So my fellow sacramentans, northern californians, and all other curious people out there. what do you think of the word hella? how long have you been saying it? ive been through the days of hecka, hexa, and now hella since i can remember to talk. hella is such a nice way to identify a northern californian and to describe many thing in our everyday lives. yes i have been abused for saying this word by some people down south, but i never faulter to be proud of the youth culture and slang of northern california. i love this word more than any other word ever and im interested in everyone elses thoughts on it.
 
The last time I heard the word "hella" uttered from any Northern Californian, Gary St. Jean was the coach of the Kings.

I think I stopped saying "hella" after the birth of my first child...in fact I think I lost the ability to use most forms of slang and not laugh at myself.

I've been usin it for a couple of yrs. I have hella friends that say it.. some get annoyed by it. ( I also use hella as in a lot... 'John has hella Monarchs autographs.):D
 
I think it's hella dumb.

Despite my dislike of the phrase, I did catch it occasionally slipping into my lexicon during my high school years.

Of course, given today's idiotic slang, it almost makes me nostalgic for those mid 90's phrases.

that makes two of us...i pretty much stopped using any form of slang..i still catch myself every once in awhile saying one of the wonderful phrases from the 80's though....:o

i hadn't quite experienced the "hella" craze until i moved to chico, ca to go to school. everyone up in there uses it too hella much. i absolutely hate the word, it makes me cringe. Being from socal (long beach), this word "hella" stuck out to me so much. sometimes i'd hear it used numerous times in one sentence ie; "I went to this hella tight party and there were hella heads there and we got hella wasted from drinkin hella beers and had a hella good time." now, i'm not one of the socal "dude" guys either, so that bugs me too, but hella is hella worse. i've even heard "hecka" who in their right mind would say "hecka" instead of "hella"? anyways, thats my two cents on hella. I HATE IT.
 
when the word was first popular I never used...it was just hard to use it in a sentence for me but its funny you should mention it cuz lately I've been using it a lot lately and it was just this morning that my sister commented how I've been using that word a lot lately...

I don't mind the word at all
 
I remember in elementry school they used to say 'hecka' because we weren't allowed to cuss.

i find it one of the easiest words to use, just like the "f" word. its interchangeable, hella interchangeable.

Definition: Term used to describe a noun or verb, placing special importance on them. The meaning is seen when used in context. It can place happy or sad overtones on a situation. It resembles the word very.
Attested: I first heard this term being used August of 1997. I was walking into the football locker room and the upperclassmen were speaking of the new locker room.
Example: "I think the pie is hella good." "Cornell has hella smart people."
Etymology: The term originated at Cornell in the early 90's. The exact date is not really known. Students were known to use the phrase "go to Hell!", but after taking several religion classes they found it to be sacreligious. So they changed the phrase into an adjective that could explain every situation, this word was Hella. It can be used in any context and be placed anywhere in a sentence. The term is most often used when referring to everyday conversation. A day can be hella cool, but also hella cold, thereby making two similar sentences totally different. It is universal and a piece of Cornell history.
