Help from a Serb or Croat member?

It looks genuine. The document in question is an "Application to register a player". All over former Yugoslavia, kids play organized basketball as associates of professional clubs starting at age 8. At the age of 15 clubs have option of registering them (usually it's just that - registration, no compensation). Clubs will basically register anyone and everyone who can ball and shows potential. His club Gospic, from Gospic, Croatia has obviously registered him. So, now he is a registered player (registered with Croatian Basketaball Association) and can be traded, signed to a pro contract etc.

Yep. It's actually a lot more simple and inocous then it sounds. Schools simple cannot devote resources to a full program. At least most of them cannot. Under old comunist system, every last city, town and village had at least one Sports Society. Each sport society would have at least Soccer and Basketball clubs, in most cases also Handball, Volleyball, Track and Field, Gymmnastycs, Shooting, Water Polo (in Coastal towns) etc. Every year, each of those basketball clubs (some are giants of Euro ball like Partizan and Crvena Zvezda, some like this kid is playing for a minor leaguers) will put up notices in local schools inviting second/third graders (8 years and up). You get free basketball lessons 2-3 times a week. Club gets "grassroots" and something for their aprentice coaches to do. When you're 15 you register. That's a first cut. Up to that point, "grassroots" are wittled down through attrition (kids giving up or changing sports, etc.). From the age 15 on, you're a "player" according to FIBA and national association rules. Kind of like a rookie league baseball player. In most cases, your pay will consist of free sports gear, meal/travel allowance and maybe stipend. If you're Darko good, you can get signed to pro contract.

In most cases though, pro contract and a second major cut occures at the age of 18, when you cannot be a "junior" any more and you either:
- Sign a pro deal and join senior squad
- Sign a part time deal and play on practice squad
- Get cut.

If you get cut, there are still smaller clubs that will have you, or going abroad to a less competitive league. I don't know if they synched the system by now, but one problem I found was that if you were offered basketball scholarship by a US college, you could not sign up if you were registered player with a Div 1A (top basketball league in old YU), even if you were not under full-time contract and your pay consusted of loaned equipment. But, if you go to (old-YU) college, as a practice squad player, the club will pay you a stipend while you're in school. That was cool. Then there is always England, Sweden or Finland, where they have pro leagues and minor league (by ex- YU standards) players. ;)

Wow-that's very interesting, bwell. It reminded me of China, who has sports schools to train athletes. Kids are taken to these institutions when they are very young and run through a series of tests. If they pass, then they are allowed into these schools, where they live year-round and basically, it's their whole life. They go to educational school (I think) during part of the day, and then spend the rest of the time training in their sport, with international competition and the Olympics being their ultimate goal. They have very limited contact with their families, maybe only once or twice a year. I take it that is the way Yugo was under communism? I think the USSR, Romania, and other former/current communist countries were the same way.

We called it democratic socialism :) (communist party renamed itself so socialist) and political orgranization was kind of allowed through an orgranization other then the Party. Private enterprise was allowed (and taxed to the bone), so we were kind of a mongrel system. Like China today, but with much less success in economy and much more freedom in society.

So this doesn't tell us if he's been signed, right? Only that he can now be signed if some team chooses.

Oh, he is signed. But there is no way to tell whether he is really good and gets paid or if he is just a prospect on a minor league team. Only his team can offer him a contract now and any other team would have to compensate his team if they wanted him. Unless he pulls a Pedja and sues them. :)

Great. Thx for the help. He made a big stink about leaving the board because he got signed, and now he's posting on a daily basis and irritating a lot of people with his constant whining about the Lakers having Sasha Vujacic instead of Roko Leni Ukic. When someone asked him why he's posting, he came up with some likely story about a family illness taking him out of the running. I don't like him so I think I'll put the most negative spin on that document. ;) Thx.

That's just nasty and has nationalistic overtones. Even though Vujacic is Slovenian citizen he is of Serbian extraction. Roko is Croatian. I hate it when sports and nationalism mix.

Besides, how were Laker supposed to draft Roko? Wasn't Vujacic a low-low pick couple years before Roko even declared? It doesn't make any sense.

If you want ammo - Gospic basketball club is like a rookie league affiliate (if there was such a thing) of an independent league baseball team. Minor-minor. ;)

Not to mention that there is corruption anywhere and good connections can get you any piece of paper. Heck... I had an olympic passport once (still have it somewhere) :) Just because I had a family member who worked at the OC and could get me one just for fun.

By Serbian extraction, what do you mean? Is he part Serbian or did he live there? Maybe his passionate hatred for Sasha goes deeper than we could've known. Extremely interesting comment you made there, boz. I'm taking notes, believe me. This is gonna be fun. ;)

LA actually could've taken him, but they chose Von Wafer instead. Funkee has been crying about it ever since. He claims to be a friend of Roko among other things. He also posted an avatar of himself barely being able to dunk, which people lol'd at. He sported a sig saying he's >>>> Sasha. He's a real moron.

Of Serbian extraction as in "I don't know how, but both his first and last name are Serbian". And if this guy asks you how would you know that, tell him that a Serbian dude who knows (even if in passing) real Croatian ballers told you so. That should keep you good for couple of days.

Yesterday, Jackson benched Vujacic and he was really upset. He sat down and tugged his jersey out in a tense manner and he was wimpering. Funkee's going to have a field day with that once he's off of suspension at LG.

For some reason, that phrase struck me as incredibly funny...and yet a little sad at the same time.

That little phrase there was all the pay off that I needed to make this a worthy thread. :)

Keep us up-to-date. I have a feeling that Funkee is going to be a "celebrity" in this lounge. Like a new "Star Wars Kid".

In Funkee's defense, the mod who did it, (Popcorn Machine) is a cretin under the JD mold.
