his locker with Slamson's, and leave messages on his voice mail late at night whispering "Opt out...... opt out......"

Being int eh situation where the only way you can get any cap room is to have your starting PG opt out and leave you for nothing in return is not exactly ideal. You spedn most of your money just replacing the guy who you just lose -- a guy who is already the most accomplished PG in the free agent market.

Actually I think it is the best situation. In a trade there's no way the Kings were going to get all expirings plus maybe one good player -- if there was a deal out there like that the deal would have gone down. Instead it would have entailed taking on some Gooden-esque crap -- and it's better to hope Bibby opts out (or be left with who you say is the most accomplished PG in this year's free agent market) and to spend it on whomever you want than to trade him for some crap that is going to be on your roster for a while.

well really, what is it were really trying to accomplish by trading our PG? I dont think that would really do anything, the kings main problem by far is their rebounding, we need taller guys, Brad miller is the tallest. This may sound like an excuse, but I think that having a first year coach might be a bit of some of our problems, I think next year, when he knows our ball club and the other coaches know our club and have experience with them, that we can really be great. Lets see where things go by the end of the year, if theres no improvement, then by all means try a trade or two, but things take time, this isnt Rick's basketball, this is Muss's.

It is an excuse, and not a very good one. Don't listen to playboy casino owners for your basketball theory. This whole "first year coaches" thing is a complete load of hogwash. In fact as far as I can tell, actually invented for just our situation. First year coaches come in all the time and have immediate success. In fact as often as not it goes the other way with guys having initial success and then slowly losing their teams.

Isn't Chauncey Billups going to be a FA?

Forgot about hiim.

Horribly overrated, but yeah, he would be more accomplished (having a title). He'll also be 31 and looking to sign with a serious team unless somebody drops a max deal on him.

Mo Williams would be our Bibby option if Mike opted out, and with the year he's having he would eat up almost all the caproom himself while being a marginal at best upgrade. That's of course if we could even win the bidding ofr him.

This is the New Jersey or Seattle situation -- the Nets and Sonics aren't sitting around thinking "oh goody, we'll get cap room if Vince or Rahsard opt out"! They're thinking how the hell they are going to replace those guys if they do opt out.

If Mike opts out I think we'll have like 17 million dollars to spend. That's enough to sign Darko and Mo Williams. So we'd get a 23 year old 7 footer who blocks shots and a 25 year old PG that's pretty clutch himself and averages more APG&RPG. I'd be pretty happy with that.

Note that I don't actually advocate this technique, just know that the organization has found the distribution of Hefty bags to be an effective method of letting a player know he's not wanted in the past.

Darko is restricted, you'll have to overpay him or Orlando will match. Milwaukee has Williams' bird rights, money, and no PG under contract next year. Varejeo's name has also bounced around here, but he's a mid-level contract player, and you don't need capspace for that. He will have his pick of those contracts.

The goal should be about getting picks, youth and high value contracts. That last part is the hard part, so you settle on enders because if you're going to lose, you might as well save money. This FA market is only good for role players, and this team doesn't need role players. There is still the question of what role our own players should be playing. High value contracts would help facilitate moves this off-season.

KT isn't a high value contract incase people are wondering.

Mike isn't going to opt out... Why would he? He's due 28 mil over the next 2 seasons...
He likely won't this year. But the idea was to get a longer contract that would total more than $28 mil and maybe more total than he would get when his contract runs out in 2 yrs and he's older.
